Deleted - off topic - langebleu moderator The song is more about the event of his death and the events that took place afterwards, same with Gray, not their criminal history. It's also just a song, take it for what it is, like or hate it's your choice but no reason to shit on others appreciation of a song you don't like [Edited 12/16/15 5:21am] Deleted - off topic - langebleu moderator ”The people that will end up defining ‘Hate Speech Laws’ are the very people you don’t want to define the Hate Speech Laws” — Jordan B Peterson

There are multiple eye witness accounts that state otherwise & conflict with others, but in the end, the kid is dead with more bullets in him than it takes to kill 10 people, that is also a fact. Doesn't do any good to keep arguing the same argument with the same result. We can agree to disagree on how we view the world, thanks for your input though.

Possibly the weakest track on the album, but still solid musically. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I can listen to it musically, but his political meanderings are just brutal. (Insert something clever here)

Yes. Thats the way I listen to it as well. Its easy to scapegoat and blame others, it takes strength to "pray" or harbor positive wishes for even people you don't have much in common with or may not on the surface agree with. Change it one more time..

Wow, y'all are off the chain in this thread.
I can dig the song. As a Baltimore native, I think it is cool for Prince to show some love to our city and the song is heartfelt. It's not Raspberry Beret, but that's not the fucking point.
Y'all should take your personal views on race and shove them up y'alls own asses because this thread is about a Prince song and if you like it. Not if you like or dislike other races.

This track sounds like a gay version of Ice Cube's Today Was A Good Day. It just... sparkles! "No justice, no peace, no justice, no peace". Whatever Prince...

But still I wonder..... Does anybody hear us pray for Michael Brown or Freddy Grey. Regardless of the type of individuals they were, they too need our prayers and I will always pray hard and strong for my brothers and sisters. Prince is 100% spot on with the Baltimore track as a song and an album opener. Thank you Prince! We as brothers are aware and know that BLACK LIVES MATTER. I hope Prince records a Black Lives Matter album.

If you want to discuss the death of Michael Brown, take it to P&R. |

I find Baltimore moving, and love that Prince can be that directly political in his lyrics.
What seemed like a well-intentioned toss-off at the time has just built more power since.

the only thing worse than a racist is a racist moron. gonna take a wild guess that you weren't at the concert IN baltimore, nor in the parking lot outside. and for all of the aspersions you cast on the dead, the above could be considered inciting so be careful and on your best behavior lest you be the police's next victim.

as for the song, not a big fan. but it was moving to witness it with the victims' families onstage.

I love the song and the lyrics. The mood of it is perfect to laid back and hopeful and the guitar work at the end is stunning. This is my favorite song on this album and Phase One. I like Prince's political songs I wish he'd do more. The line "let's take all the guns away" to me is referencing the tension between Baltimore and the police department. Essentially Prince is saying lay down your arms and talk. Prince has lived in America his whole life he knows what a violent, gun crazy country it is. We've had a senator shot in the face, countless school shootings, not churches are being shot up and no gun control legislation on the horizon. He is no idiot guns and racism are the pillars this great nation was built upon.
The "if there is no justice then there is no peace" is such a universal sentiment of inequality for all I am flabbergasted that anyone would have a gripe against it. Who is anti-peace? You need therapy if you are. We should pray for those who view this song as racist, anti-police or pro-criminal.

I guess we should expect this racial blindness from someone who quotes Ronald Reagan, the very man who started the war on drugs which was a thinly veiled racially biased initiative to lock people of color up while he himself went behind Congress' back and oversaw a program that had the CIA selling cocaine to fund terrorists groups in Central America. Prince is a Black man in America this song I believe was written for Black America if you don't get it you probably have never really been around the stuff we have to deal with.

For me this is a new song as I hadn't bothered to listen back when it first appeared. I really enjoy listening to the song and am not too bothered about the political lyrics. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I don't get all the hate for this song. I like it. Some of the guitar phrasings sound similar to Sarah by Thin Lizzy but who really knows if Prince was inspired by it or not.
I like the lyrics, too. | |
