Prince's Epic Songs

Hey everyone...I was thinking...What makes an epic song? Clearly it's a unique kind of song but what is it, exactly?

I would certainly consider Purple Rain to be an epic, but what are some of his other ones? Would you consider Sometimes it Snows in April an "epic"?

Prince epics:

Moonbeam levels
The beautiful ones
Purple rain
Condition of the heart
Temptation
Sometimes it snows in April
Rebirth of the flesh
Sign o’ the times
If I was Ur girlfriend
Large room with no lights
Joy in repetition
Still would stand all time
Diamonds and pearls
God created women
3 chains o’ gold
Cherry Cherry
The most beautiful girl in the world
Gold
Jam of the year
The everlasting now
Last December
One nite alone
Xenophobia
Empty room

Nb: Just my opinion

Camille, I'm not disagreeing, but what criteria are you using that makes these songs "epics"?

Epics are loud. Epics are long. Epics usually tell a story. Epics have lots of musical changes.

Prince has got tons of 'em.

I don't know why I like it so much, I just do. The whole
thing is just wonderful. The opening with those haunting
strings and that, well what the hell is thát? is that a
digeredoo or something?.

The tempo, the shifts, the vocals, the lyrics, that short
breakdown with the murmured prayer "In Ur Name we Pray!!"

The whole whirlwind of instruments and orchestration
coming together in the last part of the song, creating
an incredibly filmic atmosphere. The scream, the siren.

There's just something about that 86-87 altered voice in
all of those particular songs [most notably the Camille
ones]. It's to do with that funk beat and those nasty
vocals. I love all of those songs, they sound like Prince
trying to Out-Prince himself.
