Looks like whatever animosity was going on is over. Why is it over because P has the money and all these protégées come keep running back.

True but Morris has said some very nasty things about prince in the last few years. Especially after he wouldn't let the 07V3N use The Time name. Then purposely adding "Cool" to his setlist.

about what? the use of the Time for the album? That is all I heard

Anything else is always Prince saying "they are the only band I'm afraid of" and Morris giving a wise crack like he did in 1982

Yeah, fair point on the religious stuff but I think even his partyjams from earlier albums- Let's Work, Partyup and DMSR being the biggest, weren't just partyjams. He was exploring something else, Partyup is an anti-war song, DMSR is an entire philosophy, Let's Work is... well, just a little bit more twisted and intense than The Walk. I suppose my point is that The Time tracks tended to be a more straight forward than his own stuff.

Yes. but PartyUp being written by Morris Day, shows how the Time could have expanded their message to deeper thoughts, yet still have fun and be the downtown fellas trying to make it Uptown

Like Vanity 6 had an outtake called Moral Majority, which could have been a perfect branching out from their voice dealing with issues like the moral majority group at the time, or issues that revolve around women and their sexual freedom and indepenance, breaking patriarchal norms.

Did Morris write partyup from the ground up, lyrics and all, or did he come up with the groove it's based on?

Anyway what the Time could have done is really neither here nor there since they were fairly under the thumb of Prince, whether they liked it or not. Which is kind of the problem.

Even under the thumb of the purple one, I don't see why Morris writing a songs for the album would have stopped Prince from allowing it. He probably never asked.

.

Good question, that would make the difference. I'll look into about PartyUp

So do you think Prince wasn't controlling about the Time first time around? I was under the impression that it was this attitude that lead to the break up in the first place?

It wasn't in response to that situation. He meant in general...That's not a very nice thing to say about someone that started your career. No one would even know who Morris is if it wasn't for prince..

I told Jerome the same thing..

My post had nothing to do with that. I'm just saying with their history I don't see why Morris could not have 'hey Prince can we include a song that goes in the same direction...'

I mean Dez Dickerson and Lisa wrote songs he used. Sheila E and band created 2 Sexy & Merci4theSpeedofaMadClownInSummer etc

Didn't the Time or Morris/Jesse/__ create a song or 2 on Ice Cream Castles??

Of course Prince was/is controlling... I think a part of it was also a sick sense of human in a man given some level of power

Well Prince wasn't too kind to Morris, someone who was a friend from youth and whose family took you in when you were homeless lol that still is a general response ie being a jerk, being a prick, a hole etc

Come now, prince being controlling and prince letting people write songs for their own album have everything to do with each other.

Anyway, it would have been interesting if the Time had expanded in other directions not specifically lead by Prince alright but, well, they didn't. I like Jesse's solo stuff, would have liked to see a blend of some of it with Prince's input.

He wouldn't even be playing that character prince taught him. He needs prince now more than ever. Before he goes into a mental breakdown. prince has helped him many times since their demise. But all that is besides the point now. Their reunited now & back together. Hopefully prince can bring Jerome back to patch up their differences.

Yeah I know about Andre'

I remember Prince saying he bounced around a lot living in different peoples homes. I thought part of the time Morris Day's mother managed their band he was living with them. He lived/spent nights with Susan Moonsie's family too

In high school, Day was in a band with Prince and André Cymone and the trio formed an early band managed by Day's mother called "Grand Central," later renamed "Champagne."

relationships, relationship

They were friends. He didn't have to be treated like that.

I'm thinking some of those things Prince said about Morris in that 'pulled' interview might have Prince rethinking how he handles some of these people.

Andre Cymone did interview on the Princepodcast Prince stayed with Andre's family and they both had a falling out with Morris's mom over her management of the band.

Considering Prince's control issues and ego, do you think he should have been the frontman/lead singer for The Time? As he's admitted they were the only band he's ever feared and by doing this he could have reinforced the fact that he wrote many of their songs and showed off his multi-faceted skills with both The Time and The Revolution, expressing himself differently with each band. I believe he did this a few years ago with 3rd Eye Girl and The NPG so why not then? He could have relegated Morris to the drums as he was/is a pretty good on the skins but could Prince have pulled off Morris' 'pimp' act with Jerome to such comic effect? Would he have had to change his clothes as well, since the purple trenchcoat of the 1999 wouldn't really have matched The Time's style?

Wait, that wasn't Prince?!!! eek eek eek
