Just finished listening to it. Once again, you nailed your review/discussion about the album. A fantastic listen and I agree with all of the comments! I wish Prince would let you raid the vault and decide what to put on another album because I'm sure you would do a great job! I love that you are big fans but not to the degree that everything he does is amazing. (Are you listening Nightchild!) The everything we do is funky and great attitude that Prince and his new band etc have is a little worrying. He needs to get out of paisley park and get some different perspectives and life experiences! Anyway, well done guys, here's to the next review.

It's not as bad as I thought, but still I disagree with a lot. They want Prince to slow down on the third track like he usually does, lol. Actually the sequencing is one of the stronger parts of the album compared to Prince's previous releases.

General problem is, people don't get the album on first listen because it's too different from what they are used to. Even "musician" Toejam needed to revise his opinion on some songs. So this Prince fan survey is just a first impression survey. Nothing more, nothing less.

Btw: What an awful intro! Toejam really sucks at creating electronic music big time. lol

Lol! I hear you although to be fair, in my defence, I have only ever reviewed one album by Prince and have a world of stuff still to go. I think one of the many things that Peach & Black do well is that they don't simply state they like or dislike something, they back up their opinions with as much detail as they can. Sometimes an album just 'clicks' with you and, of course, every Prince album, indeed every song is someone's favourite. If I can encourage a few people to delve around Prince's back catalogue and find thier own treasures it would be great.

I must admit that I tend to find something of interest or something worth discussing in almost all of Prince's work whether it grabs me or not. Obviously overall I am positive about his work as if I didn't like most of it I probablywouldn't follow him to the extent I do. Ultimately people will make their own mind about a song and decide for themselves but I think it's still worth discussing them all.

Peach and Black for me have always been the Gold Standard of podcasting and getting a chance to talk to Captain has been one of the biggest highlights of the past few months for me!

Thanks again guys for a very entertaining listen and thorough review as always! It is much as I expected, particulalry in terms of which songs were considered strongest and weakest, but you were slightly more positive about the weaker songs than expected, and there are many of those...

You made somn good point about perspective, ie that if the album was considered more as an extension of AOA with remixes and guest artists it would be received differently and more positively than if promoted as a Prince album. I totally agree with that, as a Prince album it is very disappointing in terms of quality, as a bit of an extra thing I could take and leave songs without feeling too disappointed.

The other good point is about Prince trying something new. He did and that is a good thing. The result was not just all that this time around. Having said that I have made a playlist with Hardrocklover, 1000 x&os, June, Stare, Free yourself, Groovy potential with the best tracks on AOA and PE and I will dig that until phase two comes around. I might have that play list for a looong time....

Great show. Good points about sequencing and also how this would be received differently if presented as a remix album or NPG presents. Those first 4 songs in a row are just horribly grating one after another after another.

Thank you for taking on the question of whether this is the worst Prince album. I can't think of anything worse. MPLSound, The Rainbow Children (too much misogyny and religious intolerance), Plectrum Electrum, and Planet Earth are the only ones that come close to as bad for me. But those all have some really good musical moments that HNR lacks.

Good listen as usual. Like the way Captain slated a few tracks, picking a lot of faults then would end up saying he likes it!

Usually I disagree with most things Captain says about albums but I agree with 90% of what he said in this review. The 10% is in regards to the song June. You surprised me this time. Love you guys.

Excellent podcast chaps as per usual and I'm with 'aaroncanderson' in agreeing mostly with Captain apart from "June" (A?! How can you not be taken away in its' dreamy whooziness and open-ended lyrics? - Man!!).

.

This was always going to be a divisive album - if you're not a fan of Josh electronica, you ain't gonna like dis. Me? I like the album but then I am a fan of electronica. I don't get a lot of the whining on the Org regards how new the synth sounds/patches/pads etc. are. I'm fine with it, if it sounds fine and fits then that's all that matters. A wah-wah pedal still sounds good as it did in the 60s to me. Some people are just too fussy or snooty.

.

A great and interesting point I also agree with you guys and 'Stranger' about is in terms of perspective. If you look at this album as a companion piece to AOA (which I'm sure is the intention - I mean look at the cover art, there's the glaring clue) it makes a lot more sense - it's just that it's been released nearly a year after AOA that doesn't help. But, yes, as a companion piece it makes a lot more sense - certainly, if it was released a few months after AOA. By treating it as such, you can forgive the remixes (obviously) and songs that are not fully formed. (I don't have a problem with segues and songs that are just 2-minute grooves like the excellent "X's face". Why do all songs have to be fully formed with verse, choruses, bridges and middle 8s? I love musical doodles and ditties peppered here and there - some people get a massive stick up their arse about that and I can't understand why. Fair enough, if you don't like them, but variety is the spice of life isn't it?)

.

Another big point that MC made and seems not to be discussed as much as I thought was Prince handing over production duties to Josh. For me, as a Prince fan, that's massive. Haven't we all used the line "Yeah, but Prince plays all the instruments, composes, produces , arranges all his own music" in heated musical deabates as a trump card when we were younger? I'm sure that it's Prince's ego that stops him from being produced by others and likes the fact that he is seen to do all his own music in his Willy Wonka land. So now, is he finally relaxed enough for others to produce him? I hope so. By ǧworking with others, I'm sure will be very good for him and his music. Taking in their influences and/or being competitive in the studio will always yield interesting results methinks. I'm sure we all have a list of producers we'd like to see him work with.

.

Anyway, I've enjoyed this album, and it sounds different which I think, as you guys do, is to be applauded and an interesting addition to his canon - more so than the ordinary fayre of "Musicology", "Planet Earth", "20Ten" etc. Where he goes from here is going to be very interesting.... I hope(!)

.

Couple of things...

.

It's wierd, am I the only person who's not a fan of Hardrock Lover? It doesn't really do much for me and don't like the guitar and it's tone. Very skippable.

.

MC - can't you grace the Org with your presence and just put your playlist on this thread? I haven't and don't want to subscribe to Tidal just to see it - but am interested in how your order goes. Oh, go on...

Kudos to the P&B crew. Managing to get 3 hours of discussion out of this release is impressive. I think the guys have put more work in than Prince did creating the album. Seriously thank you.

While I understand the efforts to not get too negative and find good things, I was a bit disappointed in the track by track reviews. However. in the whole album review, I think the guys nailed it. (ie..crappy album but at least he tried something different).

Just a few random thoughts:

  • I think the roundtable would greately benefit from an American voice. Sometimes obvious cultural references are missed but thats not really a big deal but I think having someone from the US (preferably African-American) would really take it up another level. e.g. how does not someone reference Nikki Manaj when "Curly Fries" come up or Janelle Monae with respect to Million $ Show?
  • How have any of you NOT have heard the original 1000 Xs and Os??? SOOOOO MUCH BETTER and really exposes how little effort was put into this remake.

Unfortunately, talking about outtakes and bootlegs on the show would most likely not result in a positive reaction from Paisley Park..

Until the day Prince sends us a message that it's cool, I dont think we'll be seeing a 'bootlegs' show anytime soon..
