Nah. He should get a whole new crew of talented musicians. People who will challenge him for once.

Or he could hire the Vanguard. Best show I've ever seen.

Yes!!!
And Neto was great on the Montreux shows, he gives Prince's music that extra mature sound I think.

So, yes to this idea.
Or the 2011 band!! cool

The Vanguard Group is an American investment management company based in Malvern, Pennsylvania, are they really better than 3rd breast? razz biggrin

Limitations often spur creativity. Perhaps that's one of P's reasons for committing to a younger team.

well, something needs to change, that is for d*mn sure.. but please not the musicology band...

yes, they are talented.. etc... but there is something just lacking... .maybe its a 'raw' quality..?

its almost like they were too tight.. too rigid....

I agree with this part. I don't like a band that's too slick and polished.

The Musicology tour was far too commercial for my taste, and one of my least favorite tours. The masses might have liked it, but it's the last thing I'd want him to go back to.

I'm just sick of him having to shoehorn his catalogue into a rock outfit. His music doesn't shine in a 2 guitar, bass and drums band. A large part of what I like so much about P is his sound. His best rock songs are still distinctly Prince in style and instrumentation - Computer Blue, Let's Go Crazy etc. If I wanted to listen to a standard guitar band, Prince wouldn't be it.

I actually preferred the band at the beginning when it was stripped-down to just guitars/bass/drums playing rock, but they haven't been that for some time now. Prince added back Josh on keys (and sometimes Cassie, too), horns, and background singers.

Haha, totally agree! I agree Prince needs a band that is on that level, would be much better for him. Musicology band was too polished, 3EG band is too limited.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I was not just talking technical skills. Renato is virtually the only Prince keyboard player to have a dinstinct style of his own. Like it or not, but show respect.

This is so repdictable. Ages ago, people were slating this band terribly. All kinds of names were thrown at them and now people want them back.

Give it another 8 - 10 years and people will want 3rdEyeGirl back if they havent been replaced then.

Even Prince would disagree with that one Databank. Lisa Coleman and Dr Fink stand out uniquely
Even Prince has said things about both them way after they were no longer band members, to their unique styles and playing

Me too
I don't think Prince committed to the direction he wanted to go.
If he committed to that stripped down back to basic rock direction, then he would not have felt the need to add all that other stuff. Adding Cassandra for piano or keyboard would have been ok, especially since she is female. But adding Josh now makes no sense for the 'all female' band.
And the AOA album didn't speak to the direction we thought he initially was going in.
He could have easily committed to the 1 album Prince and band straight out rocked album and see where it goes. He had nothing else to prove by putting out an attempted commercial album with a bunch of guests. Nor a 3rd Eye Girl focused album. They won't have a legacy like his earlier 1977-1989 bands

IDK if it's very reasonable to assume that Prince values Funk and Lisa more than Renato as musicians: he consistantly talked about the Revolution's limitations when asked about a possible revival.

Personally I don't think I could recognize Fink if he played on another artist's song, one could say his sound was distinctive in 1980 but ever since, anyone playing Mplsound kind of keys sounds just like that.

Lisa maybe I would, depending of what she does, but unlikely in the sense that I don't even recognize her keys playing on W&L's albums (but it's damn obvious on The Flesh for example).

On the other hand the other day (before the thread started) I was listening to a Sheila track with Renato and had forgotten he was playing on that and heard the keys and immediately thought "ha ha that's Renato", it was just SO HIM.

However my point wasn't to diss Prince's other keyboard players, and I find the notion of comparing musicians a bit immature as a whole because each has assets and talents of their own, but to highlight the fact that Renato had quite a unique style. I also think the notion that P's 80's musicians were more talented than those who followed is totally biaised. There is a reason why Prince had to rehearse grooves in loops for dozens of hours with his 80's bands: they weren't so "tight" and needed practice (and probably P himself, too). I'm pretty sure later bands jammed a lot, too, but not for the purpose of "practice" anymore.

He didn't constantly talk about it lol

that thing he said a year ago after saying they were fierce and sharp like the knife he was holding, is a man 'holding' people back to over 20 yrs ago like they haven't grown as well.
But Prince jammed to practice too, he himself said he wasn't that good back then
And they jammed back then to get the sounds many jam sessions were fleshing out songs

He was also at a place where he was developing a sound of his own, in the 80s very distinct sounds/music. And back then they were all still new and practicing their craft.

.
Dr Fink continued with Prince into 1990 and would have continued if he didn't get married
Lisa -let go because of emotional reasons (In This Bed I Scream comes 10 years later)
^^
These are things Prince said about Lisa Coleman years later

Lisa was never an explosive keyboard player, but she was a master of color in her harmonies; I could sing off of what she had with straight soul.

etc

The Artist still raves about the original Revolution bassist, Brown Mark (who took over for Andre Simone), calling him the tightest bass player next to Graham himself. -Nov 1999

I remember when Miles Davis came to my house. As he was passing by my piano, he stopped and put his hands down on the keys and played these eight chords, one after the other. It was so beautiful; he sounded like Bill Evans or Lisa [Coleman], who also had this way of playing chords that were so perfect. -1997
in the 1997-1998 years He said a lot about the Revolution members and it was all good. Then wanted to reunited to do the Roadhouse garden album.

.

But I'm not talking about the band, but those two individuals

But I agree, that Prince uses the musicians for what they have to offer.
Prince himself has made comments about other musicians good and bad. Prince has 'dissed' others in the field. Why is it wrong from someone to diss Lisa Renato or Rosie?

He didn't constantly talk about it lol I remember several interviews but maybe I'm tripping.

that thing he said a year ago after saying they were fierce and sharp like the knife he was holding, is a man 'holding' people back to over 20 yrs ago like they haven't grown as well. I agree that it was BS but that's what he said.

He was also at a place where he was developing a sound of his own, in the 80s very distinct sounds/music. And back then they were all still new and practicing their craft. Prince has had many other young musicians ever since but I don't think they needed to practice in that sense. I may be totally wrong, though.

.
Dr Fink continued with Prince into 1990 and would have continued if he didn't get married Fink was replaced by Tommy because he decided to miss the South American shows in order to work on another project, and P chose to keep Tommy after that, not sure how this was related to him getting married but maybe he thought he'd get a better income by working on that studio project?

Why is it wrong to diss people period? How would those disrespectful orgers feel if someone came to the forum and declared they suck at their job, not because they don't do their job properly but only because the person who says it has arbitrarily decided that they do suck at their job? What do those orgers know about music really?

What Prince said about Wendy during the Musicology period:
“She plays acoustic guitar with me better than almost anyone. The opportunity came up and her name was the first to come to mind. I’m looking for things to juice me, too.”
The things Prince has said about these band members are contridictory to him thinking they aren't good enough. Just saying. Prince's whole issue from back then was issues of intimacy with the people in his camp. Fear of poeple leaving (all goes back to family issues which is how he saw them back then) including Sheila E, Miko, Cat...

.

You mean why is it ok to diss people period?
I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it's a part of life.
Prince dissed Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis in 1990 when he said 'they aren't doing the minneapolis sound, that they are only making songs to get hits' it was a big diss to Morris Day on the Love Bizarre video about Oak Tree

.

But I'm more interesting in a critical thinking. Not in just putting people down for the sake of it. But people do/don't like musicians/artists/singers for whatever reason they have.

P dissing his former friends is not the most honourable thing, but it's personal. People dissing high professionals they've never met based on uneducated guesses on the quality of their work is human indeed, but even less cool in my book. Now what about me dissing dissing people? I don't know lol
