SOTT is the epitome of lyrical imagery in my book.
Each line makes you picture something vivid. Skinny guy big disease needle girlfriend 17 year old boys "fun" machine guns etc. it won't stop bombarding you with images.
It would have made for a great "experimental" video with quick gritty editing, just with stock footage.

"Papa" - quite a dark song with plenty of imagery.

Get Blue: "I wanna take off your inhibitions and do something taboo". Maybe not the best imagery, but I just listened to it and liked that line.

Maybe not as great as Sign O'the Times, but the two songs have a lot in common. And the line "He's got a 57 mag with the price tag still on the side" from Positivity also has a whole world of images in it. One of the things that made Prince so great back then was that he made statements about the world and society and such, almost like Dylan in the 1960s. I think this is one of the reasons he was so popular with the critics back then. I miss that in his recent work. The ideals are still there, but a song like Baltimore just doesn't have it.

RaspBerryGirlFriend said: Fairly obvious choices from me, but When Doves Cry and Raspberry Beret stick in my mind as being particularly replete with rather beautiful poetic imagery. There's a lot to choose from in those songs but a line like "the thunder drowns out what the lightning sees" sticks out in my mind as a particularly wonderful turn of phrase. I think Prince's lyricism is sometimes rather underappreciated within the context of his songwriting, but in these instances he was able to write huge hits which had wonderful imagery, and I think being able to do that is a great showcase of his immense talent in this regard. I totally agree with this. Prince's lyrics were phenomenal. I genuinely think better than anyone. As time has elapsed he seems to have focused more on "musicianship".
