At the time here on the Org, lots of fans were awed, the usual suspects said he was showboating, that Petty was annoyed, etc., etc. same old same old. Prince would walk on water they'd say he was only doing it for cash and stole the idea from Jesus lol. |

Prince took it higher and then brought it home. I expected nothing less. I loved it and everyone looked happy to me. What? |

And Tom Petty's LDWMJ is one of my favorite videos of all time. Just saying. Lol. What? |

I think Petty did think he was showboating which he clearly was, this is prince we're talking about. |

I have watched this performance many times and I've come to the conclusion that the most impressive part is when Prince yanks his guitar over his head and throws it into the crowd - without the strap coming anywhere near his hat.
Now, you might think I'm joking but really I'm not. Put on a brimmed hat like Prince's sometime and try to get a guitar off your head without knocking your hat off.
On a more serious note, the differences in expression between Tom Petty and Dhani Harrison are priceless. I love Dhani's glee! |

I can't imagine Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne or Dhani Harrison expecting anything else from Prince other than a complete over-the-top performance. It was all planned and rehearsed, so I don't understand why people say that Petty was annoyed. Maybe didn't know how to play off Prince's stage antics, which would be understandable. The look on Dhani Harrison's face is priceless -- it's been noted that he's a huge admirer of Prince's work.
.
People seem to want to incite trouble or point out problems where there are none. |

Prince handling his guitar has always been part of his cool .. I used to love the look and way he hung his guitar behind him while singing lgc ... In fact the cool of that "look" has outlasted the cool of that song ... And petty is among the greats ... I can't imagine petty not completely digging prince in that moment |

Prince killed it. This is my second favorite guitar solo played by him -- the first would be his 1990 version of "Bambi" from the Nude Tour in Tokyo. I can listen to that one over and over again Maybe do, just not like did before |

This being the Org, you had quite a few people who, instead of being proud Prince clearly nailed that solo, said things like:
- OMG Prince is such a showboat, that was completely inappropriate and tacky.
- OMG did you see Prince just leave the stage like he was all that? What a pompous prick.
- OMG you can tell Petty is so annoyed Prince had to make this tribute all about himself.
Not sure who said Prince would get criticized on the Org if he cured cancer but there's definitely some truth to that. Maybe "OMG Prince is curing cancer now and yet we still don't have that album he said was coming this summer/winter/fall/spring. What a douche."

Yes, it was very nice AND it''s another entry into the 'what lies did Prince tell'-thread, as he claimed he'd never heard the song beofre asking to perform on it.

I believe him. Is it so hard for a guitar GOD to just listen on the spot and strum along (that's what he looked like he was doing to me) until his turn to do his thing? I say no. What? |

Here's what else I see. Prince is getting the go ahead to keep playing from somebody, Tom I guess. A couple times he looks and smiles over to his right, and then keeps going! Nobody tells him to stop. They all love it. Tom starts feeling it in his bones, you call that dancing. What? |

This is a jaw dropping performance by anyone's standard.
If you've never heard the Beatles version go and listen to it now. The guitar solo in the original is there but also kind of isn't there. It's just a few notes... Prince hit's all of them. There is no way on earth Prince hadn't heard the original. This solo was worked on, it's built organically from the original, and designed to showcase his flashy playing style - because it's mesmerizing.

I wouldn't bet on it. If he says he never heard it before then I'll take his word for it. I would take Tom Petty's word as well if he says he was bothered by Prince. But until then. What? |

I recall reading that he'd been sent the song a couple of weeks earlier and that was the first time he'd heard it. It's not like he just turned up and plugged in. |

LOL seriously, that happened? You would think that people would just care that we got some masterful guitar playing, more casual fans getting into Prince, and more importantly, a smile being brought on Dhani Harrison's face who just lost his father. |

This was a great observation you made. I could have watched this video a hundred times and not picked up on how deftly he got that guitar strap over the brim of his hat without knocking it off. That detail alone speaks to Prince's commitment to putting on a performance, not just playing the #*(& out of that solo, but making it a real show for the audience. He must work quite hard to create his onstage image/persona. He made it look so easy, but I wonder how many times he practiced that guitar throw before he was confident enough to do it at the RRHOF show in front of a worldwide audience. |

Whatever he said he did is what I believe he did and he doesn't belong on the "What lies did Prince tell?" thread for saying it. If I recall, it was said Prince had never heard the tune or couldn't recall it well enough before he was sent a copy a week before the performance to rehearse. I don't think he himself said this and there's a difference between having heard of the song and being familiar enough with it to play it. It's just one of those statements that was reported on and that was then interpreted and misinterpreted. |

Yes, and there was a note to go along with that: "Dear Prince, because there are no record stores in Minneapolis, and because we know that very few musicians have the Beatles albums in their collection, we hereby send you the song. P.S. Be sure to throw the guitar strap over your hat without touching it at the end, so the people can be in awe, because this special George Harrison performance is all about you. Peace."
