SOTT: A paean to Little Richard ?

There's always a lof of chatter about Hendrix, Sly, and others who get a lot of nods in Prince's music, but Little Richard barely gets any props when Prince — and so many others copp'ed his glam style and sound.

If the gender bender lyrics of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" don't make the stylistic point clear, the "Shut Up! [Already, Damn!]" of Housequake should, or the whole groove of "Play In the Sunshine" should; or even the reference to his "cousin ... doing horse" — heroin being one of Little Richard's devastating drugs of choice. ... No need to even discuss hair and makup.

SOTT is a paean to Prince, and musically/lyrically it's more Sly/JB/Joni than anything else.

I hear all the way Sly Stone as the first and most important influence, then James Brown and Funkadelic/ George Clinton. But Sly all the way, Prince sounds like modern version of Sly. The vocal approach, very wild, funky, bizarre, weid and ultimately great.

Nice list, but it's in the wrong order. James Brown comes # 1. Sly Stone second, Jimi Hendrix 3rd and then Little Richard. (All of them influenced Michael Jackson as well, so there's no point in putting him on top of the list.) Prince isn't an obvious rock & roll artist, but Little Richard paved the way for all of the above (Jimi even played in his band) including The Rolling Stones, another influence. And you forgot Graham Central Station and Santana.

Prince most definitely gleaned some of his style (both dress and music delivery) and mannerisms from Little Richard. That is pretty obvious. It is odd that Little Richard doesn't come up much when Prince is compared (concerning his influences) to others. Little Richard was one of the originators, but he isn't talked about as one of the legends. Even James Brown learned a thing or two from Little Richard.

Thin Lizzy was mentioned a while back, and I did see some similarities in the comparison.

Really? In what way? I'm a big fan of Lizzy and Philo but I don't really see the two as having a lot in common, but maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Prince's sprinking of whooops! hollas and screams — when you least expect it, is all Little Richard... When the spirit hits you, just scream — works every time!

Little Richard was incredible...so ahead of his time in so many ways. Everyone stole from him. Daring, showman, genius.
