I don't agree with the bolded comment because there are so many songs that I can skip and not miss while others praise: Housequake (luv the SoTT video performance but the song itself feels like manufactured funk) Play in the Sunshine (never did anything for me) ... at least two dozen others that bore me... - But I get off on Batdance, Violet the Organ Grinder, and Ain't Gonna Miss U When You're Gone and I've read posts by others that don't like those joints at all. - There are a handful of artists that I feel compelled to devour all their work, even if it doesn't 'click' with me right away. When Prince passes away, if that goes according to natural causes will be before me, who knows what will or will not be released from the Vault so I actually feel like every album and song is a gift. Except Baltimore, that song can suk it longtime....

For me it isnt about the music. I do think that Prince's quality of music has taken a fall somewhat over the years, but I can live with that. If I think any music is shit I will say so. Likewise if its good. No problem, no worries. Im still here giving Prince my money (when he lets me). But what gets my goat up with Prince is what goes on outside of the music. Teases on Twitter that go nowhere, projects which were announced as imminent coming to a halt. Moving his music from one outlet to another, removing from other outlets only for it to appear there again. The continuous removal of content from the likes of YouTube, takedown notices, suing fans, shutting down fan sites, websites coming and going with little regard to the customer, album launches that ignore the album and all the cryptic nonsense that worked when I was 14, not now Im 43. Losing Housequake was a no no. Threatening to sue fans was a no no. The new WB love-in and the announcement of the PR remaster was a no no. Lotusflow3r.com was a no no.

Some really interesting perspectives in this thread. Someone earlier who mentioned that us "oldtimers" are wanting Prince to halt the aging process, but actually I was thinking the same thing but more directed either at him or maybe some of the younger fans because I think what some of the older fans are perceiving is the feeling that Prince is the one chasing the fountain or youth, or the best ways to remain commercially viable and it feels just like that, that he is trying so hard. When he would release an album like Parade or ATWD you had a feeling that he was really proud of what he had created and that he was being true to himself as an artist. And if you could get with that, then great, and if not, then he understood that too but he was still proud of his creation. If some of these newer releases catches some commercial success, then good for him whether I personally like them or not. For me, the newer stuff just doesn't challenge my ears enough. Too much of "popular" music today is just too repetitive and again, not challenging to my ear. So that might be why some of the latter releases just didn't do it for me. TRC I know has stirred up much discussion and I feel many may have not been able to hear it due to the struggles they may have with the strong religous compenent, but you cannot deny that is one that is certainly challenging to the ear and gives you multiple sounds, directions, tempos, instumentation. That might be what is so missing with some of the newer material for me anyway.
I certainly cannot know if deep in his heart he genuinely feels good about this finished product or any of the other recent projects, but if he is, and he is really being true to himself as an artist, then good for him. But if he looks at himself in the mirror and feels that he is just "chasing it" then that might be what some of us older fans are feeling. For me, I feel like Lotus Flower was something he really put his heart into creating.
But I also I empathize with the struggle of still being in the "popular" music scene and trying to maintain/recreate commercial success when you are pushing 60. And so I may empathize but cannot relate to how much pressure that has to be. But his formula for success is not what maybe some us are feeling that he is following, as again, he seems to be "chasing it", whether that be with apparently dating young girls, still going to clubs, trying to latch on to the flavors of the month like Jay Z, or the constant attempt at discovering the latest up and commer which never materializes.
Anyway, I think we just want him to be Prince! It is being Prince that made it that even today when he gives someone an award, or goes on a talk show, the stars around him genuinely appear to be in awe. He didn't have to try, he just did, and people may not have liked his music but respected his immense talent. Kinda long winded here, sorry!

Don't get me wrong...over the past 25 years he has released enough good songs in my book to fill up 2 cds. I do not expect him to be at the same level he was in his prime. His prime is one of the greatest primes any pop artist has had. There can be no denying that beginning with D&P he began to follow trends instead of setting them. Nevertheless I still dug that album and the followup annd even Come/TGE but after that the magic was gone. I'm open minded and I give each new release a fair shot but I admit what I'm really interested in is his 1978-1989 output remasterd. The only thing I sorta hold against him is his awful attitude towards his fans and his assholish behavior to all associated artists (like not letting the Time use their firgin name- what a tosser Prince can be).
