Did Prince use the title "Dance Electric" from Pointer Sisters because they'd used the title "Automatic" from him?

I'm really trippin' hard on Pointer Sisters' 1983 album Break Out, it's an absolute electrofunk classic and one of few albums that could rival with P's records in the genre at the time.

I couldn't help notice that the album features 2 songs with similar titles to P's songs: Automatic and Dance Electric.

Knowing Prince I wouldn't be surprised if he'd borrowed the second because they'd borrowed the first from him lol

Has anyone involved in Break Out ever talked about this?

Haha, just a coincidence I think - That time when synths were becoming more and more prominent in pop music, a lot of artists were writing songs using electric/computer metaphors.

Maybe Prince thought "after all since they named it after my song let's also make my own, better version of it". I can so totally see him do that lol

I have the album but never got around to listen to it yet. Curious to hear it biggrin

It's interesting to see how much Prince was being covered so early in his career, prior to PR.

The thing about Prince's Automatic and The Pointer Sister's song is that the PS track was a HIT and is still a dance-club and radio classic, while Prince's song is.... not so much

The thing about Prince's Automatic is that it's simply overshadowed by two monumentally influential other tracks on the same album.

Also, the thing about you is that you'll say anything to put down Prince.

Correct, don't even think he or she is a fan. I have never gone on a fansite of a artist i don't like. I would love to know what drives the person or persons to even have the time to do that. Is something wrong with them , or is it a game. cool

The pompous immaturity on this board has reached a critical mass. “Is something wrong with them?”

No.

They have every right to express their views, positive or negative, about an artist whose music they enjoy in a respectful manner. What blows my mind is how some orgers appear to be taking certain views personally and are actually taking sides.

I'm taking side on Automatic on 1999. Nobody can fuck with that song. NOBODY! Essential, nasty stuff right here. It's my weekend song before going out clubbing if you catch my drift wink

I asked a mature question , don't get on your high horse. Why would anybody be here if they don't like the artist, that's immature. And who is taking things personally am not , i asked a perfectly good question.

Well, without wanting to create a feud or aiming anyone in particular (including the orger above, so I'd appreciate this being regarded as a general comment and not a persdonal attack against anyone in particular), I'd like to quote the late, great Umberto Eco on the topic of "every right to express their views":

“Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community. Then they were quickly silenced, but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It’s the invasion of the idiots.”

^^You said it better than i ever could. To blacknote i was not saying people can't express their views be it postive or negative. It's about people being negative for the sake of being negative. If thats pompous on my behalf sorry. Peace.

Guitar, you assumed that a certain orger was not a fan and questioned his/her mental or emotional capabilities. What you said reeks of obnoxious ninth grade reasoning. If you having a problem with someone’s point of view, address them directly instead of making it out like something’s “wrong with them” for not sharing your views.

No. They know who they are, and most people here including the mods do as well.

I am pretty surprised at how u r trying to ponytrap me here given that you've just appeared out of nowhere. Confirmed orgers have tried this on a regular basis lately and I ain't gonna fall for it again. Thanks for your contributions to the thread, goodbye.

Ponytrap you? You waltzed right into it with that quote and since the mods know who the “idiots” are, I’m sure they won’t snip your exposing them by name. Thanks for your contribution to divisive nonsense. See you on the next thread, Data.

There are actually TWO "standard editions", both having enjoyed the deluxe treatment in 2011, the original 83 release and the 84 rerelease: https://en.wikipedia.org/...ck_listing
