DJ Quik and Prince: This Is A Collaboration That Needs To Happen I was just watching the Unsung episode about DJ Quik and as big of a Quik fan as I am as a rapper, his prowess as a producer, musician and engineer went up tenfold watching him talk about his equipment, techniques he uses when mixing his music and the music of artists he produces to generate the clean and pristine sonic quality of his production. And I chuckled at Quik's assistant engineer sharing an anecdote about Quik buying a remastered Prince album, playing it in the car on the way to a concert Quik was performing, drove back to the house and entered his home studio to properly remaster the CD to bring to equalize the compression to frequency range of the entire CD before going to his gig. Quik to me is a better producer than Dr. Dre (to a certain degree Daz Dilenger, Battlecat, and Fredwreck have been overshadowed by Dre's shadow), makes better use of live instruments, uses Roger Troutman's template for making funk music without being derivative and his instrumentals are great amalgams of r&b, jazz and funk. So many people sweat Questlove as a producer and have raised the notion of Questlove producing Prince, but Quik working with Prince in the capacity that Joshua Welton work with Prince now, Prince would come out it with a product than most of his releases lately. I dig Quik's work with El Dedarge but Quik more than Pharrell, Questlove or any other producer in contemporary Black music would be a match made in heaven for Prince.

I always hoped one day Prince would release some great song and then release an 12" Maxi with a DJ Quik Remix, a NIN remix and an Aphex Twin remix...

Im a huge quik fan. I have all his work from quik is the name to safe and skud. To this new one. Quik has always metioned prince in his music. He compares himself to prince. quik is pretty much obsessed with prince. and a collab would not work. They are both ego maniacs. Probably caus they bot are in tuned with the funk

If they did collaborate, maybe working at a neutral recording studio would offset some of the ego. Both Quik and Prince have world class recording studios and by taking the "home field advantage" from both, they would concentrate on doing the song justice rather than their respective egos. I think Quik could make it work, especially when he has worked with artists from Tupac Shakur to El Debarge. Part of being a producer is separating good ideas from great ideas and tapping into a well of creativity that just needs to be unearthed. Not saying Quik could produce a classic out of Prince but records like 20TEN and Art Official Age would have better results with Quik. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Would be interesting hear this collaboration. I've always enjoyed Quik's song El's Interlude.

Judging from some footage of Quik's recording sessions with El, Quik has a healthy respect and adminiration for artist's with natural musicality. Quik's Visualism DVD goes into greater depth about his musical talents as a producer and engineer. Quik would certainly offer a perspective closer to the hip hop generation and Prince's generation more than Questlove could ever do. His production style in terms of brightness and sonic clarity is what is missing in some of P's recent records. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR
