IIWYG was brilliant and anyone that actually listened to the song was neither confused or mistaken by its intent guys not all fans of Prines music are fans of his obsession with androgyny You have got to know that So it's ok for Prince to write a song about how he'd like to be closer to his girlfriend by questioning if it would be different if he was a woman instead of a man but confusing and off putting to put a woman on the cover of his latest single or put on makeup and appear feminine the year after IIWYG was released. . And Prince playing with gender boundaries is more alienating than writing songs with "Pussy" in the title, penning "Jack u Off", changing his name, releasing albums in newspapers, obscuring his face on stage... . There's plenty more you could point at as reasons Prince has alienated potential fans. Sexuality is just one on the list but is very high on YOUR list. Yes, even though his U.S. sales were not as big as they should've been, world wide and over all he was still a big star...
Worldwide you have D&P selling over 6.7M to date... Purple Rain selling over 22M if not more... Parade selling over 4.5M and SOTT selling over 4M...

There are two things Prince could have done to increase his US sales.
1) Release less music and market albums for a longer period of time, a la "Thriller" which was released in 1982 and promoted throughout all of 1983 and 1984.
For comparison, Prince's biggest selling album, Purple Rain, was released in June 1984, and the final single was released in January 1985, just 7 months later. By April 1985, just 10 months afterwards, ATWIAD was out. Looking back? I'm GLAD Prince didn't do either of these things. Because in the space of 5/6 years from 84 onwards he made Purple Rain, Ice Cream Castles, The Glamorous Life, Romance 1600, Apollonia 6, ATWIAD, The Family, Parade, Dream Factory, Camille, Crystal Ball, SOTT, Lovesexy, The Black Album, Batman, Graffiti Bridge, Madhouse..... not to mention the movies!
Would you trade all that for a follow up to Purple Rain that sounded pretty similar and did another 20-25 mill? I sure as shit wouldn't.

If I was your girlfriend is a man singing to his woman about intamacy (not sex). He wants her fully. The kind of intamacy she gives to her girlfriend and doesn't share with him

. Well, we just described IIWYG the same way - I agree with your summation. I don't know where the agenda is that you're perceiving. . My point was: How is a song we all consider brilliant any less confusing to the casual listener than what you perceive as Prince trying to trick you into thinking he looks like a woman on his latest single cover? Can you see how ridiculous that sounds? You said HARDROCKLOVER needed context - the single has a WOMAN on the cover. Maybe the context you want is right in front of you but you're too wrapped up being threatened by what you thought was Prince trying to disguise himself as a woman. . In your original post, you asked "How is this guy any different than Caitlyn Jenner?" That sounds much more like "an agenda" than anything I've read in this thread. . If you can't appreciate the way Prince explores his sexuality from the start of his career to now, I don't know how you've overcome that to remain on a Prince forum. That's what he does, man. Wanting him to stop is like hoping Schwarzenegger stops making Terminator films. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. I was always more confused by the other one where you can see her face. It's more obvious here that its Cat because under her arms are clear and you can see the tissue of her boobs going up into her armpits.

It's blind. The picture would need something (like a fire hydrant) to be able to see the body size for sure. But that's not Prince's belly button. And he has a 6 pack. What?

Prince fans are extremely spoiled by the the quantity and wealth of recorded material by an artist over a 40 year career. I would argue that there is no equal in the history of popular music as it relates to his productivity. If your an MJ fan, your pretty much done with new suprises. Prince is a bottomless well.

One of the reasons I love him so much.
Think about all the stuff we've heard from him. And then remember there's still more we haven't heard. Amazing. |

I kind of see what the OP is saying. Some people are really just fans of Prince's music and can hate his over the top femininity/flamboyance and the image he portrays. It is pretty much useless to expect him to change because Prince has been girly since Day 1, when posing for For You era pictures in the '70s. He'll never change. But while I found Lovesexy sexy, I even dug the 'Gold' era, and such, I really don't get why he keeps having females dress up as him and basically 'be/act' him. That... is just kind of ughh, in my opinion. At this point, if he finally agrees to a biopic about his life, he'll probably have a woman portray him Maybe do, just not like did before

And yeah, it's no secret that his feminine appearance has both helped and hurt him. For example, what was 'in' and 'hot' in 1984 (Prince's appearance) started looking 'gay' and over-the-top by 1988. I read in one of the Prince biographies (it wasn't Per Nilsen, can't remember what it was called), that said that after the US reaction to "Lovesexy", Prince re-did his image to look a little less feminine. I think you can see that in "Batdance", simple dark outfit and long hair. He looked much more like a stereotypical rock star in that vid than I'd ever seen from him. And even the 'Partyman' disguise was more weird, less feminine Maybe do, just not like did before

You seem to be the only one that not only got my point but even made an attempt to understand. Not all Prince music fans are into the other stuff that comes along with the music The BCW video is an excellent example. Enough already lol Dance... Let me see you dance

I have tried to understand the OP's point, but one fact stands in the way: Prince's flamboyance and his musicianship are not mutually exclusive. Suppress his sexuality and you suppress the heart of much of his brilliance. Ask him to be "less weird" and what you're left with is a normal man who can play a bunch of instruments and write dribble like The Arms of Orion - sugary sweet and boring as hell. When did anyone get excited about music or musicians who had great talent but didn't challenge convention? . How does it make your appreciation for an artist any less enjoyable if part of his schtick turns others off? You can't enjoy it as much unless it's universally accepted and pushes no boundaries, treads on safe ground all the time without exception? . B O R I N G . There's plenty of good, boring music out there if that's what you're after. If you can't sometimes ask "WTF is this guy doing??" then I guess just enjoy your safe tastes and all the expected, unsurprising music in your life. Paging Doctor Freud...
Feminity is all over Prince's music and you're fans. So, at some level, you are not repulsed by that, au contraire. But it's often implicit or counterbalanced by his masculine pursuit of sex.
Then when he makes it more explicit, you're uncomfortable.
Knowing that a lot of mental activity is unconscious, perhaps you have to wonder why you get frustrated? Don't worry guys, sexuality is a continuum.

I first realized that not all fans were into his image when there was a "Is Prince Sexy" thread. It was surprising, but I realized some people like "Sign o' the Times", for example, but not the image he has to go along with it. It's understandable. Maybe do, just not like did before
