I've never read anything condescending or disrespectful from the 1980s crew. And Susan Roger has constantly said things that build upon the legacy of Prince. I don't know what is or why that he seems to have such a Hate/Love for people from that time...
Prince seems to have a problem with almost everyone from his past It's like he wants to erase these people from his life completely. He has a very unhealthy attitude concerning the past.
I have to believe there is someone else who is influencing Prince's decisions at times, When I read this from Lisa after the 2005-2009 period where she a Wendy had a more closer musical time with him... and definately not the words of someone who is bitter with Prince
COLEMAN He has hinted to Wendy and myself recently that he can't condone who we are or be friendly in a certain way. We both have kids now with other partners—he's been a little less than Uncle Prince. So that hurts, especially because he liked that element in his band back then. We were trying to mix it up and bust the categories: Androgyny and multiracialism were the way to go. I always feel he should open up and be honest because he's a fucking cool guy. |

Okay. I still just have this nagging suspicion that in the midst of one of his royal temper tantrums one day, he's either torched it, trashed it or signed it away. In other words, the vault no LONGER exists.
.
He really might just not properly take care of the old tapes that decay over time.
Which means the vault is slowly getting useless. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry. |

That Lisa Coleman quote really IS tragic.

Morris might have some claim to the masters--I certainly don't know. But it seems highly unlikely any other member of the Time would. And I still don't see anything really new as far as Prince "opening his big mouth" and giving Morris some dangerous support in a rights fight. He's mentioned before that songs were done with him and Morris "on drums." As to the idea that Prince is claiming to be "a member of the band"--nope. He's denying there was one. There was no "Time"--there's just Prince doing some songs with Morris. But I now cede the floor to anyone else who thinks there were other worthwhile topics in this interview, because I'm done with this one.
This^^^^^^
The Time essentially existed as a live act...But on record though? the Time was a concept group from the mind of Prince. Most of the people that I've sopken to over the years in the Prince camp have said this. I think where some some fans get tripped up on is the instrumental contributions that have become known over the years...Like Lisa contributing background vocals and some keyboards on tracks like "The Stick"....
Also Jesse indeed helped out with the writing of "Jungle Love"...But beyond that it's Prince writing, producing and playing The majority of the instruments with Morris playing drums here and there and on lead vocals...
Morris though played a very important role in the spirit of the Time...And I think that's what Prince was getting at in that Ebony interview...Basically: THE TIME ON RECORD IS MYSELF AND MORRIS....
I don't think it gets any deeper than that....
I don't want to derail this thread over masters, because the Ebony interview shines a new light on a number of topics and to be honest a lot people get hoplessley lost and confused over copyright, trademark, and the masters reclaimation process, and just figure since Prince is the primary songwriter and musician the masters are his but there is a lot more to the equation than that. The fact that he wrote and produced the masters are possibly the weakest factors, in evaluating whether he gets the masters or not, given that other people are on the album cover.
I think Prince definitely re-affirmed that he is not the sole creator of the band or all of it's music, which we already knew, but it was refreshing to hear him admit it and imo, foolish on his part given that the masters could conceivably be returned to the guys on the album cover this year, not him.
At minimum Morris and Co. and really all of the protoge acts, could at least have a pathway to claiming the masters, so now is not the time (puN!) for him to give quotes to the press even hinting that The Time was never his and his alone. It just shows how reckless Prince can be about business issues. |
