i just got through listening to the rainbow children, lotusflower and art official age back to back to back and, man, those albums have a flow to them. they're a better triple album than any i think prince might be able to conceive intentionally.

it got me to thinking what other albums, seperated by years, eras and with other albums between, might go together for a nice extended listening experience. and specifically what albums might hitnrun fit with that might dilute my distaste for it?

rave, 20ten, hitnrun....?

bootlegs, live, protege all encouraged for inclusion in a 3 album listen...go.

Yeah I was thinking that as well but kind of felt it was more a (dreadful) attempt at a rap album. I probably need to listen to Elixer again tbh, I just remember hating it

You know, the Vanity 6 album would probably fit since that's more or less what it was doing as well. Except, you know, the Vanity 6 album is awesome.

There was some amazing dance crap on CE, not just hip-hop. I can deal with the rap songs but those dance tracks

I'm in love with Elixer, though, I find it vastly superior to CE, COTS and HnR

Gold Nigga = jazz hip-hop fusion, very 1993.

Exodus: P-funk revival was the hype in 1995.

well i'm choosing them based on "modern dance-pop sound of the time" to fit them together, rather than modern whatever genre of the time. I sorta feel there's a bit more going on in the Glamorous Life but sure we're only throwing out ideas here...

Agreed about Carmen and Mayte's albums though, there's some decent stuff in there but you can't be having them on with other people around!

I agree with the first two. Prince really understood the "zeitgeist" in those years. And I was really digging the P-Funk in the 90s, but I don't recall it being a hype except maybe in '96, when George Clinton was bringing the Mothership back on stage. (He did that in Central Park, New York and I and many others were hoping he would do something similar on stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival, but that was a big letdown. It was just a George Clinton and a Bootsy Collins concert squeezed into one hour. The two of them were on stage together for no more than 15 minutes. So much for a hype...) And as for Carmen & Mayte, oh well, just the old "she gave him pussy and he gave her a record" (Rick James' words) story...

Not sure 'bout the US but in Europe and (it seems) Japan there was a huge Pfunk revival that was targeted in parts by the overflow of rap songs sampling Pfunk and in parts by the overall 70's nostalgia wave. It wasn't a mainstream thing, mind u, but among hipsters, artists and media people it was really strong

Yep, I saw all of the above in Paris, and Clinton as well.

There was that 3 Clinton shows in 3 nights series in a very small club, summer 95, and the second show lasted FIVE hours. It was pretty amazing

yeah, man. i've been on that revival wave the whole time and loved every minute of it. it's quite a rabbit hole to dive down. from doggystyle, to pfunk, to soulquarians and vanguards, to norman whitfield and family stones, from dam funk to daptone and stax and otis fucking redding.
