New Power Soul

I Like Funky Music is so damn funky in its guitar riffs

The One and the rest of the album was 30 years ahead of its time

show some love if u dig New Power Soul

NPS is my guilty pleasure! I know it gets a lot of hate for the overall sound but this album has my jams on it! When you love somebody is GOOOOOD. period.

There are some good songs on it, but I think that album is probably about the first time Prince released an album where I thought the crap songs outnumbered the good ones.

'new power soul' is one of the albums that i enjoy start to finish. it flows really good as mid-background music...not something you have to actively listen to and nothing that is entirely abrasive. overall, a decent album in my opinion (which, like most prince albums, contains a coupla gems).

New Power Soul and MPLSound always get unwarranted and unnecessary ridicule...im not mad at either of those LPs...Chaos & Disorder and Rave would b more worthy targets for criticism

It could have been produced beter in (a lot of) parts, but there are definately some jams on this album. Mad Sex, Come On and Wasted Kisses are top notch in my opinion and I ejoy listening to Push It Up!, Freaks On This Side and (I Like) Funky Music every once in a while, even thoug they are kinda throwaway party tracks. I ve come to like it better over the years, at least it wasn't a boring as some of the later albums.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

It has a few songs I really enjoy, but very few moments that are truly Princey. I like Mad Sex (the song and mad sex in general), When U Love Somebody, Come On, and Wasted Kisses. But I wouldn't rank any of those near the top echelon of Prince's work (I guess they're not upper echelon grooves).

The artwork is his absolute worst.

The general sound/tone of the album is way too similar. Not much dynamics. It's sort of like eating a way too large sandwich at Arby's. Not terrible but Jesus is this shit done yet? You know?

Rave is SO MUCH BETTER than NPS. No comparison.

  1. "Newpower Soul"
  2. "Mad Sex"
  3. "Until U're in My Arms Again"
  4. "When U Love Somebody"
  5. "Shoo-Bed-Ooh"
  6. "Push It Up"
  7. "Freaks on This Side"
  8. "Come On"
  9. "The One"
  10. "(I Like) Funky Music"
  11. "Wasted Kisses"

I dig most of this album. smile ..it fits between Emancipation and Rave Un2 and feels tighter than both of those..

.

I like that the album was released by The NPG (a band in which Prince was of course the most important member) .. wildsign ..I like it more than Goldnigga or Exodus (probs because P on lead vox..)

.

I would give it a solid 7/10..maybe bias because I love Prince..although friends have loved "Come On" when I have played it to them...which reminds me, the 12" promo I have of this track is credited to " prince and The New Power Generation" ..

  1. "Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic"
  2. "Undisputed" with Chuck D
  3. "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold"
  4. "Segue"
  5. "Hot Wit' U" with Eve
  6. "Tangerine"
  7. "So Far, So Pleased" with Gwen Stefani
  8. "The Sun, the Moon and Stars"
  9. "Everyday Is a Winding Road"
  10. "Segue"
  11. "Man'O'War"
  12. "Baby Knows" with Sheryl Crow
  13. "I Love U, but I Don't Trust U Anymore" with Ani Difranco
  14. "Silly Game"
  15. "Strange But True"
  16. "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do"
  17. "Segue"
  18. "Prettyman"

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - for me this album is just dull after the first few tunes..

"Tangerine" is awesome, one of those bizarre gems we occasionally get from Prince.. wildsign

the extended version on "Rave In2" is great, and leads into "So Far, So Pleased" really nicely smile

.

Could probably make a great album if I chopped these two albums together, but I always leave Prince albums as they are! yes

For me NPS has 3 great songs: Come On, The One and Wasted Kisses.
2 decent songs: Mad Sex and Until Ur In My Arms Again. The rest are poor.
.
Rave has maybe 2 great songs: I Love U But Don't Trust U Anymore and Pretty Man.
A few decent songs: Man O War, Greatest Romance, Strange But True, So Far So Pleased.
.
The only thing that separates NPS and Rave for me is the bad tracks on NPS are really bad.

The tone of New Power Soul may not be dynamic through the album, but the lbum as a whole has a different sound than Emancipation and Rave. To me I liked Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic the first listen but it doesn't hold up, there's no horns in Rave... New power Soul has the FUNK... Rave to me is Prince at his least confident moment in his career, all of the collaboration with other artists, the cover of a Sheryl Crow song, his own call back of the album by releasing Rave in2the Joy Fantastic, even his version of Beautiful Strange is boring--live, it's unbelievable. I don't know, I can't believe no one digs the funky guitars throught Funky Music on NPS.

I think it's great, but kind of throwaway, good for an occasional listen, good party album

Mad Sex is the only killer track on it. Come On and Wasted Kisses are good. Nothing else does it for me really. I cant stand The One. I just dont get why it gets so much love around here. His live versions of the song are awsome, but the album version is shit on a stick.

the only saving grace for this album is that, although unbeknown at the time, there was worse to come that would actually make NPS seem quite good in comparison such as MPLSound, Planet Earth and 20Ten.

Funny, those three are the only ones that I like on the album. I wouldn't say The One is shit on a stick, but it hasn't fully grabbed me (yet). Wasted Kisses is probably the best on the album behind Come On, let alone one of his best from the 90's altogether.

Showing LOVE!! I do love this album...I wish I had it on vinyl. Funny that this is the only Prince album that all of my 90's raver buddies loved too.

I have always thought this album was unjustly slammed. For me it peaks with tracks 6-9, with Come and The One being as strong as anything he let loose in the 1990s. I definitely prefer this set to Rave and in some ways prefer it to Emancipation.

If you've got funk, you've got style.

30 years ahead of its time...? Pretty amazing for an album 17 years old.

Anyway, this was the beginning of the end.

Does that mean that people will be listening to music that sounds like NPS in 13 years? Jesus. I hope an asteroid slams into the earth before then.

I didn't like this when it came out...but it definitely grew on me. Totally underrated. It's not a masterpiece by any means but it's enjoyable. I like it way better than Rave.
