James Brown was a songwriter? Kate bush is that great? haven't listened to her, i have to.

And, what makes a great songwriter, i'm very easy to please so a song like To Ramona from Bob Dylan, for me it means great compisition.

As for Kate, Hounds of Love is her greatest album. The Kick Inside and Never For Ever are also good. The Red Shoes has Prince on it, so that makes it interesting. If you like those, then you can move on the rest. Not saying the other albums are bad, just saying these are the best albums to begin with. Cheers! cool

Kate Bush has more songwriting talent in her belly button fluff than Taylor Swift will ever possess, but of course I know she isn't recognised in the states so fair enough.

Any songwriters list that doesn't include Richard Thompson is automatically suspect.

I might get hate for this but, despite the fact that I have an enormous respect for James Brown as a singer/dancer/innovator/etcetc, I never really thought he was all that as a songwriter. I'd love to be proved wrong.

His music is funky as hell but riff based and for me there aren't enough hooks in the songs to justify their length. That's probably what you mean.

You're not gonna get any hate from me! I'm a fan, but "get up get on up" isn't going to get you into a list of best songwriters. But that only proves that you don't need a lot of words to get your message across.

Lyrics in music are so meh. Unless they're exceptional I try my best to ignore them. if you want really good poetry go read a book.

'Pony St.' and 'The Other Side of Summer' are a couple of my current favorite EC tunes (but there are so many more). Check them out if you're interested.

I don't like Queen, so Freddy Mercury on top is a bit dubious, but I have to admit they wrote some good tunes. La Bush on # 4, that's good! And even the great Bob himself named Townes Van Zandt as one of his favorite songwriters.

Severak of these rankings could be argued. As I see it, on the strength of his 80's work and pockets of his work thereafter, Prince is ranked about right.

(Given MANY of the names on this list, I'm really surprised Sting was left off.)

From what I scanned, it's pretty decent. Paul McCartney is way too high. I'd bump him back to #10 and move Stevie Wonder up to #5 or so. And, yeah, I think Sting should be on there. Prince is probably in about the right slot, based on his 80s work and a few gems before and after. [Edited 8/13/15 16:28pm]

McCartney is too high?! Man...agree to disagree. The man wrote 'Elanor Rigby', 'Here There & Everywhere', and 'For No One'. And that's all before 1967. His work on side 2 of Abbey Road is absolutely stunning. Fast forward to the 90's, and I'll put Flaming Pie up against pretty much any album from any one of his peers. Truly the greatest melody writer this side of Gershwin.
