i think where a lot of people go wrong is assuming that someone being passionately dissapointed (for want of a better way of putting it) in a prince release means the person isn't really into his music any more and is just looking for an excuse to bag him

i think often the opposite is true... the importance of prince's music to an individual might be the reason they're so passionate when they see him releasing stuff they consider to be phoned-in crap

YES. Well said. People act like I need to turn in my Prince fan card because I don't like HITNRUN. Well, if I had turned it in when I didn't like MPLShit, I wouldn't have had it when I loved 20ten and AOA. And if I turn it in now, do I need to reapply when I love Free Urself or Phase Two or whatever the next album is?

I don't recall you repeating like a mantra that Prince hasn't released a decent thing in 20 years, as proven by the part in bold.

I wrote on this very forum that I hated PE when released in 2007, and that I was totally hermetic to Back In Time 6 months ago. Then I'd rave on Mplsound or Superconductor. Similarly I can think Prince behaves like an ass on one thing (lotusflow3r.com) and not condemning everything he does or say as if he was the dictator of a horrible totalitarian regime raping little girls for breakfast!

The people I think are doing little more than trolling are those who create a new thread every week to say that Prince is over and done and bitch on nearly everything he does, says, or releases, continuously, no matter what it is.

Some people like Bart do that but at least Bart often provides usueful information, so he fulfills a purpose in this community.

Certain other people, honestly, it's like they're only here because Prince once slept with their girlfriend.

IDK, say u hate HnR all u want, I'm fine with that. Say u hate everything but 2 or 3 songs since 1995 and I say get outta here u ain't bringing anything to this community.

Thanks. I appreciate it. I've had people imply I'm a pure naysayer because I don't like HITNRUN. It's annoying. Do I need to praise Rave a few more times? smile

What I see is it's all about WHICH albums you like. If you dislike HITNRUN or AOA - you're a hater, if you dislike Planet Earth it's ok because it's Planet Earth. Now I like PE, but I'm still a hater because I don't like 3121, 20Ten, Musicology etc. I'm left scratching my head over what makes someone a "hater" or not other than general consensus on certain pop albums shrug

I don't think real haters post on this site. This is still a fan site of sorts. Some albums are good, some are less good. But a) it is Prince, so still we buy/listen to all albums and b) it is a personal matter of taste. Taste can be discussed for ever, but in fact it is pointless to discuss taste.

The best paradox is I'm sure I'm considered just one step below KCool as a supporter

while King Sausage actually loves far more of Prince's music than I do.

Ambiguity is where it's at in this world.

Here are some facts:
Gravity.
Cells.
All bachelors are unmarried.

Here are some opinions:
"Eggs taste like shit"
"I like dogs"
"HITNRUN Phase I sucks"
"HITNRUN Phase I doesn't suck"

It's unfortunate that not too many folks seem to tell the difference around here.

To be fair, there's a difference between someone expressing they don't like an album, and someone posting 40 times on a single thread that an album is a "steaming pile of shit" or whatever.

The latter is just trolling behavior.

Nobody ever says posting something positive 40 times on a single thread is trolling behavior. There's no difference. It's all discussion.

That is rude - no question about it. But to be honest, I haven't seen a whole lot of that. What I see more of is, "You don't like HITNRUN. You hate Prince. bawl " Or, "You're just old and don't get modern music. hmph! " Or, "If you hate Prince so much, why are you here?"

I was called a "hater" before AOA even came out, for expressing the opinion that, based on what I had heard at that point (Breakfast Can Wait, and various and sundry snippets), I had serious reservations about whether I'd like the album. Keep in mind that my comments were based on content - not on personalities or any other ad hominem.

Everybody just needs to lighten up. It's entertainment (or should be), for crying out loud.

EXACTLY. People are so quick to brand others as haters or ass-kissers. For god's sake, we're discussing Prince albums here, not the Syrian refugee crisis.

That gave me my great laugh of the day!!!

....

