Is Prince The Newest Tidal Co-Owner?

Prince is a legendary rock star, and at this point in his career (at pretty much any point in his career if we’re being honest), he has the freedom to do whatever he wants, including change his mind…and he may even want to get in on the business. The singer-songwriter has been very vocal about his opposition to almost every advancement that pops up in the music industry, from YouTube to iTunes to streaming, keeping much of his catalog off of the various services that have all but taken over the business. Now, after a few very telling actions, it looks like the great Purple One may have finally given his seal of approval to one of the many streaming options. Earlier this week, he took his music off every service that carried any of it and allowed Tidal, the Jay Z-led newcomer to the industry, to stream his work.

I suppose anything is possible. However, Prince licensing his songs to stream on Tidal doesn't make him any more the co-owner of Tidal than selling his songs in the iTunes store makes him a co-owner of Apple. Easy for the well-established to make such moves...
Good for them, as long as they do not build the same sort of construct for others coming-up.

I'm surprised that Prince hasn't started something like Tidal many years ago.Considering how much he complains that artists aren't fairly compensated for their work.Seems like he could have beaten Jay-Z to the punch, many many years ago.

I want some of you to name other artist wha can take their catalog anywhere the want. Not one album not just a song. Partnering up with Tidal is smart move and I sure he getting the money he wanted and deserved. If works out great it is does not he has nothing to lost but cheap ass fans who were not buying anything anyway.

I can't, Prince. Not another sign up fee. I probably wouldn't listen to most of the other 'artists' on Tidal anyway.
I love you, but this type of shit makes people (me) want to download things illegally.

Amy Mann has been doing it for years. And other artists have been doing it too. The difference is that Prince wanst more fans and more money. Also, other artists have retain full rights without sacraficing integrity or pissing off their fans. มีเพียงความว่างเปล่า 只有空虚 Dim ond gwacter 만 공허함이있다 唯一の虚しさがあります There is only the void.

. What nonsense is this? . I want some of you to name other artist wha can take their catalog anywhere the want. . Stones, who've gotten paid REPEATEDLY for doing exactly so. (Note that the Stones knew about ownership of master recording decades before Prince after getting screwed, yet Prince didn't give a rat's arse until he'd signed a contract he later regretted -- a contract that his entourage had advised against, but he knew better.) . Phil Collins just licensed his whole solo discography to WBR for deluxe editions. © Bart Van Hemelen

I'm not sure... How much money do you think Prince was actually making from Spotify? A couple of thousand a month? if that? That's no real loss. He can work one night and make 10 times what he does in a month from streaming services.
Tidal has too many big names attached to Tank. Jack White, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Kanye, Madonna, Daft Punk, etc etc. These names aren't just "available" - They're co-owners of the business. In terms of content tidal has the potential to be the richest of all the streaming services.
As for WB - All the other artists on Tidal also have record companies. Tidal offering albums a couple of weeks before mass release isn't going to impact hugely on sales. If a fan is using a streaming service then they likely wouldn't buy a disc anyway.

A few weeks back they posted something on the Twitter page about Spotify being Part owned by record labels, so they were essentially being paid twice while the artist got paid the once.

I'm not sure where you got that info from? Tidal claim they pay artists 2.4 cents per stream. A statement says 1.4 cents. Spotify claim they pay artists 0.7 cents per stream. A statement 0.4 cents. http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/permalink/2015/05/04/tidal-says-theyre-paying-artists-5-times-as-much-as-spotify It doesn't sound like a lot but it soon mounts up to a vast difference. It's possible both companies pay artists on a sliding scale thus accounting for the difference in PPS.

Why would he put money into running a website when already failed? One of the laws of power is.Get others to do things for you. He must have gotten the Tidal because no one was holding a gun to his head

Sounds like he went with the better deal. I bet if he was Rolling Stones no one would have a problem because I do not see the Rolling Stones giving anything away for free !!!! At the end of the day you have a lot of cheap ass people who have some idea that music should be free. If streaming takes off Prince will have to on board if he waits to long to do so he will get next nothing better to be out in front of it.

I still don't get why I'd pay to listen to Prince's stuff on Tidal when I have it already. (And you know they're only going to play the "legal" stuff there.) We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
