Very overrated here, it hasn't aged well at all

The production blows. And those segues? Good god... "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I like TGE a lot. That said, I must admit that I find it hard to listen to Pussy Control. Endorphinmachine would have been a much stronger opener. Apart from that, the album is great. Favorite tracks: I Hate U, Shhh, Billy Jack Bitch and Now. See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

I agree. Out of all the places, the people here on the ORG really over hyped this album. It is a good album with many great tracks, but it hasn't aged well at all. The segues sound so ridiculous now... This was a good album amongst very average and not so good albums, which I believe why it's praised so highly here.

When weighing in on the status of an album, it helps to listen to it more than once.
Especially when it's been out for ages.
I'm OK with TGE, a few things about it annoy me but it has some very cool tracks and a couple that more than just decent. It deserves to be well-remembered.

I hate how the segue ruins the end and the tracking of Hate U! [Edited 10/5/15 14:33pm] __________________________________________________

It's brilliant and solid.

also the OP lost me at "I've been a Prince fan for 2 years" ......sorry dude but I might feel that way too while listening to an album that is 20 years old

Always thought TGE was weak also but there are others as well. New Power Soul, TRC,Planet Earth and lots if others.

Brilliant. Solid. The best since Sign O' The Times... That's exactly what I remember reading here on the ORG back in 2002 when I was trying to find this album on eBAY. It was mainly the ORG. On the other Prince sites back in the day, I never heard as much praise for TGE besides on the ORG... That is actually the reason I went and bought it online because I kept reading how many people said it's his best album since Sign O' The Times...
When you listen to a Prince album we tend to judge things based on comparison to his past, or scapegoat saying it's a personal opinion, then the next step, well critical analysis is also personal opinion... Blah blah...
There are standards that Prince has developed for himsel as an artist. Personal opinion is fine, some may think the sky is orange, that's personal opinion... But Planet Earth and Rave are not musically and artistically on the same "LEVEL" as Sign O' The Times, Purple Rain, Parade, 1999... But some PERSONAL OPINION omits the COMMON SENSE musical and artistical evaluation of PRINCE.
There's a reason why those albums such as MPLS Sound, Planet Earth are never listed on the greatest albums of all time lists...
So talking about TGE... It is a GREAT album when you line it up amongst his 90's catalogues. As a matter of fact probably besides the Love Symbol Album and a couple of the old recorded songs from Graffiti Bridge, yes I can see why many fans always praise TGE as BRILLIANT, as his best since the 80's, etc...
TGE has a couple great tracks, great ballads, other than that, I think because the album contains so much energy in songs that are not even that great like Billy Jack Bitch, Now, 319, etc... Fans categorize that as Prince's FUNK roots... Go take a listen to the old TIME albums and there is not one song on TGE that can match that pure FUNK sound...
In terms of the segues, they are laughable right now, I just played TGE loud with the windows down driving, and felt embarassed... It's an album that represents PRINCE in a turbulant time, his defiance to WB is sometimes mistaken as "ENERGY" put in songs such as Pussy Control, etc... But when you listen to this album you can just hear how badly this album OVERALL as a WHOLE has aged. I can even say this is probably the worst aged PRINCE album in his whole entire catalouge, and I mean it.
There's something very strange about the critical analysis, almost as if there is a confusing paradox between BRILLIANT and OUTDATED not in terms of a numerical age but interms of the composition of the sound that just doesn't last throughout time...
TGE is very confusing for me because amongst fans it has gotten so much praise, but the feeling didn't feel the same because to many hardcore fans, most of his work after his genius 80's run, has confused Prince fans to what's a quality sounding Prince album, artistical evolution to a musical sound that is inferior to the standards that Prince can indeed produce.
To sum it up all, everyone has their own PERSONAL OPINION, but I don't like to use that as a scapegoat when I try to critique Prince's music from a fan's perspective knowing the capabilties Prince has...
In conclusion, I really feel besides a few great songs, this album is the worst aged album in his entire catalouge. It is even embarassing to listen to songs like Pussy Control, and Now and 319. Sounds like a one hit wonder 90's rap group like 2 Live Crew... This is not an album I would ever want to represent the genius and musical legacy that Prince has made. [Edited 10/5/15 19:09pm]

Yep it's a crappy album. The most overrated (here on the org) Prince album.

I agree."P Control" is ridiculous I wish he had chosen a stronger, better song to open the album with.

So according to your logic my favorite albums shouldn't be Dirty Mind, Parade and Lovesexy.
The album being 20 years old it's not exactly the problem.
I just i don't enjoy Prince sounding like some wannabe. His ballads in the 90s were great but some of his rap songs
In my humble opinion
80's prince > 00's prince > 90's prince.

TGE and Love Symbol are Prince's best albums of the 90s.

Why is that though... I remember this place always had the most praise for TGE compared to the other Prince sites...

"Eye Hate U" is arguably the finest single that Prince released in the 90s I remember when I first heard it on the radio,I nearly lost my mind (lol)....I had a poorly recorded bootleg version that I had been playing for awhile, but to finally hear it on the radio in crystal clear quality.....wow!!! This song is a masterpiece.

and this album has so many amazing outtakes, too!
Ripopgodazippa,Hide The Bone,Acknowledge Me,Interactive,Days Of Wild,etc....

The outtakes are better than the album.

stop it
but I was disappointed when I found out that he removed "Days Of Wild" and "Ripopgodazippa" from the album. Those are superb songs!!

Songs like Days Of Wild, Ripopgodazippa, Acknowledge Me, Interactive... Along with the great songs like Shhh, I Hate U... Would've made TGE an amazing album...
It's too bad, TGE has aged really horribly.

Why is that though... I remember this place always had the most praise for TGE compared to the other Prince sites... I think it's because a lot of fans here from that time were listening to these songs being performed at shows live before the album was released. And I wouldn't doubt that they sounded amazing. Has Prince ever not been amazing live? Especially when performing new songs that he is passionate about at the time? The studio tracks didn't translate well. His studio prowess unlike his live output was sorely lacking.

I enjoy the album, I tend to pick tracks to play instead of the whole album. I, however, play the Come album as whole. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

It's funny though... You're a new PRINCE fan first discovering TGE in 2015 and stating it isn't as strong as his other albums (Which I agree...) Vs an older Prince fan listenting to the TGE in 1995... It goes to show you that TGE has not stood the test of time and hasn't aged well at all...
