the paradox of explaining why you're disappointed with Prince, without feeling like a troll

There's many, many hundreds of people on this site, that discovered Prince after the 80s, or heard and fell in love with his music and performances that were created this year. Today. It's beautiful, you've got SO much pleasure ahead of you
music

I csn only speak for myself, but as a teenager in the 80s, prince wasn't just another fan crush. The guy was *otherworldly* - unlike any artist I'd seen before - but with parts of them all - and I was blown the fuck away. Forever. He was like a superhero. The music was always interesting, the performances superhuman. Millions of us were BEDAZZLED. You know like MJ doing the moonwalk at Motown 25? Here was the songwriter, musician, singer, dancer version of that.

We never knew what he would do next.

The disappointment comes when your superhero proves himself to be human. We KNOW he's a great performer still, fantastic, and so on.

But we believed in magic for a while because of Prince. Still do, but those that love everything he does - can you relate.

I dissagree with this part. If Prince didn't act like a robot all the time, he'd dissapoint me much less.

I really don't. Prince could take the route of releasing new music every four years, playing whatever games the record companies want and be considered an untouchable living legend. But he doesn't want to do that. He wants to release the music he wants to release whenever he wants to release it.

Prince in the 80s was the same except he gave all his other spare music to other groups or put it in the vault.

It's kinda funny how many people are ready to declare Hit N Run a complete failure when we haven't even heard the full thing. There's two volumes left. Would you be panicking the same way if he released Crystal Ball the same way? lol Chill out.

He was just SO fricking good though, in his day. Bum rushed all the 'legends', the songwriters, performers, band leaders, arrangers, producers, up til that point. It was fucking incredible to witness.

You realize this site is kinda notorious for ripping Prince apart, right?

Prince.org is a forum that exists in the sole purpose of hating, disrespecting, criticizing and insulting the musician Prince, his collaborators and, when possible, everyone else on the planet except for the website's moderators.

"Prince, insult his music and insult him even more": This forum is devoted to the hate of Prince and everything he does. That's where people can claim the Holy Truth: Prince's music is a disaster except when he plays rock music, and Prince is an insane man, blabbering bullshit all the time. Serious threads about Prince's music are tolerated but generally locked after a few weeks.

I still feel that way. I've never felt disappointed in him and it bemuses me when people say that.

Why would you feel disappointed? Because you don't like some songs? You can't expect to like everything. That's unrealistic. Because you don't agree with him on something he said? Big deal - if you expect to do that then you're projecting yourself on him.

There's no paradox.

You can believe in his artistry without liking every single thing he does.

You can be supportive of his independent stance without approving of every move he makes.

You can adore, love, like, be unimpressed, dislike, detest and hate specific songs or albums.

If not this one, then the next one. Who said I (or you) have to be THE kind of person that will appreciate his latest?

Lots of people swear by The Truth. I only enjoy a few songs -- not because the other songs are bad, but because I can only listen to a few introspective songs without getting bored. I'm not the kind of person for whom The Truth was made. That alone doesn't make it a bad album, just not the album for me.

HitnRun has its charms for some of us and is a complete fiasco for others. I don't see this as Prince's failure, he always tried to please a very varied fanbase that reflects his stylistic breadth. Some albums will turn off a segment of his fans and please another because they are more specialized.

When Prince tries to please everyone by including songs from different genres, it has tended to please fewer overall with time. That tends to reflect our increasingly specialized diet of music. In the 80s, radio stations played a more varied mix but now with ultra-specialized formats and the ability of audiences to pick only what they want on a given album, it's a different world and a different sensibility. The days when albums could be "a little of everything" and not be described as "hodgepodge" have been over for a while.

What I dislike is when people attack Prince so personally for not living up to their personal expectations -- that's just unrealistic and a little neurotic, considering our world today.

putting aside the fact he's an arrogant, selfish asshole (disappointing indeed) I, like many fans, feel he lost what made him so special from 1979-1989. The decline began with Batman and except for the TGE he hasn't released one album out of way too many that holds it's own to his classic era. Post-WB he really lost his mystique with so much mediocrity and zero quality control. New Prince songs used to be an exciting prospect but for the past two decades it's mostly miss. Just too much unecessary product.

Sometimes I think older fans expect Prince to cancel the aging process for them and make them feel cool again by miracurously defying the laws of pop music.

