Prince, as everyone knows, is all kinds of awesome. He proved this once again this weekend when he appeared at the American Music Awards and promptly outshone host Jennifer Lopez’s all-singing, all-dancing opening routine, Harry Styles’ Ikea-ish flowery suit and Ariana Grande’s grandmother, the singer’s guest to the ceremony. Part of this shining ability comes from his clothes: a flute-sleeved mustard-hued poloneck with what looked liked eyeballs on both sleeves, matching flares puddling over heels and thigh-length gold alligator-style gilet. He resembled an afro-d pop star remade from the sun. Or an as-yet-unveiled relative of Princess Leia in the new Star Wars. Either way, equally mindblowing.
Then there’s the sunglasses. The sunglasses! Prince is so meta with these third-eye sunglasses, what with his band called 3rdeyegirl, that you think an actual eye on his forehead is not out of the realms of possibility. Add the kind of look that makes Blue Steel positively beta, and there you have it. Prince = awesome once again.

To answer your question, respect for an individual is earned over time, it is not something that has to be re earned every week!. In this regard Prince has done more than most to warrant such deference. The media no longer analyse prince ongoing. He is simply now "Prince"..it's iconification.

I like how he brought his guitar on stage with him, it was quite cute. Someone mentioned on facebook that it's maybe a hint to the piano tour being cancelled? Just food for thought I guess.
I modeled in a charity fashion show last week and wore my guitar as a prop. It was fun! I had a big sign on the back of my guitar, and held it up when I got to the end of the runway. I had the organization's logo on the back, and the crowd loved it.

Most of the people criticizing his physical appearance at the AMA's last night is one burger away from a heart attack and has seen the best days of their hair go away since "Diamonds And Pearls" came out.
I didn't see the awards show but I think he looks great in the above picture and, even though I am mostly uninterested in his "new stuff" and these girls in his band etc. , I still do not consider Prince a washed up hack. The Weeknd has made some great and catchy soul songs that have been big hits.
D'Angelo made an incomprehensible, mumbling, poorly mixed album that only had any hype because of the stupidly long time it took to make it, and everybody promptly forget about it after 3 months. I didn't see anyone mention it after January of this year, on this forum. And now D'Angelo is back hiding in his hole, while The Weeknd continues to pump out great songs.
Hell, I don't even like The Weeknd that much. But listen to that bass drop at 44seconds. That's fucking killer. D'Angelo took 14 years and couldn't write one thing with as much impact. I'm listening to it on my studio monitors and it slams.
