To the Emancipation haters... would a one disc set have made you any happier with the album?

This is not another of the bi-monthly threads where we all compile our own 12 track Emancipation, I am merely asking the detractors (and fans alike) if they think Emancipation would've been better with less material?

Would your personal 12-track playlist have rated alongside his most popular 90s albums like The Gold Experience and Love Symbol or do your issues with the album lie more with the quality rather than the sheer quantity of the music?

No, because really, I think Prince albums are overall inconsistent after SOTT. Why should "Emancipation" be any different?

Plus, get 10 people in a room, and get 10 different opinions on the perfect "Emancipation" track listing.

One disc wouldn't have made me "happier". "Emancipation" is most noteworthy for its audaciousness and size. A single disc, no matter the quality, would be more forgotten

If I was allowed to pick the tracks, then yes. If Prince or anyone else was thinning it to one disc, then no. Nobody ever has the same tracks in there list when there's a single disc thread.

It could conceivably have 12 tracks which would make it Prince's worst ever album for me.

There's a track list for an album which I'd never play. And I don't doubt I've picked some people's favourite tracks here too.

The more discs the merrier, any Prince song is better than no Prince song.

I agree with databank, it's an awesome perfect album!

I like how each disc has a different mood so you can listen to whatever fits your mood at the time.

I love all three discs but I do lean towards disc two a lot as many of the songs are so very beautiful.

If a single album was released, people would have just moaned about wanting a 3 disc set.

lol wink lol

I don't know if I'm qualified to answer the question, because I'm not an Emancipation hater. I think it's a fine album, although I admit it sounds a bit too clean and polished. And with 36 songs, there's bound to be a few weak ones. Big deal. It has some gorgeous songs on it. I'm happy with Emancipation the way it is. cool

The more the better for me but I think a lot of the songs suffered with the production/sound he went for. If he had the 95 NPG on more tracks than just Betcha By Golly Wow, Saviour and One Of Us it wouldn't have been so plasticky and lifeless in parts.
.
Both Jam Of The Year and Emancipation deserve to sound better and I wonder how good they could have been with the bombastic sound of Michael B and Sonny.
.
Still some great songs on it - The Love We Make is stunning and sounded awesome when he's played it the last year or so. There was a recent thread about more recent material not being played live, therefore affecting the popularity and this song is a great example of that.

Agree,

I was actually shocked when I first listened to it because I was so eager to hear it (him being free, triple disc to go totally creative) to then hear that this sounded so very very safe. On second listen these songs are not so bad at all but the edge was taken off and they polished it into a very safe sounding record.

I'll never understand the fans that completely dismiss Emancipation in its entirity. There's just too much music there and it's simply too diverse to make such a blanket statement. How can you be a Prince fan and not find at least something to like out of those 36 songs?

They are not Prince fans. They are Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney fans who happen to be fans of Prince's music from the 80's and who should have moved on in 1995 instead of continuing buying his records and moan about them.

Been a Prince fan since 1989, listened to Prince exclusivley for 10 years and nothing else! I have no bad words for P and have supported him for over 25 years. I love every single album except Emancipation! I have tried multiple times to like it but I just don't! So for me it is his worst album.

So I don't think you can asume or question my "Fandum".

That said, there is more than enough great material on Emancipation for a double LP if you don't mind the decidedly not organic production.

I'm listening to it right now... Nothing is jumping out at me. I like a few but I would really struggle to make one disc I would come back to a 1000 times.

Fair enough I guess.

There isn't really a Prince album in his catalogue where I don't at least like a handful of songs. I would say 3121 and Batman are probably my least favourites, but even they have some good moments.

Different strokes for different folks.

Personally I would have liked more songs... Like, if there was 100 songs say, and I liked 30 of them, that's 30 songs more than what I had before.
