Also, I agree with the people saying Sign o'the Times sounds a bit flat. It's the songwriting that makes it a great album, not the instrumental parts. Today it's the other way around: I hear great musicianship, but boring songs.

Whoah whoah, hold up! No one is saying Sign o' the Times the album sounds flat... it's the compact disc itself that sounds flat - it's in dire need of a remaster, and won't impress anyone in its current state.

The album on vinyl sounds great. cool

I know exactly what i'm talking about...so dont call me a fool, all right..good.

And i tell u something else...as great as when When doves cry still for us all is, musically speaking its boring as hell...5 minutes just drums (parts of it replace a bass-line, and some syth touches...that all) face it, boy/girl...

...Yes i love sott too. For me a great record. But i also think that a live band would take it to another level ( for example sott movie...or the rehearsals..).... The strange thing about prince is....he is preaching since 10 years " real music by real musicians" and uses on most of his records drum machines/pre tools and and ...ironic...

you don't have any idea what the fuck you are talking about. stop talking.

leave the music to the musicians and stop talking garbage nonsense.

this is so insanely insulting to anyone who appreciates music. if you think you can't be a real musician and use drum machines, you are a fool. and you aren't a real prince fan.

the reason when doves cry is one of the most innovative songs and the biggest song of that year is simple-- sonic minimalism. the song is nothing more than a synth, a drum machine, and a voice. if you think you can't use synths, pro tools, and drum machines and still be making real music, leave this site and never call yourself a prince fan ever again.

Honestly..............I don't waste my time with folks who don't like Prince.

I have a friend who hates Prince.........but loves Milli Vanilli. This simply doesn't make any sense.

good/great musician by the masses?

He is. Even people that don't care for him respect his talent.

.

A lot of the problem is he buries a lot of really good stuff way down deep and makes it hard to find, saves a lot of his best stuff for aftershows and also picks weird things to release to the masses. Videos with silly storylines, live concerts that are shot poorly, etc. Dumb movies. Having "Graffiti Bridge" and "Under the Cherry Moon" running on VH1 doesn't help him and makes him look goofy. But how many of those people have seen "The Undertaker"?

.

The Musicology tour and TV specials he did at that time are good examples of him doing it the opposite way. Same with the Super Bowl halftime show. Several people I knew were floored by the acoustic set he did on Musicology and didn't know he could play like that. SAme with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" that same year. My firends started telling me they NOW wanted to go see him live.

.

We all saw the result. Prince's tour was selling out everywhere and was one of the highest grossing acts that year. Then he follows it with the "Te Amo Corazon" video and everyone goes back to yawning and forgetting about him and his cheesiness.

.

His oddball personality, reclusive nature and curious relationship with the modern internet don't help matters either. Most people simply don't have time to deal with his bullshit.

.

He's respected as a musician by hs peers and most of the masses but a lot of the masses have only ever heard the hits and seen the over-sexualized videos and the cheesy movies. A lot of people who are non fans are stunned by things like NEWS, The Undertaker, Exodus and several bootlegs I play for them.

.

Short version: Prince makes it too hard for the masses to relate to him and have only heard the slick studio numbers and seen the cheesy videos and movies.

I heard a critic descibe Prince as the first "underground/cult pop artist" or something like that. It rings true.

.

He reminds me of Todd Rundgren in several ways. Everyone knows who Todd Rundgren is but no one really appreciates the depth of his talent and the things he's accomplished beyond real music fans.

I agree but i also realise that-

some people may find Prince's 'classics' to be a bit 'dated' sounding in 2015.

some people hear 80s production.. Big Gated Snare Drums ect... and tune out.

Honestly,

Ive heard many professional musician friends say-

Prince's music doesnt 'touch them' in the way

Marvins does..

Or STEVIE's or MJ's Quincy Jones produced late 70's material..

Or Roxy Music.. or Fela or Joni's or ?...

Why?

Maybe its (1) downside of Prince craving 'Stardom & to get noticed' 1978-1981 ?

This is lost on me. I think Prince is one of the most brilliant musicians of all time, and a song like The Beautiful Ones has the same effect on me as something like I Can't Help It, Will You Be There, or Living for the City.
