SPECULATING TO DEATH

So Prince wants to keep us guessing.

He and Tidal issue a press release saying the new record will be a Tidal exclusive.

We lose our shit, damn it no way we're joining Tidal. Is he for real?

A day or two later, Prince mentions there will be physical release.

Half the Org doesn't believe him, didn't some reports say that the new album will "live at Tidal for (number of years)"?

We continue -- no way we're joining Tidal, Torrent here I come.

Prince's twitter says "hang on to your hats" or something like that -- there are phases dear!

Oh and what's wrong between Prince and WBR. We continue -- for sure Prince and his label must be at each other's throat. Licensing info initially says (on iTune) that Hardrocklover is licensed from NPG.

OMG, he's going the independent route!!! This smells bad, real bad... what hhappened to his WBR agreement?

Oh wait! On Tidal, tracks appear to be licensed from WBR.

Now the latest rumor is that there will be a WBR physical release in October. (unconfirmed)

Average Orger: Does that mean I don't really have to join Tidal? Could it be the exclusive is only for streaming? Did I recall Prince saying there will be a physical release? Hardly at all, was too upset about that "Tidal exclusive" to believe it.

Say what you will, Prince gets us talking, he keeps us guessing. We can lose our shit from day to day -- or wait to see if there's more.

Never a dull day.

How do you manage your expectations?

I wait and see, keep my fingers crossed, try not to be fatalistic. It's healthy.

Don't undervalue yourself, I read everybody from Militant to Oldfriend to KCool and everyone. Not really interested in BVH's perspective, it's going to be same old, same old.

The funny thing is that Prince has been doing this for so many years and everybody still falls for it. He announces (x) and the fanbase starts running around like a bunch of headless chickens.

He enjoys the randomness of it. He enjoys riling everybody up. He wants us speculating. He wants the lovers to love and the haters to hate.

It's like clockwork. Sure, he COULD just release an album, on a label, major or indie, have it available in record stores and digital outlets at the same time, with pre-orders, a nice website that works properly, and with a new music video ready to go, and some TV appearances............................................but where's the fun in that? That's the same shit everybody does.

Love or hate the idea, the Tidal deal has generated so much discussion that we had to close the first thread and make a second one. Prince doesn't care if you join Tidal or not. He knows damn well everyone will hear the album one way or another anyway. Did it stop anyone from hearing The Black Album when he had the album units physically destroyed? Nope. And that was BEFORE digital music.

I'm with you, Aero. I wait and see.

You show WAY too much respect for P.

Had you said this 20-30 years ago, when he was relevant AND his music was worthwhile waiting for, then I would've agreed 100%.

Now it's just boring and embarrassing.

Very few are eager for another R&B album with Jay-Z.

I for one, can wait without a problem.

Mind you, had the announcement been of a boxset of remasters and unreleased material for this Christmas, I would be counting the days!!! razz

WHAT expectations ?

I honestly have zero expectations from this guy anymore.. & I'm never disappointed

If anything comes out and its better than Purple and Gold, thats a win.
Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Dod you remember the movie/TV series "M*A*S*H"? It was taken from a book written by Richard Hooker. hHe ended up writing a series of books on the adventures of Hawkeye and Trapper John after the Korean War.

Their nemesis in some of the books was a doctor they called "Goofus MacDuff". Goofus MacDuff was legendary because he could take all the data on a patient, summarize it brilliantly, and then make the exact wrong recommendation for treatment. Whenever Hawkeye was stumped, he'd have Goofus MacDuff analyze the situation and make a recommendation. Then Hawkeye would do the exact opposite of Goofus MacDuff's recommendation and, of course, that always worked.

I can't help but think of Goofus MacDuff whenever I read BVH's posts.

I don't mind Prince getting everyone talking and generating buzz. A lot of artists do things to get their fans speculating and talking. A lot of companies do the same. Apple is famous for being tight lipped about upcoming products--the buzz generated is unmatched by any other tech company.

