They're interchangeable without any disruption to the albums whatsoever?

Usually a slowed down ballad after 2 pop rock or faster dance numbers. But some of his best songs on recent albums have been track 3.

.

Ainturninground - Maybenot but PLE sucks in general

The Breakdown - Totally great song

Futuresoulsong - One of his best songs since the 80s

Crimson and Clover - A great ballad cover

Dance4Me - Its pretty good

Somewhere here on earth - Slightly overwrought and produced, but okay

Te Amo Corazon - a good love song

.

Nothing really holy about any of those songs though.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Ever since Batman he has been building up his albums the same way: they all start with two rock/funk/party songs and the third song is -always a slow song. Arms of Orion, Diamonds and Pearls, Million Days... It's gotten very predictable.

This is how all hair metal albums were, too. This is a very common way to pace an album. It isn't unique to Prince. It's very common.

THIS. Album sequencing is so generic. It's like action movies. Same shit again and again and again.

It just so happens having a ballad in slot 3 is almost perfect musical neuroscience.

First you get the rousing intro to get you excited about the album.

Then comes either the ideal pop song, more or less mid-tempo, or something more conceptual that defines the tone of the album.

Then the ballad -- because after two songs calling you to attention, you want something more introspective and slower.

Beautiful Ones was a 3rd track slow classic. So was Condition of the Heart. Does I Wonder U count as a slow classic. Housequake, off Sign, broke that trend; so did Glam Slam from Lovesexy and When 2 R In Love off the Black Album.

There's a joke about a vuy named Artie, whom for whatever reason, killed a woman and her 2 kids in front of a grocery store...all for the price of one dollar. He went thru the effort of choking all three to death.

Now...every Wednesday, the store puts a tribute up...

Artie chokes 3 for a dollar.

So if it's only the handful of random albums listed (which you chose) how could they have possibly been sequenced for THAT reason?

You can't randomly choose things, ignore other things and then state that theres a deliberate pattern! We're not talking about a religion, here!
