Ancient 80s stuff, most was bought in the early mid 1990s as I got into Prince and is in POOR condition unfortunately.

.

Prince - Steven Ivory 1985 very lightweight paper back that emerged from Purple Rain fame. Funny photos, but very cheap. Surprised as Ivory is a writer for Rock and Soul, true teeny bopper stuff 3/10

.

Imp of the Perverse 1988 - Much better, cool book and some cool photos, true 80s zaniness, came out with the era of Black Album. 7/10

.

A pop Life 1989 (1990 2nd edition) - Excellent book, my copy cost $2 in 1994 and survived a flood in 2001 so a bit wet in parts. Still a great read, a real good look at his 80s output and some glowing reviews of Lovesexy and the idea that Fargnoli would manage him forever when in reality he was to be axed.9/10.

.

Next the 90s books I have.

There's a lot of books about Tupac . . a lot

And just like with Prince, many aren't worth bothering with. I'd take "Resurrection", "The Rose That Grew From Concrete", for a more general Death Row book it'd be Ronin Ro's "Have Gun Will Travel". The photo book that Gobi (who's a friend of mine) and Afeni made.... "Rebel For The Hell of It" was OK too.

I dislike the books that focus on his death like the one Cathy Scott did or the "Murder Rap" book. Those are total trash IMO.

There's many Tupac books, but I don't think anyone's really nailed THE definitive one yet. There's a LOT of untold stories that still don't appear in any book. When I made by Tupac documentary for the BBC, this became obvious quite quickly when talking to people that knew him.

Anything to do with Uptown Magazine/Per Nilsen is worth your time. That includes DMSR, The Vault and also Possessed. Each of them has errors, some revealed by basic fact checking, and some revealed by time and a decade or two of additional research. I'd also put a few other books on this list. One that rarely gets mentioned is Dez's autobiography. It isn't perfect, but it is an insider's view of working with Prince. I'd also include Let's Go Crazy by Alan Light. All of these books are worth your time.

Most of the other books out there rely heavily on the research done by the Uptown Staff. Some properly credit them but others ignore it even though it is obvious that they didn't actually do any new research.

The best books let those who participated tell their story.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Anything by Uptown magazine I want. Someone gave me a disc copy ofmost of the issues, except the great Bootleg ones. The quality of the scans areokay, but computer space heavy.

.

From what I have read, its great. The thing about Prince, is the more you read about him, the more you want to know. Other books I haven't read besides the Vault and Days of Wild include Jason Draper, Barnes and Noble picture book from about 2008/2009.

.

The ones I vaguely remember include a Carlton Books one about him (CD format from about 1994). I had a copy but the pages fell out and it was thrown out by my over zealous mother. I remember it was full of mistakes, such as a 1990 Nude tour photo of Prince and the caption "Prince started performing in the late 1970s as this picture shows". Also the book by John Ewing I think which was a visual documentary published in 1991/1992 and considered a rip off of a Documentary (1990 which had photos of the bootleg covers) by Per Nilsen.

.

Of course the other two I refuse to buy are - Thief in the Temple by Brian Morton, which is very lightweight and Toure's book - Icon? Read part of it at a friends and like her agreed it was the worst garbage I have ever read, crap about generations and how some anonymous slut told us Prince likes having 2 girls at once and he is a patient lover and also he loves to watch.

.

Really want to get the Dez one, but his website is long since out of sync and trying to push buy on it does not work. A friend and I have tried multiple times. Still he spoke to the Prince podcast and we have that at least.

.

Imagine if Prince himself wrote a book, I know we would be expecting some esoteric JW nonsense with cryptic statements, cooey come ons and bizarre mash ups of memories (He needs a teleprompter to remember lyrics of some of his 1980s songs), and it would be called something like "A true path 2 the Dawn, or the muse 2 c the new power Generation". Or in the rare chance he may be lucid and give us something accurate. But we all know Prince hates speculation and he is amused by keeping us guessing, what he is worried about wa sthat his life was mostly quite humdrum along the lines of make music, promote it, tour it, make more music, promote it, tour it and in between do it for a satellite artist or write a song/album for someone else famous.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I've read several books starting with Pop Life back in the day. I really enjoyed the Matt Thorne book from a year or two ago. I kind of fell out of the Prince music mode a lot in the 1990's and 2000's and his book helped me pick up a couple tracks that I missed along the way. I still bought the albums and knew a lot of the music but there were many internet albums, etc. and Matt's book helped here. I thought it was well researched.

I was thinking about the possibility of a Prince autobiography but I don't think he would actually do that - I think he enjoys leaving things to the imagination and wouldn't want to commit to putting out a full picture

So far it looks like I'll be ordering the Nelson books . . I'm enjoying the book I'm reading so far - very excited to finish this and then get into the Let's Go Crazy one

Thank you for proving my point: 90% of the Org (an increasingly smaller group of people BTW) loves a song, so I'm wrong for not caring about it. Note that when AOA was released suddenly a lot of people downgraded those "fantastic" albums they claimed Prince had released post-1995.

.

Oh, and you don't prove me wrong by repharsing what you said back then. Prove me wrong by linking to that thread and quoting your exact words.

The onus of proof isn't on me, buddy. It's on you. That's how it works. You're the one accusing me of something, so that's on you to prove it.

Why don't you do what you love to do and provide the source of me saying that? What's that other thing you say a lot - "Use the org search function?".... So go do that and find my post. You won't, because you know damn well I didn't say what you claim I said.

.

Indeed, you didn't order us to like the album, you merely ordered us to be excited about it.

You should know by now Bart never admits to anything.

He goes around blasting people for their spelling and faulty links, treating them with contempt, but when he does it himself he's exceptionally restrained and tolerant.

Besides, be happy your past opinions are worth searching for. His own have been 1000 % predictable for almost 2 entire decades, not much point in looking back to find out what he thought.

He's said he's done with that. But it would be nice if a good researcher/writer would pick up where he left off.

"Imp of the Perverse" (great - lost my copy somehow though)

"Prince - A Pop Life" by Dave Hill (great)

The Liz Jones one (not very good)

All of the Per Nilsen ones (fantastic)

"Possessed" (enjoyed it - interesting to read an alternate viewpoint)

Dez's book (loved it - loads of fun, and good to read a view from the inside)

"The Vault" (amazing)

The Ronin Ro book (enjoyable)

The Matt Thorne book (dire - absolutely hated it. More of a book about Matt Thorne than Prince)

"Let's Go Crazy" (really enjoyed it)

There may have been others but these are the ones I remember.

Yes and it was refreshing just to see, they had been studied in so much detail. The best thing about the book, is Thorne is obviously strung out on purple kool aid and heard those songs numerous times and nuance them in his head.

.

I love reading a book that goes beyond the whole "Oh Purple Rain was the be all and end all of Prince" a shining beacon of light, in a world that has left Prince behind.

.

Is "Let's go crazy" a decent cop, thinking of adding it to my stable (Need a new shelf at the rate I am going).

A Documentary goes up to 1992 (The Symbol album).

DMSR only covers the first decade but a lot more in depth.

Both great books. If I had to choose one it would probably be DMSR.

.

Would be great to have A Documentary II covering 1992 to present day but of course it'll never happen.