Completely agree with u... Being a Prince fan is being able to evolve to different and unique sounds, that's the diversity, challenge and sometimes torture of being a Prince fan...

Some old timers like don't like anything after his 80's release, and many people will say that last great Prince album is TGE. Others keep saying AOA was terrible, etc.. Opinions are people's opinions, but being able to evolve is the acceptance of the art, weither u agree or not, or like the sound or concept of the album.

Do I think his 80's albums are the best, ofc, but I'm not going to pout around every album... I hated Planet Earth, it's a total bore when you disect the standards of PRINCE's work, but I still accept the evolution of his work and as a fan I will continue to listen and buy every new album.

I lowered my standards for Prince a long time ago. I'm used to it now. I'll stop listening once I no longer enjoy waiting for the next album or seeing how he changes. I can't see that happening, so it's all good.

I think he is better than ever. His music since The Rainbow Children in my opinion has been great!! Only exception would be 20Ten and Plectrum(which I really don't count because half of it is not really him) which was just ok. The rest I have no complaints with. His musical output is just fine with me. I think people get disappointed becasue he does not have "hits" and sell millions. To that I say who cares. For some reason it seems people have to be told something is good for them to like it by the radio and masses. I am so glad P does not care about the people who constantly nag about he doesn't make music like he did in the 80s. Honestly why are those people still following him anyway. Its been 20 something years. If your not happy with just move on, PLEASE!! He will never have the commercial success he once did mainly because he does not want to and will not try to. I like Prince because he is constantly changing his music and doing different musical styles. This latest album is a prime example. Prince doing electronc and hip hop is just awesome. What other artist can do what he does? Noone. He can literally do every type of music and thats what makes him great. I hope he continues to be bold and daring and do new styles of music and challenge himself like Hitnrun. This album is his black album for the 2000's for me. Its just strange and out there but in a great way. I love it!! He will make more pop cds for you pop fans but please just let us enjoy(at least the ones of us that enjoy it) the 1 electro/hip hopish album he has made in his whole career without everyone constantly dogging him since he hasnt made a good song in their eyes since 1988. Why are those fans still around is what I don't get. The org is just such a downer these days as this used to be a great place to chat with Prince fans but now it seems like most(not all) just really hate Prince(which I know is not the case) but gheez why is everyone so negative here? My rant is over so everyone here can dog me out now and tell me that I should leave. I apologize in advance for liking Prince. I know thats forbidden here

Yep, he keeps trying, knowing that his older hardcore fans keep lamenting that he did not have a hit in years. He tried to please us and to cater to us, the hardcore, by releasing one typical diverse Prince album after the other, and even to approximate his old sound.

He decided to hire those young musicians, for better and for worse. For better because he is in a way passing on some of his legacy to them, teaching them how to work with his material, and in the process perhaps gain something from their energy. For worse because maybe he could be working with big names instead, people that would Johnny Cash him, like Rick Rubin like Bart keeps hoping.

But he's Prince and he doesn't want the 20th Century Master treatment just yet. He may very well want exactly what half the Org is hoping for, the difference is that it's his Peter Pan Syndrome, and some of us have their own version of that syndrome.

I'd say: guys, be careful what you wish for. There's a damn good chance a lot of us would feel much older if he reunited with the Revolution and got the Johnny Cash treatment. The way he's working now may well b a blessing in disguise. Plenty of time left for Old Master treatment.

clapping

What irritates me is how certain people are like angry at Prince for not delivering what they expect, and will feel complelled to create a new thread nearly every week to share their anger with the world (or, I suspect, in the childish hope Prince will read it and, after a decade of seeing a "Prince is over and done" thread popping-up every week, suddenly decide to record what it is those people want, whatever it is though that they want, because no one knows.)

Huh?

IDK just buy other records. If u don't like the bread of one particular baker are u gonna write a new thread every week to complain about the bread for years or just move on and buy ur stuff at another baker's? I know we have a more intimate/emotional relationship to music than to bread but see what I mean...

Like Militant I don't have this problem with Prince cuz to me the Prince of today usually delivers just as much as the Prince from 20 years ago, but for example I'm not so hot on Björk's or Tricky's latest records even though they were my heroes in the late 90's, but I ain't friggin' gonna get mad at them. They don't owe me. I just keep an eye on what they do and listen to the stuff I dig more instead, and there's plenty!
