I appreciate Prince's attempt to make his shows cellphone free. He charges a premium for his shows. For that price, I don't want to have my view obstructed by a hand holding up a phone or (worse) iPad to capture 3 minutes of footage.

Note that Prince has retweeted such illegal audience pictures, and his great friend Nik West even posted footage of one gig on YT.

It makes the difference to the general consumer and in th elong run. Sure fanatics like us are going to find a way, in our dogged dedication, but as long as it's not out there flagrantly for the general consumer to get easily get, that's all he can hope for right now, and I think that's enough.
Remember, there are a lot of short-sighted people who bemoan the lack of easy availability of his work free of charge as a bad thing. As a detrimental to his legacy or among a newer generation. It's almost illiterate how he behaves on Twitter, not to mention his "unique snowflake" attitude to retweeting which in his hands ends up stealing other people's content and re-appropriating it -- which reminds me of that fan who got told off for being too busy promoting 3EG and being accused of things he didn't do.

-- Exactly and it has always been against the rules of concert venues to allow recording devices. The rules against bootlegging a concert did not change because of the prevalence of cellphones.

There have been plenty of cases where artists allowed (and encouraged!) audience recordings. Hell, there's plenty of cases where it is only thanks to bootleggers that we have recordings of bands and gigs that would otherwise have been forever lost. There are whole cults around some "famous" bootleggers who were well-known for taping tons of gigs in their area and thereby capturing some unique moments. There are influential bands where all we have is a single bootleg live recording, even though they were the catalyst for musicians who later became world famous.

The AV Club has noticed the article as well.