Always love your posts man though I don't always agree with your opinion. But I like that you discuss and explain your opinion. When someone just says "THIS SUCKS" that's when I (as a Prince-can-do-no-wrong person) get irritated/jaded by opinions on the Org.

warning2all

Some of the people are afraid to admit when something like HITNRUN sucks, because they are afraid of change. They are afraid of their mortality and the mortality of their hero. Prince getting old and starting to really suck is the natural progression of life, and people are in denial, and want to believe he's as good as he's ever been; but it's not true. The Prince of 2015 does not resemble the Prince of 1986.

It is the natural way of things that things/people get old and lose their youth, vibrancy, energy, abilities. And sadly, Prince as an artist- has lost his youth, vibrancy, energy and abilities. Josh Welton is Princes crutch/walking stick/wheel chair propping him up- and the results are sad.

To criticize Prince is like a personal attack- because you're attacking people's tastes. This Prince.org has some funny expectations--like you must say "Planet Earth" sucks or "Jughead" is the worst. You're supposed to say that. But you can't say AOA sucks.

I don't mind "Planet Earth" or "Jughead"--but it's clear Prince, with HITNRUN is out of gas, maybe for good. That's OK. I'm not who I used to be either and I can admit it. That's life.

Another thing that perplexes me lately is that I have seen several posts, including this one, that makes it seem like people that like Prince's output are somehow bullying those that don't like Prince's output.

To my recollection, it seems like the other way around - by a wide margin. The people that don't like Prince's output seem to be much more hostile and antagonistic about expressing their negative reviews, many times insulting those that do like said output.

It's both sides. But my thread is aiming at something larger. The paradox I mentioned. Why do some people get labeled as "haters" because they don't like the newest album even when they love past albums that most people dislike? It doesn't make any sense. Is there a psychological need for people to get everyone in line to love the newest album? Why's it cool to bash Rave or Planet Earth but not HITNRUN?

"It doesn't make any sense." That describes many of our comments on here at any given time. For instance, I'm really liking this album now -- after mocking it a bit. Why? Is it because it's a grower? Is it because it's Wednesday? I don't know. I just know that now I like "Mr. Nelson" more than I should. Damn U Prince and your catchy steel drums.

I’ve grown up listening to Prince. I’ve been a fan since the first time I saw Little Red Corvette on MTV in the 80s. I know my problems with his music are my own and should not be seen as anything more than a personal opinion. I’ve found something to like in almost every album the man has put out. I really like HNR. It’s a fun little record. However (and here’s the paradox), it disappoints me tremendously. I’m getting older. The music I find myself listening to the most—the music I turn to time and again—has depth and substance. Party records… I can’t seem to muster the energy for more than a few listens. I don’t have the time. I’m a grown ass man. I expect more from my entertainment these days. I want to listen to something important, something honest. Again, I like HNR for what it is. But those songs are lacking. There’s no Time or Way Back Home, no When Doves Cry or Computer Blue, no Reflection, no Anna Stesia, no My Computer, no Come Back, no Until You’re in My Arms Again. In many ways, Purple Rain and The Rainbow Children (yes, even with the heavyhanded Christianity and ridiculous narration) are the most important albums he's ever made. Are they as good as some of his party records? Maybe not, but they’re honest. I'm ready for Prince to do something important again. It's time to put away childish things.

U wanna know why? Because everyone here think they're music critics, experts with so much taste AND knowledge that they're entitled to a scholar type of opinion.

It's true for some, but many are just clueless people who don't know Lady Gaga from John Coltrane and still believe that because they're (and I quote) entitled to an opinion, they're entitled to voice it.

Some others are also entitled to claim the earth is flat in GD. And you wouldn't believe the non-Prince related shit I read on Facebook.

Well yeah, they're entitled to voice their opinion. It's a human right aw'igh' I can't fight that. Still, I think some people should be discouraged by friends and relatives from voicing their opinion on the internet. U know, for the future of human kind's sake nod

U're right but online it's hard. IRL I have found my ways to stay away from utter nonsense and complete idiots and I have reasonable debates with reasonable people, and when someone speaks nonsense I'm just like OK, and if they won't be reasoned I just listen and nod and walk away. Online for some reason I can't totally avoid them, maybe because I also see (and I mean out of the Org) how certain young and influenceable people are falling for nonsense and it makes me mad. But yeah u're damn right. I wish I had half the wisdom I have IRL when I'm online nod
