Has to be The Black Album on cassette from Looney T-bird's in Oxford, OH. I'd say circa 1988.

Besides the Black Album, I think it were the outtakes on the Posessed bootleg.

The first live bootleg I ever heard was Prince at Wembley on the Parade tour. The one with Ron Wood and Sting.

The first studio bootleg I can remember was the "Charade" album, so "Little Girl Wendy's Parade" must have been the first unreleased Prince song I heard.

In october 1988, I bought to a schoolyard dealer (I'm serious, Prince pirate cassettes were all of a sudden a big deal, and NOT cheap) the whole shebang (all the money stolen from my mom's purse went into it. I'm not ashamed, Ma. Thank you for ever) :

- A crappy Black Album, but you know how you develop a love for the hisses and distorsion, they become part of it to the point that when you hear the original version, it sounds too clean.
But this one, it really did sound like shit. Hey, whatcha gonna do? I laid my head against the POPB concrete the previous summer, hoping to hear the Lovesexy Tour premiere rehersals.
I would have paid to listen to some unreleased Skipper's stuff even in a pneumatic drill test chamber.

- A mix of the best of what was available in late 1988, (on a 90mn Maxwell Gold CrO2, what else?), with the following track-list :

SIDE A

- Crystal Ball (Clare Fischer version),

- Last Heart
- There's Others Here With Us

- Old Friends 4 Sale (original version), blending into

- All My Dreams

- Wonderful Ass
- Neon Telephone (original version)

- Strange Realtionship (sitar version)

- Witness 4 The Prosecution (hornless / choirless version)

SIDE B

- Movie Star, blending into

- A Place In Heaven

- Joy In Repetition (delayed Linn Toms intro, harsher mix with guitars up front)

- Data Bank (sped up version, à la Camille)

- Girl O' My Dreams, blending into

- Can't Stop This Feeling I Got, blending into

- We Can Funk

- All Day, All Night (Wendy wants to live 4ever, maybe she will)

- Baby U're A Trip (Prince on vocals)

Needless to say, I played it to death, the tape is now thinner than air, but I still have it, housemade artwork and all.

So my first unreleased song, technically speaking, is either "Le Grind" or "Crystal Ball".

No wonder we hardcore fans are more than picky when it comes to Skipper's recent outputs.
You can't go much higher than that.
I mean look at this playlist.
Who needs to listen to other artists when you have months to unveil every little detail of these masterpieces ?

And then when you do, they better be fockin' goude.
So thank you, Skipper.
Mom said I have great taste.

Oh yeah? I bought those 2 together! (the dealer had me hooked by then)

"The roof! The roof! The roof is on fire!"

And of course, the impeccable "Heaven" on Charade.

BTW, don't hate me but the first cassette copy I got of the "Black Album" was a pristine, first-generation copy from one of the unreleased copies of the LP. One of my wife's high school classmates married a Minneapolis artist from whom Prince bought several creations. Somehow, they got an LP - not sure if it was from Prince, or someone else. But it was the best-quality boot tape I ever got!

it wasnt my first, but the 30 minute version of "I Would Die 4 U" touches my soul deeply, and gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it... the jazz/funk fusion is incredible...what Lisa is playing near the end, makes it sound like the Sun Ra Arkestra

Days of wild wood guess on VH1.

Or actually I guess it would be something off of 'the work' . I had a roommate in college who had a bunch of boots and he would have played me something from that . but I don't specifically remember.

A CD called "Neon Rendezvous" that I found in a record store in Tokyo. It was a 1984 (?) rehearsal with - among others - Something In the Water, Free, Erotic City and Irresistable Bitch on it. Soundboard quality. I was hooked.

Awesome CD indeed, I have it too! wink

does anyone know why the amazing original recording of "In A Large Room With No Light" was never released?...it makes no sense that a song that great wasnt on an official album, and was not a single

1987/88 - I was in high school and lived in northwest Indiana (USA) and met a guy from another high school who would travel to MPLS once a month or more. He would come back with outtakes/rehearsals on cassette and would sell them (not cheap). He also recorded his own "radio show" that he distributed to people on his mailing list where he would play DJ and spin bootleg tracks (mostly samples of them) to promote the stuff he had to sell. He called his radio show "New Power Music." It was really like a super-early podcast of sorts.

.

He gave me a Lovesexy rehearsal cassette that had a long version of I Wish U Heaven on one side and an instrumental jam named "Funk It Up" on the other.

.

Also gave me "When Doves Scream" on cassette (a really cheap 15 min cassette). Side 2 had "Last Heart" on it in half decent quality.

.

I think I spent $20 a pop on cassette boots - a compiled version of the Camille album, horrible quality studio outtakes like Feel U Up/Irresistible Bitch, Chocolate, Moonbeam Levels (mistakenly labeled 'A Better Place 2 Die'), Purple Music, and others. I remember buying a Maxell super-quality cassette of one of the Lovesexy live shows in Europe and that was my first soundboard quality live show. Like others have written, I played that thing until the tape desintegrated. I became smart enough to get a cassette bootleg and job 1 was to dub it and only listen to the copy. That live Lovesexy show had backmasking over nearly all of Purple Rain, so that one track was ruined by some live show hoarder who kept it to himself. I was so thrilled to finally find that same show years later without the baskmasking.

The first "unreleased at that time" project - The Black Album

The first "outtakes" boot song(s) - Whatever the first songs were from The Royal Jewels LP set.

Remember The Royal Jewels? LOL! Hellaciaous quality, but man, talk about killer songs to hear for your first boot experience!
