The Weird moments of purple music

One of the things that make me really loves prince's music, is that it can be really weird at times. He keeps me expecting the unexpected. Here is a list of some of my favorite weird moments in purple music. I would love for everyone to add to this list because I know you probably caught somethimg that I didn't. Or even chime in with your own opinions about these moments. This is only for moments on track. Which includes lyrics and music. Not live performances or interviews.

1. Computer blue (EXTD VERSION) - What is up with the hallway speech. Something along the lines of "stupid chauvinistic computer. About time someone programs you. Girls are computers to computer blue". I have no clue how thiscame all about. Very interesting.

2. Annie Christian - this is a weird song in itself but at the end where it fades out for the last couple of moments it sounds like a computer going haywire uncontrollably. What made prince say "hey let me throw a robot on malfunction at the end of the mix...yeah that sounds good"

3. Lust u always. - he raps " my body wreaks with lust/ I will RAPE you if I must/" . WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ABOUT! how he says it sounds super violent as well. I can see how a passion for someone can get heavy, but rape? Wow prince lol

4. Resolution- off the planet earth album. At the end of the song a synth note rings in and out for sometime. I mean the song could have ended 30sec ago.

5. Sister - we all know this is his weirdest song.

6. Pearls before the swine- the random lyric about a begal with creme cheese. Come to think about it. P has alot of lyrics about food. Weird for someone so skinny lol.

7. Lady cab driver - isn't that a toilet flushing. Yea I think it is. Strange.

I don´t think that the bagel with cream cheese lyric is random at all.

The song can be interpreted in many ways but keep in mind that this song is also about peace, about spirituality and before he mentions the bagel he sings "Can I offer you baklava? Or a bagel with cream cheese? "

While baklava is traditionally a Muslim dessert, a bagel with cream cheese is, at least in America, considered a typical Jewish breakfast item. Part of that song is about the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis and how senseless it all is when you think of the bigger picture.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Mentioning computers and robots was a big thing in the early 80s, especially in Funk and Electro songs.

Think of Computer Love by Zapp or some of the songs on Midnight Star´s Planetary Invasion album.

Kind of a futuristic gimmick.

I take the computer in Computer Blue as a metaphor for the cold, robotic, analytical way a computer processes info, in this case the attitude of women and how they treat him and why they treat him the way they do. Women are considered butterflies.....but then the girls remind him that women are not butterflies, they are computers, too. Just like you, Computer Blue. wink

Musically the song "others here with us" gives me a unsettling vibe.
but in a good way. The constant scream sample is engraved in my head
well after listening to it lol

I know prince does not promote smoking weed but listening to prince
baked is a cool experience. Everything is allways panning back and fourth.

The beat on "777-9311" apparently isn't programmed by Prince. It was a demo beat programmed into the Linn unit Prince owned.

I know. It's disappointing, right? Maybe he modified it a bit.

I claim that the weirdness is what set Prince apart from his contemporary pop artists. It is what made it last. And the genious of the 80s was his ability to combine catchy with weird. Who else would do concerts in his underwear, create a Camille and BobGeorge voice

I will go out on a limb and say that losing the weird was what made Prince disappear from the public in the 90s. Even if Emancipation was to be his greatest album, it lacked weirdness.

In my view: Diamonds and Pearls was, because of its commercial success, his "deathblow" - its success because of the lack of weird, but the same lack making people not crave to visit his music again.

Oh, there's plenty of weirdness on Emancipation! The "club scene" on "Get Yo Groove On", Azifwekare's rap on "Style", the Cap'n Crunch bit in "Joint 2 Joint", the entirety of "Courtin Time", the AOL voice on "Emale"... good times smile

D&P had "Strollin'", which was enough weird to get us through the year... and the phony phone calls on the Cream Maxi!

The "Crystal Ball" song. It's like a mini, "Wizard Of Oz" funk opera. So many twists and turns. One of my faves. The "S.O.T.T" record has those weird, "ugly-beauty" moments too.

That would be extremely disappointig if that was really true. Where did you get this piece of information?

Just Princevault. The info came from Jesse Johnson, so it's not just someone that doesn't know what he's talking about either.

Extra loveable - prince again with his rape fantasy lol. "Dont make me rape you.... or do I have to drag you." Enough said. 7. Pearls before the swine- the random lyric about a begal with creme cheese. Come to think about it. P has alot of lyrics about food. Weird for someone so skinny lol. 8. Lady cab driver - isn't that a toilet flushing. Yea I think it is. Strange.

I think the lyric in computer blue refers to his frustration that girls don't/won't do what he expects them too (be programmed)

'stupid chauvenistic computer' = prince

'about time someone programs you' == girls be like i'm not your robot

'girls are computers to computer blue' = prince will program you and you will obey

much of princes music is about his desire to find the mirror of himself in a female partner who by some miracle will put up with his shit and not say much lololol
