Zappa made a lot of instrumental music, so I wouldn't put him in a best songwriter list. Best musician, yes.

He did some 70 albums, probably around 50 of which are original compositions and most of those are songs not instrumentals.

If RS are gonna put taylor swift in the list then you've got to include anyone better than her on there, meaning a list of people that would circle the globe many times over, and even a superhero would get bored of the effort required to do that.

I think they put Taylor in there because at the last moment they thought, no we can't just have old men in here! People will call us old and sexist, so let's put a young lady on the list!
As for Zappa, I still think he regarded himself as a composer rather than a songwriter.

Yup they stuck taylor on there to show they're hip and trendy to the young. Sells more copies.

Planet Earth has Somewhere Here on Earth. What does AOA have that is not at least a tiny bitty cheesy? Somewhere Here on Earth is superbly produced. What on AOA is at least slight well produced and not amatuerish?

Thats's where it's at for me. PE has at least one supereb track, vocals, writing, production. AOA? It's not even pleasant to listen to with it all it's tinny and thin and high pitched sounds and sloppily put togther production.

I am a harsh critic of Princes recent work but I think AOA is strong. The fact you repeatedly say it sucks is your opinion not a fact. By the was SHOE is a fantastic song on an album that absolutely bites balls

Pretty good list. Nice to see Bob Marley rated so well. Dylan will always be #1. There is no one better when it comes to songwriting.

any list that says that prince is a better songwriter than sly stone, james brown and norman whitfeild is straight garbage.

It is only garbage because they have Michael Jackson higher than David Bowie, Norman Whitefield, Willie Dixon, Tom Petty.

Prince is in the right ballpark. he could be a little higher. The Bee Gees should be a lot higher. Whoever wrote the blurbs in the list clearly doesn't know much about them. America didn't discover the Bee Gees in 1977, they had had hits for a decade before that. The Bee Gees did have the best single year of any singers or songwriters in history the following year, though, when they wrote 5 of the top 8 songs of the year (numbers 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8), had 3 more songs in the top 19 of the year. They also later wrote the biggest songs of their career for artists as diverse as Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers, and Barbara Streisand.

The problem is not where Prince is ranked, which is about right, the problem is where the others you mentioned are ranked, which is inexcusably low.

i would have prince in the top 5...not many artists have written more great songs than prince...dylan deserves to be in there as well but i wouldnt have him as number one...he may write great lyrics but melody wise...he isnt a match for lennon...mccartney..brian wilson....i would have wilson in the top ten as well....bowie should be higher..

I have nothing against Michael J , he should be higher up the list too , but bowie should in the top ten at least. Maybe you should ask what the other poster has against Prince.

Some of Claptons biggest hits were covers. I Shot the Sheriff, After Midnight... But you don't need to worry about him, he will surely end up in Best Guitarist top ten.

And Sting? Plant/Page?

This list is utter rubbish, as is most of what's printed by Rolling Stone.

I do get the feeling they're a bit biased towards Americans. You can't overlook John & Paul or Mick & Keith but al the guys you mention are English... hmmm

They're biased against anyone who isn't Bob Dylan, a part of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, or any 1960s-1970s rock n' roll act.

I might get hate for this but, despite the fact that I have an enormous respect for James Brown as a singer/dancer/innovator/etcetc, I never really thought he was all that as a songwriter. I'd love to be proved wrong.

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

You're not gonna get any hate from me! I'm a fan, but "get up get on up" isn't going to get you into a list of best songwriters. But that only proves that you don't need a lot of words to get your message across.
