My only real concerns re. Prince's modern music career is the slightly worrying tendency of including remixes of older tracks on what's supposed to be a 'new' album', like This Could B Us and Mr Nelson.

Also, bringing out known (very) old stuff like 1000 Hugs & Kisses and If I can Get Your Attention etc (granted the former was never officially released), it all smacks slightly of lack of decent new material, or a slowdown in his modern song-writing, but him not willing to slow down his release habits. Such things should be released as B-sides or one-off internet releases, not on actual 'new' albums. This just isn't like him, as he normally loves to show off his current creativity with nothing but 'new' stuff on his new albums.

Which is obviously ironic, as he's supposedly always been this hugely prolific songwriter with this massive vault of unreleased music. In fact, if I were feeling pessimistic, I might suspect he's been drawing more and more on the vault for inspiration over the last 10 years or so, as he's struggling to find much new to say in his songs.

Of course, I may well be (and very much hope to be) wrong, but it's just a sense I have. And what he has done in his career is enough to take most of a lifetime to fully appreciate.

I'm surprised the more 'negative' posters on here haven't made more of the above facts actually. I can see the thread titles now - 'Prince has dried out of new songs', 'Why So Many Old Songs as New Releases? smile

Define "failing" or "going nowhere". I dont see how that applies to Prince who has been the business since 1978-9, or even before that before getting signed. [Edited 11/8/15 7:57am]

I'm not saying Prince is failing or going nowhere. The OP never said Prince doesn't have any money or is loosing money. Just in general being a Millionaire has nothing to do with being successful or failing at this point.

.

But Prince did say himself in connection to the new album that 'If something isn't working, you have try other things' not a direct quote.

Not to me cuz at the end of the day if one no longer cares for an artists or the current prince bothers them that much they could move on and stop following him. But they don't and honestly if i were Prince that would feed my ego even more. And I'm not addressing the few who offer balanced criticism.

My main knock on Prince has been this strange relationship he's had with hip-hop. If he likes Kendrick Lamar why not collaborate? It doesn't make sense. A move like this can be done without feeling desperate.

He could have had Jay-Z Throw a verse on an 1000 xs and os remix (same music. Sit down, josh). What hip hop station wouldn't play that ad nauseum?

There's also the Vanguard option.

He has choices. Any musical desperation is a self-inflicted wound that won't do him much harm anyway. With that said, he seems like he would scan a site like this just to cross ideas off of his list.

Personally, I'd love to hear an all vocal project crafted with the help from none other than Bobby McFerrin. It could be a short LP (runtime- 31 min 21 sec). It's intro could be an extended cut of For You. Light guitar work could also be sprinkled in if necessary. Tentative title of project: The Voice of Truth.

-- Nobody wants to have Jay-z rapping in 1000's Hugs and Kisses which made into the RnB top 20 with no promotion or guess performances. Not made for someone who is failing.

Nobody wants to hear 'Mr Nelson' either, but it was made.

Jay-Z has more power on the charts than Prince, despite him being 20 years deep in his career. I'm personally not a Jay fan, but I recognize that he could expedite a return to commercial relevance for Prince.

How about he does a song with Beyonce? Why the b-list Rita Ora?

get a life you guys. I remember a mick jagger interview (and he loves prince) where he said, "Prince couldn't keep up with himself." (google it). Case closed. I do believe he still has 5-6 more good albums under his belt, but nothing like the dirtymind-batman run (some would say lovesexy). that's because he started segregating categories to appear radio-friendly. prince is not rock or pop, and prince fans are not rock or pop fans. prince used to be an amalgamation. sadly, that's not true either of his fans or his music. also, like aristotle said, if you don't doubt yourself you're not an intelligent man. prince was best when he doubted himself. now, he's cruising. no doubts. he's good. confused

A "career nosedive" and "running badly" don't quite seem appropriate when you're paid up front; time after time. after time. after time...

Prince has been a successful musician/entertainer for about 40 years now. How many people have worked at something successfully for 40 years, makes millions per year, is a household name, works when he wants, but is questioned as desperate or lacking in preparation (a plan)?

We can criticize Prince all day, all night lol on the Org and trust me we do, but to be fair the man is 57 years old and has spent most of his life touching people with his music and that is truly a beautiful thing. Some of us periodically leave Prince and listen and take in other artist and enjoy life, but we always come back to the genius that is and has been Prince. Artist do things all the time or make bad products and totally alienate their fans. Some fans leave and never come back, but Prince is not those artist. The man has always been special to his fans and whether you still like him or think he is a washed up has been you still come here and look for his latest work or just hang out and discuss your favorite artist. Be honest with yourself...you still enjoy his work. I know thedance would never intentionally make a thread for ya'll to hurt Prince's feelings eek He is human and does have feelings and family members who probably come here and read these threads. So be careful what you say. I can say that I am one of those orgers who try to make honest statements about things on here. Sometimes I hate his work, sometimes I love it....if you love every song that Prince has made or will make something is definitely wrong lol Anyway, I think 30 plus years from this man is enough and anything from here on out is an added bonus be thankful that he is still with us doing his thing.

