"Chocolate Box" should've been a hit song

And would've been if released in the 90s. I used to think the somewhat goofy lyrics sunk it but now I think it is the perfect balance of classic and modern Prince. MPLSound is great

Yeah...no.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Respectfully disagree!

That's a song better given to Britney Spears so she can strut around to it in a music video.

Mplsound is definitely not great to my ears, either. Perhaps his worst Album. He sounds like he's without good ideas, doesn't sound particularly confident, no killer track. The motivation of this release was "Lotusflower" & getting his latest Protégé out there.

Hey, I didn't release that shitty song. It's Prince's fault!

Personally, I dig it. I like TNBALM, too. They both have a deceptively simple, yet insinuating quality. They sound to me like the works of a very promising young artist, which is not a dig at Prince. After all, the album is called MPLSound, which we all associate with Prince's early days.

As far as being a hit, forget it. Songs don't become hits based on quality. It's based on how much money one is willing to throw at it.

i think MPLSound is possibly his worst record. TNBALM is the worst song he's ever recorded. and that's including Purple and Gold

Well ok that's your opinion but I don't get the disdain for that record. It sounds like Prince. TNBALM is quite lame but it sure beats the hell out of HitNRun Fart 1

i never listen to this album, although i do like several tracks from it a lot:
(dance 4 me / here / old skool company).

chocolate box is extra bad because i was looking forward to q-tip being
on a prince song and it turned out to be such a shitty song.

It was too forced. I didnt like the stop and go beats. The lyrics were...ehh...Thank goodness for the Lotus Flow3r album with it..one of his best albums. Disco Jellyfish was fine though.

This seems to be one of those cases where he wrote something that was meant to be catchy but like TGRES, way too much sugar was added. Too hard on the musical pancrea.

Awful song. Worse video. Wasted appearance by Q-Tip.

I think "Stop This Train" could have made some noise with Prince's vocals and a rap verse by Andre 3K.

I've always liked "Chocolate Box." Prince takes his fun seriously on this track. Very catchy. I like it for the beats; the synths, especially on the refrain; the melody; the lyrics; the rap is clever too, and nicely delivered by Q-Tip. It makes me no difference that other fans here don't like it---at the end of the day, when I put on my headphones and play this song, it has me moving and singing along with it. That's all that counts as far as I'm concerned. It works just fine for me.

.

Personally, I think this song could have and should have been a hit, but I agree with what Jasminejoey posted on this as being one the primary reasons it was not: "Songs don't become hits based on quality. It's based on how much money one is willing to throw at it."

.

While I understand why MPLSound is not everyone's cup of tea, I enjoy it quite a bit. It's got the obligatory dance tracks, a couple of beautiful ballads--including the often overlooked "Here" which I love more every time I listen to it, with its delicate guitar and cascading melodies. The experimental "No More Candy 4 U" goes over well for me and harkens back to the wild sound of "Jack U Off". "Ol 'Skool Company" is the only track that was difficult for me to connect with, though the last time I listened to it, I found it had grown on me considerably.

I really like MPLSound, never understood the hate for it, I love almost every track. Except for Chocolate Box, awful track which I skip every time. Didn't like it when it was just an instrumental either.

RIP sad

Worst two track opener for a Prince album imo. Just maybe could've lived with them if it were the instrumental versions, but instead it's just completely horrible! I do however enjoy every track after these two. Thank God the first album of the set was LF, not that it really makes much difference I guess, but it is was it is.

Chocolate Box would have been better with D'Angelo on vocals, singing over totally different music.

D'Angelo is sooooo overrated. Nothing about him is even remotely original. Copy Mavin Gaye? Check. Copy Al Green? Check. Copy Prince? Check. Now just remove the ability to write good, melodic. memorable songs and you got D.
