Prince Removes All Music From Streaming Sites So another breaking news story for Prince right now is he officially has pulled his music from all streaming sites EXCEPT for Tidal, which is owned by Jay-Z...
Prince obviously has some business going on with Jay, as they were invited to the recent concert in Baltimore backstage... I wouldn't be surprised if Jay-Z and Prince struck some kind of deal based on mutual respect...
This is a very bad look for Prince it's not about what they are paying or not paying, it's about being IN with the TIMES... He's purposley secluding himself making it very hard for the new generation to even know about him when the majority of any type of prescence now a days is based on social media, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, and Twitter, which Prince is pretty much absolute in. This will hurt his career in the future, hinder more sales as well as make it harder for the next generation to "SEE" him, not just Listen 2 him. [Edited 7/1/15 18:34pm]

Not remastered or expanded of course, who'd want that? Stop the Prince Apologists ™

Agreed. If he hasn't pulled his music from Google Play Music already, I'm assuming he will soon. It would be one thing if Prince had a website that was a one stop shop of commerce for his legacy recordings and he has the means to do that and even set up Paisley Park as his own record label where he can distribute his music for fans who want physical CDs and digital versions of his songs for lossy and lossless sound quality. I do believe he will put it back up eventually because he has never created something on his own that was permanent. Just like he left social media and came back, so will the albums eventually. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

We can only hope that he removed his music because he's getting ready to release some new, fresh remasters

I would hope that's true but I don't think it is...
Why would AOA and Plectrum be removed? Planet Earth and Come too... Those need to be remastered?
He just posted an article a couple days ago on his Twitter about how streaming services puts even more money in the pocket of the labels... So I doubt it's because of the future remasters.

Dang shame that young journo chick told him about Spotify a while back. Until then, he'd apparently never heard of it and his stuff would still be on there .
Maybe he read something he didn't like in the financial smallprint when he did some research into Spotify, so he wanted his music removed.
Removing his stuff 'cos WB are doing remasters? I wish .

he does have the power to do that and just did..

I figured the originals would still be there just alongside their "Remasterd" counterparts?
Even in the case of SOTT - the #1 candidate for a remaster - I don't actually want a remaster. I just want the CD to be louder - yeh you heard me, fuck off audiophiles, I want it so loud I can feel it on a cellular level. What I don't want is touch-ups and Prince trying to sneak in songs that were re-recorded in the late 90s.
Prince IS going to change things. Nothing of what we know about Prince, his character and history, says he's going to make this easy.
With the recent buzz around Taylor Swift and Apple, this is Prince renegotiating his fee IMO. [Edited 7/1/15 12:20pm]

Removing his stuff 'cos WB are doing remasters? I wish . Ikr? After I read the article that mentioned that, I figured he would later do something. Ahhh oh well. Why does it matter? If Prince is happy with the amount his albums sell nowadays who cares. I am glad he is cranking out the music. I wish he would crank it out even faster. No matter how much promotion they put in nowadays he is not going to sell anymore. Its just the way it is. I hope he continues to flood with new music. I don't see the big deal about heavy promotion. A few TV performances would be a great treat for us collectors to have but no need to do an all out promo. That slows down future releases and causes more problems with he label as he is then expected to sell more. Minimal pressings and more releases is what I hope he is going towards in the future

His music is still on Rhapsody. In related news, yeah, I subscribe to Rhapsody. Suck my ass. I've been on Rhapsody since 2009. You kids can keep your Spotify and your tight jeans and your fancy sodas. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I think Spotify is good for Prince cuz lot's of ppl don't buy albums anymore but prefer streaming services instead, he should allow his music on youtube aswell. Everywhere where the younger audience can discover his music Welcome 2 The Dawn

They prefer streaming because it's free. Once the younger crowd discovers his music, they still aren't going to buy it. So, how does the artist get paid? [Edited 7/1/15 17:21pm]
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Spotify is estimated to pay roughly 1/2 of 1 cent to the artist for the every play. That's what this is about, and also why he's not on the new Apple Music. I think this was also a relatively new discovery for Prince.

Updated, Prince not only pulled his music from Spotify, but all other streaming sites as well except TIDAL which is owned by Jay-Z... Jay-Z and Prince most likely have an agreement in terms of being allowed to stream Prince's music.