Ok this is just so ridiculous.

Let me explain somethig to you. When you hit your 50's and you're a man who has solidified his legend and icon status before he hit 28....and you have your recording studio/playground where you can invite Madonna, jam with Miles Davis and have pajama parties all weekend....

oh yeah, PRINCES CAREER IS RUNNING BADLY.

When you hit your 50's you (if you're lucky) have eclipsed your career. YOU"VE DONE IT ALL.

MORE OF THE SAME NO LONGER MATTERS ANYMORE.

When you have accomplished everything and your only competition is yourself, you are just no longer interested in competing with yourself anymore : ITS BORING.

Prince is LOVING LIFE - the man is rich, free, single and doing exactly what he wants to every single minute of every single day.

There is NOTHING desperate about that. He is in the game when he wants to be, he cares when he wants to. He's had the world, and he's not interested in repeating himself smile If he cared about selling more, he would do what he needs to do -

Prince is very clear, and you can see exactly what he cares about by how/where he spends his time. Thats not desperation sweetie, thats REAL POWER, REAL SUCCESS.

Sales dont matter but fans want a prince album they can love

Kendick was rapping over "whats my name" if i am not mistaken ... It was awful

Thank you jay z for NOT rapping on 1000hugz .. That would have ruined the best thing prince has released lately

Fact is ... It had to hurt with aoa flopping AFTER A FOUR YEAR BREAK!!!

Not knowing Prince personally, or how he feels about how is career has gone in recent times, I can't speculate on what I think he will do next.

BUT, if I were Prince, I would go to Warner Bros and give them a written guarantee that if they put the money up to promote the Free Urself album (or whatever it's going to be called) then I will appear in music videos, go on talk shows, basically work my ass off to do my part in promoting the album, including a tour.
THEN, I'd organise a proper Remaster series. First up, a box set of remastered albums from For You to 1999, including outtakes and B sides from that period. A few months later, the Purple Rain remaster. For that I'd do something special. A 7 disc set, similar to what Springsteen did for The River. Organise a screening of the movie at Paisley Park, followed by a one off reunion show with The Revolution.
By then, the next album would be nearing release, so to promote that, remasters for Around The World in a Day to Lovesexy would come out in a box set, again with outtakes from the time.

This would please existing fans, potentially increase album sales and expose a new generation to my music.

Just because some of us have access to old unreleased songs doesn't mean he shouldn't do WTF he wants with them when he releases them officially.

Too many people have an ultra-specialized, gimme gimme point of view. From his perspective, if you knew the song already through a channel he did not intend, that's their problem.

Using older songs does not preclude him having plenty of new ones. He felt like using an idea he worked on years ago but never issued to song -- his prerogative.

He will never sell albums again in quantities. It's over. He's yesterday's news.

It's not for a lack of talent. It's because of he comes off as a complete jerk. Noone wants to support a jerk. He plays too many games, doesn't seem to like his fans, makes his music too hard to find, dresses like a buffoon, his "cool" attitude went out of style a long time ago, embarrasses himself regularly, makes his catalog inaccessible, doesn't use social media to his benefit, seems to enjoy doing the opposite of what people want or expect to the point that he is merely an artist who is just plain unpopular. He owes everything to his past.

At this point he could release his greatest album- something that would make "Purple Rain" sound like MPLSound and it wouldn'tattract flies.

Even if he died, I don't think you'd see sustained interest in his catalog like you would Michael Jackson, or Elvis Presley.

Anyways, have a great day smile

Not at that level, but if a decent label has hired to manage his music posthumously it could still make a huge killing. All that unreleased stuff.. music, videos, probably hundreds of scratched projects.

Your ancestors, the Negaderthals, also believed circa 2000 that Prince was over and done. After all, he had just pissed off Clive Davis, and was about to release a heavily religious album called The Raincow Children. He would tour minuscule venues compared to the arena he used to fill. All was lost, they said.

Then came 2004.

Oftentimes, people who have a flat view of life think they are realists. They believe that since wondrous things are not happening, for sure nothing great will happen again. So they are perpetual prophets of doom, certain their "common" wisdom is likely the truth.

Doomsayers think they are down to earth but in reality they are just as predictable and subjective as those super-optimistic folks who think the greatest thing will happen next.

I think I'll dare believe the future is a little better than your bitter tea leaves reading would have you believe.

Have a great day!

Well Prince can fill a stadium and play live no problem...

Talking albums though... Prince's career is running badly.

I don't have the figures for Art Official Age and Hit N Run.

I don't know very many musicians who are still on top of the record charts after 40 years. Even after 10 or 20, some are, but most are not.

Nobody is really selling records anymore let alone an almost 60 year old rockstar with 30+ years under his belt.

This!