However, what I dislike is when Prince eludes to things that will exist or be in his offerings, which fans pay for, but he never delivers. For example, $77 is a lot of money to pay for a t-shirt (Which many did not receive), and a $11 CD set that one could have just bought at Target. Many fans were excited when press releases spoke of things like Prince having recorded every live performance he's every done, and the jazz collaborations that took place at his studio, etc. The 'buzz' generated by the NPG camp was that lotusfailure.com was going to be far more substantial than it actually was. Remember, some people signed up for Lotusfailure.com expecting that the utterances during the releases would actually be true, only to be dissapointed, and double-charged one year later after the website had long since lay dormant and neglected. The interview with the website creator about how Prince ignored their plees for material to place on the site, the fact that Prince never issued a personal apology to upset fans who the ensuing fiasco one year later, and the fact Prince's overall dismissal of the "internet' after this seemingly large effort doesn't just bring ot light how fickle and unpredictable Prince is--it also shows how awful a buisness person he is, and how little he cares for his fans.

Yeah, I remember. I remember Crystal Ball too. I recall NPGMC -- but also, way way back, the horror of sitting through both UTCM and Graffiti Bridge. And Arms of Orion, let's not forget Arms of Orion.

I hated Planet Earth except a song here and there, liked maybe two songs on MPLSound, 20TEN was a little better, but not much. I wasn't on the Org much for a couple of years.

I also hate any movie Bob Dylan was in --and almost every movie about Bob Dylan. David Bowie really let me down as well, what was it again something about jeans or Absolute Beginners -- very disappointed.

Well Prince reeled me back in with some of the early 3EG songs, disappointed me with Plectrum Electrum yet surprised me with AOA.

In other words I got over my disappointments when I heard something I found worthy. It's important to know if you're going to get over something or not. Everyone is entitled to say enough is enough. I chose to get over it.

Hardrocklover sounds pretty good to me. I'm going to pay between 10 and 20 $ to hear Prince's next album, I'm still curious about what he can do, it's so simple.

If I'm bored by the music again, I'll probably check out the next album just to see, most likely just catch a single. It's easy, no one's pointing a gun at my head. And if I'm disappointed, well I'll say so then leave you all to tear it apart if that floats your respective boats -- it's not my thing to let myself sink into a swamp of bitterness, there are other issues in life that are worth protesting much more than unsatisfying output from a songwriter.

I'm just excited for a new album. I've stopped posting about the new album because I got tired of discussing it. I don't mind speculation, but it gets boring.

I'm sure at minimum there will be a song or two I love. At best I'll have another Prince album I really like, just like AOA.

You nailed it....Gemini mind tricks, lol

I haven't fallen for most of Prince's hype because I can usually smell it a mile away. I never joined Lotusflowr for that reason. I didn't join NPGMC till the membership was reduced to 25 bucks. I didn't get caught up in Chrystal Ball, 1800newfunk, etc.

For several years when Prince wasn't doing something that interested me I mostly ignored him and didn't start following him closely again until the Musicology tour. The only thing I regret missing is the celebrations at Paisley. Other than that I have everything everybody else has.

Watching everybody run around in a panic with their hair on fire is entertaining though. Prince probably feels the same way when he's playing folks like a fiddle. lol

like someone posted above, some of you guys think FAR too highly of prince. He's just a dude. Not everything he does has to be the right thing.

the narrative from the pro-prince camp is exactly as predictable as bart's posts. There's always a way to put a positive spin on anything prince does. For some reason some fans need prince to save face at all costs, just like bart needs prince to lose face.

Here's a story i've read before: Prince does or says something that a lot of people think is dumb. Enough people complain, more people than just the usual critics, so the sentiment can't be brushed away so easily. When this happens, the story from the pro-prince camp is that prince is just generating buzz (and look at how great he is at it!) or he's just having fun, or something.

But who cares if he generates buzz? Who cares if he's good at it or not? Who cares if this was his intention all along? Only the people who need to justify prince's actions, or need to rail against him, give a shit about that. My guess is that most fans just want to buy an album easily without any surrounding bullshit.

Never a dull day.

How do you manage your expectations?

I wait and see, keep my fingers crossed, try not to be fatalistic. It's healthy.

.

I don't try to manage my expectations; I try to release them. He's broken enough of his own rules in the past that I've been long practiced at letting go of many of my previously held expectations about his music and career. I do, however, hold fast to knowledge of his patterns. That way I stay fairly oriented when he changes his mind.
.
The nice things about giving up expectations with an artist like him is that it leaves the door wide open for dynamic movement and occasional surprises with his career moves. Some fans no doubt feel frustrated by this but I enjoy it quite a bit that he makes certain choices in such atypical fashion and that he still operates with a degree of unpredictability. It's a roller coaster ride.
.
That said, I do hope there is a physical release as I don't want to have to sign up with Tidal.
