What was weird about Love Symbol? I thought it was some of his best work?
Who says weird isn't good? Symbol is one of my favorites, and its weirdness is a major reason why. lol

Really? Personally, I've always found the album one of his most... normal sounding lol It jumps from genre to genre and is pretty diverse, but everything from the rhythms to the vocals seem less wacky than an album like "Parade" or "Come". One of my top ten favorites, btw cool

This I have to agree with. How a weird-ass guy who makes such weird-ass music and questionable commercial decisions ended up becoming one of the biggest-selling artists of all time is pretty fascinating

Maybe its me reading too much into stuff, or maybe its just my own medical history projecting some of the sentiments, but I feel some traces of manic depression in his music. That dark haunting quality mixed with euphoria.

For example, in "Dream Factory" he goes from a very upbeat mood in "Can't Stop The Feeling I Got" and segued it right away with a very dark atmospheric "We Can Funk". And it worked as well.

That extreme mix of moods is one of the main reasons why his music grabbed my attention.

It's the story, the segues, the mystical bullshit, the album cover, the Symbol, all the mythology around that album. It's weird and its glorious!

The beat on "777-9311" apparently isn't programmed by Prince. It was a demo beat programmed into the Linn unit Prince owned.

I know. It's disappointing, right? Maybe he modified it a bit.

dammit!!!!

The engineer or installer or whatever who installed Terence Trent Darby's board set up a beat on it to demonstrate that it worked. TTD made Wishing Well with it. He gave to dude songwriting credit for his contribution.

The new language on BOYTROUBLE. I haven't really tried to translate it yet. Only "boys and girls" ("boy-le-foys and-a-fan girl-la-firls") pops out at me so far. And "curlyfryz".
What?

I think empty room is a metaphor for 'empty womb' - when I listen to it like that I cry so so hard -- its a heart breaking record.

I too think of Empty Room that way. I had a stillbirth daughter right around the time the C-Note album came out. That was the connection I made with that song. It's like therapy whenever I hear it. Love that song.

As for werid, the Cap N' Crunch bit for sure and the scream at the end of Now. I love it!!

Hmmm,,,,

Definitly a different perspective. It would be difficult for me to listen to it from that standpoint though.

One of the things that make me really loves prince's music, is that it can be really weird at times. He keeps me expecting the unexpected. Here is a list of some of my favorite weird moments in purple music. I would love for everyone to add to this list because I know you probably caught somethimg that I didn't. Or even chime in with your own opinions about these moments. This is only for moments on track. Which includes lyrics and music. Not live performances or interviews. 1. Computer blue (EXTD VERSION) - What is up with the hallway speech. Something along the lines of "stupid chauvinistic computer. About time someone programs you. Girls are computers to computer blue". I have no clue how thiscame all about. Very interesting. 2. Annie Christian - this is a weird song in itself but at the end where it fades out for the last couple of moments it sounds like a computer going haywire uncontrollably. What made prince say "hey let me throw a robot on malfunction at the end of the mix...yeah that sounds good" 3. Lust u always. - he raps " my body wreaks with lust/ I will RAPE you if I must/" . WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ABOUT! how he says it sounds super violent as well. I can see how a passion for someone can get heavy, but rape? Wow prince lol 4. Resolution- off the planet earth album. At the end of the song a synth note rings in and out for sometime. I mean the song could have ended 30sec ago. 5. Sister - we all know this is his weirdest song. 6. Pearls before the swine- the random lyric about a begal with creme cheese. Come to think about it. P has alot of lyrics about food. Weird for someone so skinny lol. 7. Lady cab driver - isn't that a toilet flushing. Yea I think it is. Strange. [Edited 7/12/15 7:57am]

He got really carried away with the sexually explicit lines around that time I guess, but that line is pretty extreme. Remember he was bonking Vanity, Jill, Susan Moonsie and a few others at the time and at 23/24 he was probably very virile. At the end of the day he was a pretty sick dude back then. Remember the lyrics of Xtralovable at the time "I'm going to have 2 Rape u now, are u going to get in the bath or am I going to have to drag u?" That to me is the darkest line about sexual violence he ever wrote. Needless to say why both songs did not make the cut for the album set.

.

Plus if you do look at all the explicit music on that album (1999) it is not unsimilar and rape consciousness was not really common until the late 80s. In the early 80s heaps of bands were getting away with degrading lyrics towards sexually avaialble young women. And a lot of shit hop and R and B still gets off with filthy songs and lyrics full of rapine thoughts and calling women names like ho and bitch.

.

Annie Christian as you know was short for Antichrist and Prince's outrage at some of the nasty shit going down at the time (1980/81) Shooting Reagan, the Pope, John Lennon, arresting of Wayne Williams the Atlanta Child Murderer and the like. I think he threw in the keyboard shoots and distortion as part of the rage he felt.

.

Computer Blue is a dig at sexism to I guess, the part about Chauvenistic computer, women are not butterlies, we are computers too, just like u computer blue. It was actaully saying women have brains and can think too and marked the shift from the degrading sexuality on 1999 and earlier love songs towards the realisation that there is love as well as sex. As you know Prince had to cut the song down to fit on the album, 15 minutes down to 4.

.

Hope this helps a bit.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
