Prince Needs to Bring Back Musicology Tour Band

This was one of his most jaw dropping and successful tours and for good reason. The band was slammin'

Lead vocals & guitar - Prince
Bass - Rhonda Smith
Drums - John Blackwell
Keyboards - Renato Neto and Rad
Saxophones - Mace Parker and Candy Dulfer
Trombone - Greg Boyer
Keys- Chance Howard

It was just an amazing crew of awesome musicians. I know he's burned bridges with probably most of them but this is the kind of band that really helps bring out the genius of Prince LIVE!

Plus I would take Prince on acoustic guitar over the played out and stale sampler set any day!
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

nah. the band was a powerhouse but lacked personality. there's a difference between technically great and being great with "soul". renato and his synths are a snoozfest. i say bring back sonny t and michael b and doctor fink if anything. sprinkle some wendy and lisa and eric leeds on it too

3rdEyeGirl may not be the greatest band he ever had, but it's his current band, like it or not. Face it, accept it, deal with it. Next!

He had a lot of work those nights and I thought he, Prince, Rhonda and John Blackwell sounded good together.

A few weeks ago I was listening to a soundboard recording of one of the Hit 'n Run shows he did earlier this year....that shit was really bad. First sb recording I skipped through just once. I doubt I'll give it a second spin anytime soon. Hannah ruined all the funky songs. That girl's gotta go. This band really needs a kick ass keyboard player and a funky sax player. We don't need 10 mediocre horns. They're just taking up space on stage. Oh Prince should stop being lazy and play more guitar. That's all. wink

The Musicology band was tight.....that's all I care about. This or that "personality" doesn't mean anything to me.

I loved the musicology era band....so so tight AND they can handle EVERYTHING...I like the band to not invade on my enjoyment of Prince. I enjoy when they are given their time to shine but really appreciate it when I don't notice them as well ----

Extremely tight, world class musicians who can play anything from his back catalogue. That's what the Musicology band was to me. 3rdEyeGirl bring nothing to the table but limitations in my opinion.

well, something needs to change, that is for d*mn sure.. but please not the musicology band...

yes, they are talented.. etc... but there is something just lacking... .maybe its a 'raw' quality..?

its almost like they were too tight.. too rigid....

i think i would do anything to see

Drums: Sheila E

Vocals: Jill Jones

Vocals: Margie Cox

Guitar: Dez

Bass: Sonny T

Keyboards: Dr Fink

Keyboards 2: Morris Hayes

Horns; NONE! unless its atlanta bliss and eric leeds

3rdEyeGirl is enjoyable to see live, but they lack something on the bootlegs I've listened to. I've seen them twice (once in 2013, once in 2015) and both shows were really cool in the moment but I couldn't finish them when listening to the bootlegs.

Yeah, because Prince is such a fan of living in the past.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

He brought half of them back for the 2009 Montreux shows.

And that would be enough for me. If Prince could strip more of his compositions down to just a piano/ synth, bass, drums and him on guitar for most of the songs, that would be rad!

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

I'm just sick of him having to shoehorn his catalogue into a rock outfit. His music doesn't shine in a 2 guitar, bass and drums band. A large part of what I like so much about P is his sound. His best rock songs are still distinctly Prince in style and instrumentation - Computer Blue, Let's Go Crazy etc. If I wanted to listen to a standard guitar band, Prince wouldn't be it.
