I think it's OK for him to mention other artists that he likes to listen to.No problem there.

But in a recent interview,he was talking about Beyonce and how she isn't making as much money as she should be making (from her CD sales) nuts I was like,WTF?! That woman is worth over $200 million! I don't see her complaining about anything, lol. It's disappointing to see him talk like that.

Why? It's true even big artists are not making as much money as they could be and that means those who are less successful are more at risk of accumulating debts.

Music is not just about the 10 big acts that sell the most records, there are heaps of acts that have to work within this system and not break their neck. I know some folks that have two other jobs on top of their music "career". which basically is an expensive, financially risky hobby.

I think Prince talking about Beyoncé's financial struggles (I can barely even type that without laughing) is a sad sign of his money obsession.

Prince reminds me of the young kids who think they are more cool because of the music that they listen to.. Only difference is he listens to Larry Graham and is 57 years old.. lol

People often complain that Prince lives in his own walled-off world. His name dropping of other musicians, as much as I roll my eyes at it, is evidence that he is very plugged in to the music world at large. He may not be cutting edge or know legions of indie artists. But I'm happy to see glimpses of his own personal tastes. I just drank a ton of rye whiskey so maybe this makes no sense.

He's almost made it a mission to show how he's into the good music not the bad one..

as if there is such a thing as good music and bad music

Look at how important it was for him to have his influences page on tidal the way he wanted with the names he wanted

It's all part of the image.. he likes us to think that he's a real artist with great taste in music.

You'll never hear Prince admit he loves anything on radio because that would hurt it in his eyes..

Prince is not human and never had guilty pleasures.. He's different

that's what he wants his fans to believe

The sad thing is he has a hack like Joshua Worston glossing his albums with horrible trendy overused sound effects like the "Prize Patrol" horn at the start of Art Official Cage that had been done over and over and over again....Auto Tune, next thing you know Prince is going to find some 18 year old to convince him to put a "hidden track" at the end of a physical cd and act like it is something he invented. Oh, wait, he's done that already.

But name dropping Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, etc... won't happen, because those guys never tried to pander to young people at the point of exhaustion that Prince has. And if millions of young people were buying Prince's albums, he could at least argue why he insists on sounding "young." But he simply has lost touch with his audience. And I doubt he is recording for himself anymore, just pandering. And he really thinks Josh is some young jedi master. What has Josh ever done? Copy trends. And that's it.

what can I say..

The guy all these years have been trying to tell people that the music he loves is better than what's on the radio and now he is making bad versions of it with amateurish production

I think he meant Andre 3000 and big boi from outkast, they had the biggest album of 2003 and it was clearly influenced by Prince

that would make more sense.. but it's still a terrible line lol

He agree with Op he does the name-dropping too often, in his music and outside of it..

He even goes as far as mentioning a name of Mother's finest album on Funknroll to try to make his new stuff funkier

"Another mother further your commiting a crime"

it's become annoying for me

As a teenager I discovered Joni, Parliament/Funkadelic and Sly via Prince - either interviews with him, or in biographies of him.

.

Prince never mentioned Sly until somewhere in the 1990s. Yet it was obvious Sly was a major influence. It must have pissed him off mightily that Sly worked with Jesse.

Suppose that depends on what you meant by "mentioned"?

Did he not cover "thank you for talking to me africa" in 1984?

As for Jesse, you might be right but, to paraphrase your common response -where is your proof? You're just making stuff up!

How are these 2 things comparable?? being short is something he can't control, name dropping is something he should be able to control but can't because he wants us to associate him with great acts that have nothing to do with his music

so Purple pick of the week on tidal is about Prince once again trying to show folks he's into "good" music rather than the bad one..

Why am i not surprised by this?

Typical Prince trying to add more authenticity to his artistry by picking songs this time instead of name-dropping ..
