It may shock all of you, but the album is getting good reviews.

Except for the AV review, the album is getting decent reviews so far. The NY Times liked it, USA Today liked it. Jon Bream somewhat likes it.

See, this is why Prince fans confuse me. The best song on the disk is FallInLove and you all hate that. Bream said it sounded like an outtake from ATWIAD, I agree. It is a really great song. I am somewhat liking many of the cuts, but still not liking the whole electrobeat stuff.

It's not up to his standards but the amazing new tune also on Tidal may change that.

Critics are really digging 1000 Hugs, I guess not knowing that the Nona Gaye version is muchhhh better. Ah, those horns.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

EXACTLY. Its a good commercially viable record. Prince flat out made a commercial record and the masses will find something fun and danceable they can bump in their car --- till phase 2 comes out smile

he's figured out a tenable entry into the mainstream again - now he just needs to experiment more on his own and restrain joshs overzealous button pushing smile

Critics give people like Macklemore and Pitbull and Kid Cudi good reviews too...

there's other factors at work in some of these reviews, than just the music

Or more likely, there are other sounds that people like out there that are not Super-Important-Musical -Statements.

As I mentionned on the main review thread, the French reviews are quite positive as well.

Many people at the Org think like Museum Curators: they discuss the legacy, they worship gems only the initiated know, many already had X Face, everyone is overfamiliar with FallingInLoveTonite, we talk like the whole world was aware of that D'Angelo/Prince "rivalry".

We may know our Prince but in the case of HitNRun, that may actually stand in the way of a good dancey time.

The NY Times did not give a good review, at all.

It wasn't glowing that's for sure but it was nowhere near the hysterical revulsion displayed on the Org yesterday.

I've only listened three times. It's not the worst thing I've heard ever--not by a long shot. Some things are okay--some might be better than that. I'm not done deciding. But part of the problem is that we're comparing it to everything Prince has done, and actually caring one way or the other. That leads to exaggerated responses. We're not just looking at it as "another album out of the 20 I've already reviewed this week"--and many of us are treating it as a "big release" rather than "this side-thing he's streaming on one site". It's not Prince's next album, it's not being sold as a major statement (well, it's not yet being sold at all, but you understand)--it's this thing that even their own promotional efforts are saying is for the diehards who are interested in everything. So, when outside reviewers find some pleasing stuff on it--it gets a decent review. And that's fine.

Wanna read mixed reviews? Look up initial reviews for his albums released from 1985 onwards. Go to Prince in print. Post 1984, he usually has mixed reviews. Whatever.

Here is the first few lines of one, I shit you not:

"New Musical Express
April 12, 1986

Sometimes it pisses down in April

I TOOK 'Kiss' as a signal that we were being ushered back into the compressed, airtight funkworld of 'Dirty Mind'. Didn't flip over the song itself - slick metronome sexgospel - but what a relief to hear that funky, flecked, flicking guitar again.

It turns out we're not going back to that springy, spunky sound after all - 'Kiss' is on its own as a throwback to 'Head' and 'Party Up' and 'Do It All Night'. Not that Prince doesn't still have a filthy little mind, of course, just that these days he doesn't speak it quite so economically. It's all mixed he doesn't really know how to express, and that's become a drag."

I remember that one and the ATWIAD review from either NME or Melody Maker was just as brutal. SOTT got lip from Nelson George, a famous Orince supporter. Lovesexy got lots of so so reviews too, it was seen as a little pretentious.

Fallinlove an outtake from ATWIAD? That doesn't even make sense. That's like saying it sounds like an outtake from Sgt Pepper's or the last Dylan album

I can see how some people like it, including critics. And I can't say "oh but critics like all kinds of garbage" dismissively when I've pointed to the Metacritic score for Black Messiah many times here on the Org. Oh well. HITNRUN just isn't my cup of tea. But clearly it hits the mark for many people.

Yea I read that, too, and was especially surprised that it came from such a knowledgable long-time fan like Jon. I don't hear it at all. Like AT ALL.

And that's just the thing with being Prince fans. There is so many facets of Prince's music that appeals to an even wider variety of taste. The silly thing is when people declare themselves THE EXPERT in what is "good" and "bad" in terms of his music. I feel like that happens more here at the org these days than it used to.

Listened to it again thinking Around the World in a Day. I will say this...in the mix there are a lot of stings and world music whistles going on. That aspect is a bit Prince 1985ish. They are buried deeper than the main synth line and drums (which feature 80's clap sound). Lastly, I think I prefer the Zooey version because she is cute and it reminds me of the sweetness of the New Girl episode.
