it's pretty much a non-story, anyhow...
chances are, if you're a member at prince.org, you'll find nothing enlightening.
just another fan with a job at a media outlet that convinced their employer to let them write up some non-relevant shit.
the comments section will include the likes of 'he's still making records?!' and 'he's so pretty!' and 'purple rain is my jam!' |

it's a long article, I have to read it later when I have more time. But I have always felt Prince is right where it comes to the Internet. It has a lot of potential for the artist, but as of today, the benefit is squarely with consumers and not the artists. |

It´s a double-edged sword. On the one hand I want to see clips from his shows, full songs or even full shows but on the other hand I actually enjoy being in a phone-free zone when I´m at Paisley Park or at one of his regular concerts.
I think the Piano & a Microphone tour in particular would lose a lot of its magic if hundreds of people started using their phones for whatever reason (calling their friends, taking pictures, etc. etc)
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?" |

Hey, I have to say that was a good article. Enough length and variety of perspective included to do the topic justice for the interested public. You could do an adcademic thesis on this topic of economics! As for the ultimate result for Prince, I'd like to see him reestablish a direct distribution setup for merchansise sales, where the earning potential of the recordings and miscellanea can be fully realized, and his admirerers can get the available stuff that they want. |

On topic this is a very good article as far as covering all of the highs and lows of Prince's internet stance.
I can understand the need to protect one's intellectual property but it makes no sense not to provide the content yourself if you really wanted to impact pirating. It is downright silly to be spiteful toward your own patrons.
Regarding the cellphone ban at Paisley Park I can sympathize with the people who have some type of disability such as the guy from out of town who was a cancer patient. It is against federal law to deny any disabled person access to any support they might need and Prince could find himself with a huge liability if his public space does not make allowances for such people.
Somebody who could potentially be in distress should not have their phone taken away, period. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |

Of course the article doesn't mention that MULTIPLE recordings of those concerts started circulating mere hours or days later, so all that effort didn't do shit. So a fail on all fronts: annoyed regular folks, didn't bother bootleggers, and paints Prince as a paranoid luddite. © Bart Van Hemelen

But at least you can enjoy his concert without 20 idiots all around you all holding up their phone while he's on. Worth it imho |

I've never once been bothered by someone holdoing up a phone at a concert. It's also nice to be able to take a picture or two to have the memories. RIP |

I appreciate Prince's attempt to make his shows cellphone free. He charges a premium for his shows. For that price, I don't want to have my view obstructed by a hand holding up a phone or (worse) iPad to capture 3 minutes of footage.
.
Suddenly the crowd is distracted to avoid bumping the special snowlflake who must record "their" memory - because bumping would be rude? That's a real experience, BTW. I've been to shows where people, in front of me, brought full size iPad to record "their" memories.

Good for you. I have. Like FunknRoll said above.
I don't mind people taking the odd snap but so many shows are just crowds of screens in the air. It bugs me. I'm not gonna stop them from doing it but i'm glad prince doesn't like it either [Edited 3/10/16 5:08am] |

Not to mention actually wasting money paying a web sheriff or some such for a service that's nearly impossible to provide because as you say, the boots are still coming.
Even on the tube, for every video that gets taken down dozens more spring up the next day.
Maybe he sleeps better if he believes his actions actually make any difference....

It does make a difference. And I think it is the right thing to do if you are the owner of intellectual property to protect it and not abandon it.
It makes the difference to the general consumer and in th elong run. Sure fanatics like us are going to find a way, in our dogged dedication, but as long as it's not out there flagrantly for the general consumer to get easily get, that's all he can hope for right now, and I think that's enough. Remember, there are a lot of short-sighted people who bemoan the lack of easy availability of his work free of charge as a bad thing. As a detrimental to his legacy or among a newer generation. Which is bullshit. Every generation will have heir own heros and history is no suddenly erased. Any generaion hat cares about music, will seek out the greats. He is not going anywhere. |

I do not disagree with his reasonable efforts to protect his works but lashing out randomly at shadows is counter productive. For example, harassing decent fansites that declined being assimilated by the purple borg to the point where they shut down out of fear and being left only with prince.org.
That in and of itself should be punishment enough and should have taught him a lesson about the detrimental effects of over-reacting.
The lesson is that there is a middle ground between the extremes of protecting your intellectual property and abandoning it.

When he pops up on Twitter it is usually meaningless bullshit. He will show some guy who bought the last album, like anybody cares. He will post kudos for the piano rip off shows. I will break in and chide him on putting out a dvd or the vault. Much love P All you others say Hell Yea!! |
