Yea I read that, too, and was especially surprised that it came from such a knowledgable long-time fan like Jon. I don't hear it at all. Like AT ALL.

Listened to it again thinking Around the World in a Day. I will say this...in the mix there are a lot of stings and world music whistles going on. That aspect is a bit Prince 1985ish. They are buried deeper than the main synth line and drums (which feature 80's clap sound).

.

It's a crappy disco-house tune like the rubbish George Michael started to put out at a certain point. Same shite as "Sleep Around".

I've only listened three times. It's not the worst thing I've heard ever--not by a long shot. Some things are okay--some might be better than that. I'm not done deciding. But part of the problem is that we're comparing it to everything Prince has done, and actually caring one way or the other. That leads to exaggerated responses. We're not just looking at it as "another album out of the 20 I've already reviewed this week"--and many of us are treating it as a "big release" rather than "this side-thing he's streaming on one site". It's not Prince's next album, it's not being sold as a major statement (well, it's not yet being sold at all, but you understand)--it's this thing that even their own promotional efforts are saying is for the diehards who are interested in everything. So, when outside reviewers find some pleasing stuff on it--it gets a decent review. And that's fine.

Can people actually notcompare 'artwork' by someone when they have 10+ years of arwork?

I've tried to do it, and I don't think I can. Even limiting it within 'artwork' of the last say 5 yrs.

these were my initial impressions...until i realized its part of the aging/maturing process to feel this way...if P wanna let his pants sag, and make pop beats and get a mohawk haircut, thats his well earned choice...ill just listen to Parade and Slaughterhouse and wish him success with this new stuff...still not impressed with Joshua Welton though...but maybe this will help him get some work with Beyonce or Trey Songs or Justin Bieber which is more his speed and sound...so he can leave Minnesota for good

Wanna read mixed reviews? Look up initial reviews for his albums released from 1985 onwards. Go to Prince in print. Post 1984, he usually has mixed reviews. Whatever. - Here is the first few lines of one, I shit you not: - "New Musical Express April 12, 1986 Sometimes it pisses down in April I TOOK 'Kiss' as a signal that we were being ushered back into the compressed, airtight funkworld of 'Dirty Mind'. Didn't flip over the song itself - slick metronome sexgospel - but what a relief to hear that funky, flecked, flicking guitar again. It turns out we're not going back to that springy, spunky sound after all - 'Kiss' is on its own as a throwback to 'Head' and 'Party Up' and 'Do It All Night'. Not that Prince doesn't still have a filthy little mind, of course, just that these days he doesn't speak it quite so economically. It's all mixed he doesn't really know how to express, and that's become a drag." [Edited 9/8/15 19:00pm]

And it went on to be their Album of the Year when they did the Top 50 albums of the year that December.

Go figure.

Prince will never have commerical success again as he doesnt play the game

It doesnt matter how commerical it will sound if you dont get a label promoting the shit out of it and a video and a marketing plan it will fail in the eyes of commerciality and the public

Simple really

At least we are getting good input now.

I am sure FallinLove2Nite and the Rita Ora song would be a chart topping hit if promoted properly

metacritic has it at 70, about the same as AOA, Ans once again it is The LA Times that skews the results higher with another 100. Anybody remember when the LA Times had real music critics like Robert Hillburn ( he had the review that Prince burned on Arsenio)

No way would Hillburn give such a crappy record a 100. lol

WE can't. People for whom Prince and his work are not really important and who haven't listened to several hours of it every week for years--yes, they can. It makes what they say about it quite a bit less interesting to me than the more thoughtful comments that people who have paid attention can make--

Except for the AV review, the album is getting decent reviews so far. The NY Times liked it, USA Today liked it. Jon Bream somewhat likes it.

See, this is why Prince fans confuse me. The best song on the disk is FallInLove and you all hate that. Bream said it sounded like an outtake from ATWIAD, I agree. It is a really great song. I am somewhat liking many of the cuts, but still not liking the whole electrobeat stuff.

It's not up to his standards but the amazing new tune also on Tidal may change that.

Critics are really digging 1000 Hugs, I guess not knowing that the Nona Gaye version is muchhhh better. Ah, those horns.

^ a little strange,

the danish reviewer Mads Hendrich does not seem to be familiar with the intro to the "1999"-album... haha, pretty weird he seems to think this intro "don't worry I won't..." is new.

Oh well, everyone can't be perfect, right? lol

In Scandinavia we throw the dice wink

Often they rate albums, movies, books with the picture of one side of the dice. 6 being the best. 1 being the worst possible.
