What if Prince had died in 89

Im sure i'll get someone cursing me for even suggesting this, but imagine a senario where Prince had died in 1989.
He would have died just after his peak, he would have done the lovesexy tour which ever says was great and he wouldnt have started the NPG.

He would be so more revered nowadays i think. Partly because that's what heppens when a great artist dies in their prime, but also because he wouldnt have had the chance to pee all over his career in the 90s.

Im not saying i want this to happen. I'm looking forward to seeing Prince play England, as i've never seen him live.

But what, musically speaking, would we really miss?

yeah there'd be no rainbow children which would be a great shame. But the best songs to be released in the 90s were from crystal ball, the good ones of which were from the 80s.

Also we'd probably have a remastered Warner backcatalog and there'd be more rare Prince songs circulating...

this isn't mean to cause offense, it's just a thought.

If Prince had died in 89, he would be known to every school child today as the Elvis of the 80ies. The God of Funk/Rock.

Sad, but true.

On a side note...
You know WB wanted to put out a 'best of' album in '89
but Prince wouldn't let 'em, cuz he reckoned 'best of's
were for dead people, and he wasn't dead yet.

Let's have a look at two examples.

On the one hand, you have Bob Marley. The guy wouldn't be half as famous if he was still alive. Hell, reggae wouldn't be half as popular.

On the other hand, you have James Brown. Now I'm sorry to say what I'm about to say, but he should have died a long time ago. He would be a true legend. But today, people see an old guy who's desperately trying to be what he once was.

And I'm afraid this is what's gonna happen to Prince in 20 years.

Sure, extremely ignorant people.

The vault would have been emptied periodically, and Prince would be more relevant in death than he is in life.

fair enough, but why must we read all this 'what if Prince had died' or 'Prince's baby' sado fan bullshit.
He's alive, making music, just finished his best tour since 88' that's alot of positives, so let's lose all the negative 'what if's'.

It's a fact: people aren't truly appreciated until they're gone. I liked how Sinbad introduced Prince on the Vibe show a few years back when he said something along the lines of "You better appreciate him now because when people like him are gone, there's never gonna be another one like him again".

I don't think it works like that. James Dean and Marilyn Monroe became legends as the public know they would have gone to greater things. But people like Jayne Mansfield and Montgomery clift don't become legends as the public instinctively know they're all washed up.
If Prince had died in '89, his career would have gone on a similar path as if he had lived. It would have stayed constant throughout the early '90s. Then around '94 there would have been a 'comeback' of sorts (and a few jokes at the same time) and then he would have gone into obscurity. Then hopefully around 2005, there will be a huge re-appraisal.

I think XtrueX said it best. Prince will still get his due, but it is a fact - people just aren't appreciated until they're gone, and Prince will be recognized as one of the greatest singer/songwriter/guitar players that ever lived...

i have one thing to say to you: get your facts right.

take 'crystal ball' for example was done prior the 1989 and thus would still be there if he died. It wouldnt have come out on the crystall ball set like it has now, but i bet that there'd be alot more unreleased Prince songs and box sets etc out now if the man had died.

Just look at jeff buckley.

And apart from the stuff on crystall ball, the rainbow children and perhaps the song 'gett off' i could do without the rest, i really could.

I bet there's more sites about Kurt Cobain now than there were in 1994.

Actually, yes he was!

Prince WAS dead, he was now prince , so it was OK to
release a 'Prince' hits album, because as far as prince
was concerned he wasn't 'Prince' anymore and wouldn't
be playing any 'Prince' songs again.
