Planet Earth has Somewhere Here on Earth. What does AOA have that is not at least a tiny bitty cheesy? Somewhere Here on Earth is superbly produced. What on AOA is at least slight well produced and not amatuerish?
Thats's where it's at for me. PE has at least one supereb track, vocals, writing, production. AOA? It's not even pleasant to listen to with it all it's tinny and thin and high pitched sounds and sloppily put togther production.

Severak of these rankings could be argued. As I see it, on the strength of his 80's work and pockets of his work thereafter, Prince is ranked about right.
(Given MANY of the names on this list, I'm really surprised Sting was left off.) Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I don't judge an ALBUM based on ONE track... Yes Somwehere Here on Earth is a good song. Great, superb? Naw, I reserve that word for songs like Joy n Repetition and Anna Stesia.
Overall as an album AOA flows much better, not great, not bad, but at least it flows... Planet Earth is just dreadful as a whole ALBUM. |

From what I scanned, it's pretty decent. Paul McCartney is way too high. I'd bump him back to #10 and move Stevie Wonder up to #5 or so. And, yeah, I think Sting should be on there. Prince is probably in about the right slot, based on his 80s work and a few gems before and after. [Edited 8/13/15 16:28pm]"Love & honesty, peace & harmony" |

You're right, it's certainly not a BAD list, and I'd say 80-90% of the picks are defensible, but my issue would be where many picks fall. Your argument about McCartney is fair, and there are many more to make. Could you REALLY list Kanye or Jay-Z ABOVE Ashford and Simpson? Taylor Swift on the list and Sting not? Et cetera.

Lists are always generational in some way. Every young generation thinks their generation is in the center. Not only that, they know their demographic and pander to it at least a little bit. But I agree with you. |

Couldn't agree more. With time comes perspective; 20 years ago Prince would have been in my top 3, now I think 18 is about right.
I know RS has a tough job with generational balance, and the different styles of small-r rock music.

Dylan, Lennon and McCartney in the top 3? Never seen that before! It's not like they're ALWAYS the top 3 or anything. |

Yeah, just like a "best guitar player" list. Guess who's always # 1 there... Although Mojo magazine once put Steve Cropper at # 2, that was pretty cool. |

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

Taylor Swift makes the top 100 but Frank Zappa doesn't get the barest mention.
You can't make this shit up unless you're Rolling Stone. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

Zappa made a lot of instrumental music, so I wouldn't put him in a best songwriter list. Best musician, yes. |

Yeah, Bob Dylan being #1 is correct, though obvious... however...
Rolling Stone being a laughably worhtless vessel-of-dreck is continued in this list.
See: Taylor Swift being ON the list, as if simply FINISHING a song is enough to qualify for the top 100 songWRITERS of all time.
Also see: Kanye West is above Sam Cooke. SAM. COOKE.
Kanye West makes Taylor Swift look like a songwriter who deserves to be on the top 100 list.
I didn't really bother looking at anything after that, other than the top 3. |

He did some 70 albums, probably around 50 of which are original compositions and most of those are songs not instrumentals.
If RS are gonna put taylor swift in the list then you've got to include anyone better than her on there, meaning a list of people that would circle the globe many times over, and even a superhero would get bored of the effort required to do that.
