Lovesexy was victim of horrid single selection. Alphabet St should have been followed by Lovesexy as a single and then Glam Slam. I think that is why people didn't buy it.
It was not a very radio friendly album plus as shallow as it seems now, the cover was a big issue.
I remember when it came out, I thought to myself; "Which radio station is going to play I Wish U Heaven?" It just dodn't fit the formats of the stations at that time (here in NY were knee-deep in Freestyle at the time).

In Holland, Alphabet Street hit the top 10 and both Glam Slam and I Wish U Heaven reached the top 20. As for the cover, most people were like, is this it? This is what all the fuss is about? |

When Lovesexy came out I was only 10 but already a huge Prince fan. I wanted to skip school that day to go buy the album but my Mom told me No. However, she told me she would pick it up for me. When she went to the record store to get it appearantly they didn't have it on cassette, they only had it on vinyl so she purchased the record for me. The way she tells the story, she had to trunge back through the mall with the LP (in a transparent plastic bag), with a big naked picture of Prince on the front, while people gave her awkward looks. She said she had never been so embarrased in her life. She's never let me live it down. If a man is considered guilty

Congrats on becoming a new Prince "superfan." It's a special moment when that something clicks and you realize his genius -- and then begin eagerly absorbing his catalog song-by-song. I was a casual Prince/Purple Rain fan in '84 like most, but then initially thought SOTT was horrible when it came out. Almost laughably bad. But after a couple of more listens to SOTT I woke the eff up. Big time. That's when I began my Prince journey from For You on.
So when Lovesexy came out I truly appreciated it and couldn't get enough. Anna Stesia is one of his best works. And of course the Lovesexy cover didn't disappoint, living up to Prince's "controversy" reputation. "The password is what." |

Lovesexy to For you , what a journey for you , wish i could do that journey for the first time again. Your now entering the fantastic experience
So far I've been spending a week with each album before moving on (or moving back, if you like) but Lovesexy just seems to have a lot more to it than say, Batman or Diamonds and Pearls. It could be a two weeker .
Are you including the Bsides/Long versions as well? |

the whole Lovesexy album is a musical trip.. just so brilliant
I just love the complex production with layers and layers and with those screaming guitars.
And this album.. Lovesexy.. was huge success in Europe, I wonder why in heaven the americans refused to buy it.
What a fantastic trip, such a fine album..
imagine all that with a remastered version... |

There's a lot to discover here. This song basically tells the story of why he abandoned the Black Album.
How so? |
