WHen Prince name drops other artists..

Is it supposed to make him more real and cool as an artist??

How many times does he have to remind people that he loves Sly and Joni without being asked

and What difference does it make to a music listener that he loves all this stuff..

Now i see him mentioning Jay-z a lot to make himself relevant and cool again

I can't think of an artist who name drops as frequently as Prince and

It's kind of sad that he needs to do this to convince people that his music is “realor relevant

in the past when he just said "who did i grow up listening to? ehm....sonny T"
people would complain prince was playing silly games and should just tell us

what his influences were (eventhough Sonny obviously was an influence).

now that prince can't shut up about his influences, people are mad again lol

I'm thinking that might've been clever wordplay on Prince's/Josh's part. I think the album itself was the collaboration.

yep.. it's kind of sad that a big artist like Prince needs name association with Jay-z to have people's interest in his new music.

I'm sure he was dying for Beyonce to win the grammy for album of the year so he could get more publicity from that moment.

he does it way too often..

Even in his music.. He'll mention, Common out of nowhere...

or in an interview he'll throw out name like James Brown and Springsteen out of nowhere

to make himself look more artistic and authentic.

People often complain that Prince lives in his own walled-off world. His name dropping of other musicians, as much as I roll my eyes at it, is evidence that he is very plugged in to the music world at large. He may not be cutting edge or know legions of indie artists. But I'm happy to see glimpses of his own personal tastes. I just drank a ton of rye whiskey so maybe this makes no sense.

You know there's a good percentage of Prince fans who run out and buy what Prince says he listens to. Esperanza Spaulding springs to mind. Something they hate but pretend to love because Prince does.

He's almost made it a mission to show how he's into the good music not the bad one..

as if there is such a thing as good music and bad music

Look at how important it was for him to have his influences page on tidal the way he wanted with the names he wanted

It's all part of the image.. he likes us to think that he's a real artist with great taste in music.

You'll never hear Prince admit he loves anything on radio because that would hurt it in his eyes..

Prince is not human and never had guilty pleasures.. He's different

that's what he wants his fans to believe

As a teenager I discovered Joni, Parliament/Funkadelic and Sly via Prince - either interviews with him, or in biographies of him.

I think it's OK for him to mention other artists that he likes to listen to.No problem there.

But in a recent interview,he was talking about Beyonce and how she isn't making as much money as she should be making (from her CD sales) nuts I was like,WTF?! That woman is worth over $200 million! I don't see her complaining about anything, lol. It's disappointing to see him talk like that.

When I hear him mention the names of some of these idiots, I already know that his latest product is going to be shitty because it gives me an indication of who he's been listening to and might be influenced by which might reflect on what he makes himself.

It's like he's trying to get every artist to join his anti-record company "crusade" lol I doubt that Beyonce will be writing "slave" on her face anytime soon, lol

Yes, me too! The Joni reference in The Ballad of Dorothy Parkers isreally nice, it becomes part of the story. The James Brown sample in Gett Off is also fun. On Musicology however, he overdoes it. And then we have Old Skool Company where I guess name checking other artists is the whole point of the song. confused

Prince never mentioned Sly until somewhere in the 1990s. Yet it was obvious Sly was a major influence. It must have pissed him off mightily that Sly worked with Jesse.

poor Beyonce.. I'm about to lose sleep over this.. lol

He's obviously been trying to be closer friends to Jay-z and Beyonce by kissing ass

and saying dumb things like this to get more attention with his new release

ha..this reminded me that he even had Meshell's Ndegeocello written on his face during a televised performance

“Like Cee Lo Green in a sea of red light“.. I'm sure Prince came up with that for Judith lol

I have no problem with Prince name dropping artists. If anyone is allowed to do that....he should be. I swear he almost needs a manual to keep up with what he should and should not do.

There are people dying of starvation in the world and Prince is worried about 200 million worth Beyonce not making money like she should lol

I think he meant Andre 3000 and big boi from outkast, they had the biggest album of 2003 and it was clearly influenced by Prince

But he got to work with Miles Davis instead plus Sly was a wreck, so perhaps it's better this way.

Why? It's true even big artists are not making as much money as they could be and that means those who are less successful are more at risk of accumulating debts.

Music is not just about the 10 big acts that sell the most records, there are heaps of acts that have to work within this system and not break their neck. I know some folks that have two other jobs on top of their music "career". which basically is an expensive, financially risky hobby.
