Considering I had a b/w version of this picture as a poster when I was in college, and I graduated in '93 (and bought it somewhere around 1990), I'd venture more toward '86...

I used to have that poster too! You have to remember that people that make posters don't necessarily do their research into accurate Prince history...although I think they should, because not doing so makes them look like morons! By the way this version of the photo looks much better than the poster we're talking about, which just showed him on a white background! It's definitely from around 1988/1989. Anyone know where I can get this version of the photo in a poster? Kat:) [This message was edited Tue Mar 25 12:36:27 PST 2003 by purplekat]

Then it seemed they added a dropped shadow to it... Prince looks like a cutout in that picture.

How about add a few more things to his costume and just call it: Edward Scissorhands???

This is definitely right after Lovesexy, so it's probably late '88 to '89. How can anyone think this was something from 1995 or even '86 (the Parade era)?? The hair and clothes are a dead giveaway!!

that's true plus 89 was probably the only time he didn't have a mustache and was photographed(but on rare occasions)like this pic... -------------------------------------------------

This photo is from the last leg of the Lovesexy tour right before he started the Batman era. From early 1989. __________________________________________________

Plus, those saying it must be from some point in the 90's because of the symbol aren't thinking straight. This symbol isn't the exact same symbol he adopted for his name. This one is the one he'd been sporting since '82!! Regardless, GREAT picture!

Is it just me or is anybody else wondering what's running through Prince's head in this shot? It's like he's thinking:
"U. Here. Now. Get 'em off". Dayum, that stare would make anyone weak at the knees [This message was edited Wed Mar 26 7:14:31 PST 2003 by onenitealone]

Gotta throw in my four cents...and I'm not Prince photo expert, but there are few details that date it...
First, yes, like a few mentioned before it IS from 1989. It's the Batman era basically. What details date? Well, one the look, the hardly if even there MUSTACHE. He's almost clean shaven, that similar look from the Arms Of Orion Single, where he looks really cool in a black in white photo, dark eye makeup and no mustache or facial hair. He does have the long hair, it's just pulled back. Then, the clothes, the fashion. The pants are Batman era style. Remember he wore these alot around that time. You can see him wear them in the Batman video. Some fans always say they don't care what he wears, well, it's part of the Prince persona. And it helps if ever you wonder what era a photo or look is from. Prince clothes matter! An interesting thing is the piece of jewelry he's wearing, the O+> chain. That he started wearing after the Batman era...I wonder if that was something he started showing off with this picture for the first time, I wonder... I actually have a rare poster, rather large, where it's a different shot of the same photo session. But without the wierd psychadelic stuff behind him. I think, if my graphic eye leads me correctly, this photo has been MODIFIED. That background wierdness doesn't seem part of the original photo, also there's an obvious Photoshop shadow that's consistent in the background, it's too even behind him. I do think the clothes are originally purple but the photo has been tampered with. Photoshop wasn't that sophisticated in '89. There's indication of Photoshop filters and saturations and stuff. I know, I got a little too into the details, but hey, just pointing out some obvious things as a reference for all ya'lls!

The picture was part of a set that featured in British Vogue in 1990 and was taken by Steven Klein.
