I like a lot of it but the album gets buried in self indulgence. Tracks like "Orgasm", "Papa" and "Solo" are hardly even songs and really drag it down.

Solo is not just a "song" but art. I've put Come on many a times just to listen to Solo. Art moves people in different ways and I find it glorious!

No, what are you talkin about, the album version is the great one, so jazzy such a classic. The album is good, i love Papa, for me that's the best song on the album, and Dark of course, specially those lines when he said in the backgrounds: "for leaving me alone, alone, alone" sound great, so lonely and desperate. I wish Prince had done more "dark" songs as Papa, with those kind of dark lyrics and with the sound of this album.

Well, personally I can't stand the album version. I prefer the funky, electric version myself, with lines like "maybe u should wrap your legs around my neck 4 a while...see if I can make u smile". Classic Prince for the era. The album version is a boring, typical tune in my mind, that goes on for about six minutes longer than it should. Just my opinion

But, he did . It's well know in the literature covering this period that Prince wanted to release both albums at the same time, with TGE being considered the "superior" of the two albums--that prince "Welcome 2 the Dawn" material shining over the Prince "May U live 2 C the Dawn," material. Even in his acceptance speeches at the time, he was known to diss the Prince material while touting the symbol material. "Prince, the best? The Gold Experience...better," he stated at an awards show once. He wrote COME deliberately to be comopared unflatteringly to TGE.

He definitely promoted Come as inferior, old music compared to TGE, but given the early configurations of Come have Endorphinemachine and Dolphin on them it's hard to see how that could be true. Or how Come could be written by Prince and TGE by prince. Most likely tracks from both albums were written around the same time and he separated them for release.

Given he performed Come tracks on The Beautiful Experience and on the Gold tour, he must have rated them at the time of release despite what he was saying publicly.

Sad thing is his narrative worked and Come was written off in the 90s and has yet to be reappraised, wonder if he regrets that now?

not for me...some very good tracks but some average ones as well...the gold experience kicks its ass as far as i am concerned...

.

interesting to note that come went straight to number one on the uk album chart....selling around 80,000 copies in the first week...but it quickly fell off the chart and only lasted 8 weeks in the top 75 and was seen as a contract filler by most fans and didnt great great reviews...after this album..prince's popularity started to go down and he never had another number one album in the uk.

[Edited 12/8/15 11:31am]

What's interesting is that it didn't start that way. As you pointed out, he originally had some of the TGE tracks on Come, and the "Beautiful Experience" video special showed all of the songs being written by prince , so he didn't originally try to promote "Come" as an inferior release. I think it was when WB balked at the idea of releasing both albums at the same time (or, releasing a double-disc album), that he took to the strategy of marketing Come as a "contractual obligation album" made of inferior material. He left just enough gems on it to make it worthwhile, but he removed key tracks (saving them for TGE), and did the whole "Poem" edit to make it into seques (which I think he KNEW broke up the flow of that disc).

I definitely think he was trying to make it appear that WB was only interested in releasing albums of weaker material (implying that they didn't know what makes a great album), while HE wanted to release the musically "superior" Gold Experience. What I think he failed to take into account was the fact that most fans were pretty well "in the know" at that point, and we were the ones buying his music at that point. The general public didn't know ANY of this, and were too focus on the weirdness of him changing his name to a symbol.

I am a fan of come. But I personally think it is his weakest album of the 90s along with chaos and disorder and also old friends for sale I believe emancipation is his best 90's effort

It is a sprawling album that covers so much ground on the musical kaleidoscope it can't be overlooked as one of his best ever

As such it would make a nice EP.

"Space", "Pheremone", "Come", "Dark" and "Let it Go" are great. I'm not sure what Prince was trying to accomplish around this time. Shit, I'm not sure what he's trying to accomplish NOW. I just know that it was around this time I started skipping tracks and was grateful he didn't do the "one track" Lovesexy CD approach.

Yep. By far. There are some of his 90's elements that tinge it with a gross film, but it's kept at bay mostly. The title track, Pheromone, Space, Solo, and letitgo are classics, the rest could be swept away under the TGE rug. Actually It would have been great if someone did just that, placed Shy and Eye Hate U into Come, then you have one really solid album in Come, and a gross album in TGE that you could forget ever existed. [Edited 12/3/15 10:55am]

Yuck. Yuck. And yuck.

I don't know, I just don't hear it myself. They're bland compositions to me, just bland. Boring grooves, and the nineties production has aged horribly. But sound aside, there's absolutely nothing happening.

