SOTT is the epitome of lyrical imagery in my book.

Each line makes you picture something vivid. Skinny guy big disease needle girlfriend 17 year old boys "fun" machine guns etc. it won't stop bombarding you with images.

It would have made for a great "experimental" video with quick gritty editing, just with stock footage.

"Papa" - quite a dark song with plenty of imagery.

Great thread by the way.

3 Chains O' Gold.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

Get Blue:
"I wanna take off your inhibitions and do something taboo".
Maybe not the best imagery, but I just listened to it and liked that line.

Dance On is another good one. Maybe not as great as Sign O'the Times, but the two songs have a lot in common. And the line "He's got a 57 mag with the price tag still on the side" from Positivity also has a whole world of images in it. One of the things that made Prince so great back then was that he made statements about the world and society and such, almost like Dylan in the 1960s. I think this is one of the reasons he was so popular with the critics back then. I miss that in his recent work. The ideals are still there, but a song like Baltimore just doesn't have it.

In my book, the official SOTT video is uttermost experimental, and perfect, just bloody perfect the way it is. This stuff was way ahead of its... "time".

Stock footage is OK for "Man In The Mirror", but I prefer the "Moonwalker" live version.
Stock footage on SOTT would have been too obvious, like, here are the images of what I'm talking about, bleah, who wants that? We're not imbeciles (don't mean to offend you).

For me, stock, or rather, news footage works for radical social or political comments : that's why it suits rap singles well.

Well, I ordered, "Yeah, let me get a fruit cocktail, I ain't hungry"
Dorothy laughed
She said, "It sound like a real man to me
You kinda cute, you wanna take a bath?"

I said, "Cool, But I'm leavin' my pants on", "What you say?"
"'Cuz I'm kinda goin' with someone"
She said, "Sound like a real man to me
Mind if I turn on the radio?"

Fairly obvious choices from me, but When Doves Cry and Raspberry Beret stick in my mind as being particularly replete with rather beautiful poetic imagery. There's a lot to choose from in those songs but a line like "the thunder drowns out what the lightning sees" sticks out in my mind as a particularly wonderful turn of phrase. I think Prince's lyricism is sometimes rather underappreciated within the context of his songwriting, but in these instances he was able to write huge hits which had wonderful imagery, and I think being able to do that is a great showcase of his immense talent in this regard.

I must say however, and I don't want to put too fine a point on this, but I do think his lyricism has probably been the aspect of his songwriting that has most receded with time, I love the music in Hitnrun Phase 2 but so many of the lyrics seems really clunky and devoid of the poetic qualities that I loved about his earlier work. That said, some new stuff like Black Muse does contain a touch of the old beauty even if he'll never necessarily replicate it. Sorry, didn't want to turn this into another tiresome "Prince is terrible now" rant but I guess it's a product more of my remarking how good he used to be more than necessarily hating on his recent output.

I totally agree with this. Prince's lyrics were phenomenal. I genuinely think better than anyone. As time has elapsed he seems to have focused more on "musicianship".
