Does anyone know why the U.S. didn't get the 9:00 version of Pop Life?

That is one of my favorite 12" of Prince, and I remember back-in-the-day a friend of mine showing me this version at one of our jam sessions (we both used to play multiple instruments - mainly guitar and drums - and we were both very into Prince).

I had the 6:16 U.S. Remix, but could never find the 9:00 version here in the States. To me, the Extended Version is leagues better than the U.S. version.

Does anyone know the story behind this?

(P.S. Why does the post not show editing? i.e. paragraph breaks, etc. I have to put periods between paragraphs to space them)

It's just an unedited version, as opposed to a remix, right? I agree it's miles better. The US/UK/Europe single releases from Around the World in a Day were at different times and in a different order so i'm not surprised that something slipped through the gaps.

Like, why didn't the U.S. get the "God (love theme)" on the "Purple Rain" 12"?

You got me by the short 'n' curlies.

I like all three versions of "Pop Life", though.

-it has a nice edit

-the remix by Sheila E (if the credits are correct) is extremely "poppy" lol

-the extended version is great insight to the song's ideas, but to me, either Sheila missed her cue, or the ending gets gradually slower. Anyone else hear that?

Prost!

I was able to find the import 12" fairly easily at the time at a record store in the mall of all places. I like it so much more than Sheila E's remix.

Around the World in a Day had the best extended versions and b-sides of any Prince album.

Each territory is a cost centre.

Each territory can do what it wants, when it wants and has to license / commission it's own remixes.

This may not have been licensed for a worldwide release or the USA didn't have budget to issue it there.

A few ideas that are probable.

cool

Actually, now that I think about it, we didn't get the 12" version of Paisley Park either. sad

Time to scour e-bay! I need better versions than the ones I have for all three of those songs.

.

God, I wish he would release the extended version of 17 Days, and The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker.

.

I did my own 'extended version' of 17 days that runs a little over 6 minutes, but it would be nice to have the real thing.

(I posted my version here once, but got in trouble) sad

If there was a box set of 12" replica cds and stuff like "Sexy Dancer (Long Version)", all the non-U.S. releases and proposed releases, i.e., "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (Extended Version)" or "Lovesexy (Remix)", i think fans would really jump on that.

It doesn't have to be coupled with a remastered album.

Just the extended/remixed singles would be cool, imho.

Prost!

this is true, ATWIAD spoiled me
I just we had 100% official knowledge of ATWIAD outtakes
I just realized technically he only had 1 extended version from Purple Rain:Erotic City

Yep.

Tis a combination of this and also an extended product line.

Slight variations in product, increase sales - a marketing ploy that feeds into a buyers belief of exclusivity.

Same product - different variations - more sales.
