He played the whole new album at the White House?! Wonder what Obama thought. Agree--I'd like to hear Prince tear up Hardrocklover. More passion. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Great to hear you guys again. Nice report /review. Hopfully the new album will be out in a few weeks for you to review. Thought you were a little harsh on Baltimore. It does grow on you the more you play it. Spot on about What If though.

LOL maybe that explains it all, Prince obviously had it mastered with Skype Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

missed ya! "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

I agree Baltimore is a strong song. In regards to it not having any angst or confrontation and it, I am glad Prince took that route. Trust me I love Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine, hell any agressive, revolutionary political music I am behind it. But at that time in America African-Americans (I am one myself) were extremely pissed off, disillusioned and full of disdain for the government that was supposed to be protecting us. I, myself was full of rage because these events keep happening. I'm glad Prince told a more hopeful stance. He channelled Martin Luther King, Jr. when everyone else was feeling Malcolm X. I love the guitar solo the length of it allows the listener to process their thoughts and realize that we have to choose peace each and every time. The Civil Rights movement in America was successful because of peace. Peaceful protesters were beat up and killed and photographs and videos of those attacks shamed our government into doing the right thing. I think the same thing can happen again. I'm glad Prince did a upbeat, hopeful song instead of an angst driven one because it reminded me that peace and love is the only way. Say YES!

You have just nailed my thoughts on the song. He did write it specifically for Baltimore and the people there, not for the whole of the country or world.Hence the title.

I'd completely forgotten all about 'What If' until now - and completely agree with everything you guys said. Arrogance, condescending, blind faith etc. Yeurgh.

I completely respect the entire Peach & Black Podcast crew. MC, ToeJam, Captain, Playa. All of you all.
And I agree that "What If" isn't the best song. It doesn't have the best lyrics... And does come off a bit arrogant... But as a Christian, I feel I need to speak up for what I believe in... Here's a paraphrase from what at one point y'all was talking about.. "If Jesus came back, why would he just save his followers, and not everyone?" Well, it's much more than that... Basically, he saves his followers because they live their lives by the good book, and of course no one is perfect, but live their lives Godly the best way possible.. And the ones that don't follow Christ and live their lives full of sin can't be saved because they're slaves to the Devil and lived their lives through sin. It might sound "crazy" to some.....like "here we go again.." But according to Christianity, that's just the way it is.. Also, another paraphrase, I think ToeJam said something like this... "The religion is like oh if you just close your eyes and believe then everything will be alright.." That might not be the best paraphrase, but I haven't listened to it in a couple days and don't feel like going through it again. But as I said before, it's more than that.. I respect the heck out of you, ToeJam. You're an awesome musician! I like the intro-music you make on the show. I love "Shoot The Duck" and more recently I checked out you and your bands' "Just In Case". But to be fair, when speaking on public podcasts or anything like this, I understand that you don't believe it. That's fine, you don't have to. But keep in mind that there are Prince-fans that listen to the podcast who are Christians and when you say all of that, it might offend them a little bit. Again, it's good to have your own opinion, but I think saying something like this would be fine, "yeah, I don't really believe in this. Not my style." Then go on to the music. That'd be fine! But bashing Christianity isn't really appropriate nor professional for a public podcast that has listeners from all around the world coming from different cultures. It's a podcast about PRINCE, let it be about him and his music! Like, if you were listening to a podcast, and someone for any reason started talking negatively about your culture, ou wouldn't like that, right? Didn't think so. You'd probably forget about it, never listen to it again and wouldn't make a big deal out of it, but you get my point? I'm not trying to tell you how to podcast or anything. Nor am I looking for an argument.. But I'm just standing up for what I believe in and for any Christian listeners out there. Peace. ^Thanks for the feedback. It is not my intent to offend. But at the same time, I'm not going to censor myself on an issue that I'm passionate about. I stand by my review. Although listening back, I would perhaps tone down my "arrogance" accusation to take into consideration "ignorance" as a less offensive alternative. And there's no crime in being ignorant. . But according to Christianity, that's just the way it is..
. I would simply ask you to consider whether the ways things are for your understanding of "Christianity", are in fact the ways things are in reality. "According to Christianity" is only relevant if Christianity is true - which I don't think it is.

. [Edited 7/29/15 1:23am] Thanks for the response. I sorta understand how you feel and interpret that way about Jesus. It is pretty complicated after all. I think I felt that way at some point too. Glad the Peach & Black Podcast is back! And of course can't wait till Prince's new album comes out! Well it's not really is it since there are countless sects, off-shoots and individual interpretations of what does and does not constitute part of any religion. It's vastly open to interpretation and always has been.

Captain seems to have Prince's ear. A few days after he praised the Stare snippet and said it could be the best thing he'd done for a while it's out in full on Spotify. No whammy bar either

"What If" will never equal the urgency, intensity, and open inclusive invitation of a song like "The Cross," and how Prince performed it during the LoveSexy tour in Nagoya, Japan in 1989. Those are the kind of songs Prince needs to write and perform if he wants to get a spiritual message across. Good podcast as always dudes! Can't believe how much you all liked What If though, even lyrics aside that song is just commercial rock FM dot com . I much prefer the X's Face, unfinished as it sounds, bit of edge to it... [Edited 8/8/15 1:01am]