In "Pheromone", Prince thinks he's Michael Jackson, but he's not. The stupid pwa-pwah sampled horn make me want to hit the "next" button on the spot. At least it's some kind of riff.

In "Space", there's absolutely nothing, as in the real world. This is the ultimate void, Prince mumbling on top of nothing. It's faked elegance, it's very american and not in a good way.

"Solo"? After howling pointlessly like that, no wonder your girl leaves you. Once again, Prince thinks that he's suddenly Philip Glass, but this is not composition, it's a pathetic show off with some FX just so we don't fall asleep. "God (vocal)" takes "Solo" by the nuts and throws it in the trash.

The real album of the nineties lies in the underground first configurations of Come, and is a mix of TGE, Come, and Chaos and Disorder.

You ditch AOA but call "Solo" ART???
Yeah, whatever man.

I think you lack some knowledge in classical music, or jazz. "Solo" is pure posing. Prince was waaaay over his head. "Big as a balloon", well, a self-fulfilling prophecy in that particular case.

I don't understand the COME haters... why can't they appreciate it??

COME is a completely amazing album woot!

If only the single from '94 Lovesign had been on it instead of Solo.. then the album would have been a masterpiece imho.

But without Orgasm of course... terrible closer..

But the rest is sure breathtaking.... I love all of those songs deeply,

The Beautiful Experience tv special was dear to me as well (and still is loved here)..... wow these were the days of wild... I was soooooo excited back then..

COME this album is fantastic..... love worship

Interesting...you call the album "completely amazing" and "breathtaking" and still you admit Orgasm shouldn't be on it, which means you think the album is less than perfect. And given the dark gloomy atmosphere of this album, Love Sign doesn't belong there either. Everyone will have their own personal taste, but there's no denying that TAFKAP only made Come to get one album closer to getting out of his contract. No matter how much you like it, it's a throwaway album. Just like Chaos & Disorder and The Vault.

It does not fit the overall sound and mood of the album, but in the other hand, There is Lonely, it does fit with the album "dark" sound or vibe.

Some would say that Hanna & Barbera are responsible for masterpieces :

http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Tom_and_Jerry_filmography

You don't appreciate the fun of Daft Punk's Discovery, you're blinded by stock sounds.
But the overdubs on AOA, they're up there.
It's good pop work.
You think I defend AOA compared to SOTT? Not even close.
But you certainly underestimate the musicality of it, the lyrics, and the ageing theme that goes throughout. It's a serious album, and you ditch it because you have a problem with the sound of it, but the album is meaningful.

As with cartoons, you have to listen to it as if you were 14. And I'm dead serious.

No one has ever said 80's Hanna Barbera were good. No one. They were schlock hack jobs with no redeeming qualities.

Sure, there was a time in the 60's where HB was churning good stuff. Just as Prince had his time in the 80's when Prince was too. But 80's HB and AOA are like the crap twins.

Come is the first album from Prince that I purchased just this year! Before I purchased, I saw the album art with his arm extended, the title and thought he was saying something like "join me" or whatever. It's more like "cum".

I absolutely love Pheramone, Come, Papa, Space, and the rest of the tracks are great too! The sucking noises on Come made me drop my jaw from shock. I'm from the newer generation, mind you, so sexual things shouldn't shock me as much as the title track did. I had no idea of how nasty Prince was but now that I've heard more of his music, I'm not too shocked anymore. lol Great album, in my opinion.

I know most fans strongly dislike Strays of the World but I think it should have been left on the Come album as the last track like it was meant to be. That would´ve been a perfect closing song, especially with that "Come..." invitation at the end of the song.

I like that little gem a lot and of all his boombastic sounding songs, Strays of the World is the one I like the most.

The album just sounds very incomplete when you know that Strays of the World was supposed to be the last song on it.

The one-word song titles were fun first, but turning a whole sentence like "Let it go" into Letitgo was a bit silly.

Cool album though, especially in hindsight.

I agree, Strays of the world would have fitted perfectly as a closing song since I always felt like there's something missing on the album. It's a very good album and definitely one of his best in 90's smile [Edited 12/4/15 8:20am]

Good to see someone agree with me about Strays of the World missing on that album. Yes, it definitely should´ve been left on the album as its closing song, like it was meant to be.

By the way, I would love to hear the unreleased rock version of Space that Michael Bland once mentioned here on the org years ago.
