It would be very interesting to have a "dual-artwork" treatment for a future remaster. Have the mountains/water/ladder be the background, and have all of the characters be on a separate "cell" layer (similar to how they do traditional cartoon animation).

.

One thing I just noticed: the initial concept - with no people - has 3 of the 4 basic elements of life. Earth, Water, Air. The only thing missing is Fire.

The fire is in her loins. There is a sunrise or sunset there.

the lady holding the apple looks like a 1920 /1940s starlett

and I've seen that clown or one like him from a 1940s images

the guy in Black I always get the impression it is Charlie Chaplin without the moustache

was The Kid (1921), followed by A Woman of Paris (1923),

Reading about the Life of Charlie there is so much parallel to Prince's life

no wonder he was an inspiration and the Prince channelled him during so

many periods of his career.

From Wendy&Lisa.com

Uptown #37 Spring 1999

David J. Magdzairz

"Doug Henders was asked to create the cover art for around the world in a day shortly before Christmas 1984. He was given a brief 15-point outline from Prince with some ideas of what he wanted graphically. "The process of creating the coverwork and the rock trip (Purple Rain tour) itself were very gruelling." says Henders. "I think that's reflected in the melancholic rendering of the painting."

.

For some of the images, Henders snapped polaroids of the Revolution band members and people close to the band. Then he slightly altered the faces or real life features for the painting. "Most of the figures of on the cover are characters in the songs, but I think some of the people Prince wanted are parts of himself, so they are all of a piece and someone autobiographical." Henders explains. "The litte puppy in the picture was added simply because Prince got himself a dog while on the road."

Hours?? I am not well-versed on all the circulating shows, but are there ones where the encores run for more than 2 hours?

I forgot to give credit and a source to that alternate album cover. It´s by Jim Warren, and from what I recall it was planned to be the album cover at first, but Prince decided against it and used the Doug Henders version. But I think he also like Jim Warren´s version a lot and bought it.

This is a pretty cool thread. I remember listening to this record with headphones on, smoking a bowl and perusing the art. I always loved that sticker that came with the album. Put it on my first car.

This one:

I still like that alternate cover a lot better though. Anyone ever notice the mountians are a naked woman and the nipple is a hat?

Such an awesome read. Though, the lyrics for Paisley Park? "A mission is easy," the article reads. It's "Admission is easy," is it not?

Always interesting reading different peoples take on the songs
I love that they feel Condition of the Heart is the *Masterpiece* of this album

I agree lol next to the title cut

I'm listening 2 the First Avenue Parade open rehearsal's version of Paisley Park and it causes me to look at that song differently. I've always loved it but I have a different respect for it now.

The artwork was really something special. I thought so then, and think so even more now.

.

Artwork spanning 2 covers was nothing new, but correct me if I'm wrong but I'd never seen album cover elements divided up for use on singles before ATWIAD.

.

Does anyone have a high-res image of the "balloon boy"? I would love to incorporate that into my digital album cover.

Around the World in a Day 4.22.1985 © 1985 Paisley Park

chapter 6 Hangover p74 Possessed

...he now opened himself more to genuine exchange of ideas.

Prince previewed the album for Warner bros.
during a ceremonious listening party
for about 20 company officials
in early February 1985 in Los Angeles.
Joni Mitchell and Prince's father John L. Nelson
were among the special guests present.
Attendees were seated on the floor of a large conference room,
and as the high pitched flute that begins "Around the World in A Day"
lilted from the speakers,
Prince & Lisa walked in holding flowers;
the whole scene was according to one attendee very Haight Ashbury

-Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince p 77

Overall, the album was not as radio-friendly as 1999 or Purple Rain,
but it still had two U.S. top 10 hits,
went double platinum and was an important step in Prince's musical evolution, incorporating new instruments and musical styles.
