Cybersingle -- Why the hell do I like this song?

I've always loved the song Cybersingle. I can't begin to explain why. Lit just sounds more energetic than the other material from that time. P's vocals are passionate. The song is kind of awesome for a Dark Ages Prince song.

Are there any good quality versions of it?

hahaha. Yeah, when you type the lyrics out things don't look so pretty.

But I still like it. No idea why. It might be that line about Superman.

All I've ever had is a 128 kbps mp3 of this track. I know it was offered as a download on Real.com for a while in 2000 but I don't know if a better quality version exists than what was offered through npgonlineltd.com, which is where mine came from.

It's not unlistenable but suffers from the obvious effects of downsampling. Is that what you mean by "is there a better quality version"?

The song is OK, but I kinda agree with paisleypark4 though - I was glad when TRC was released and the sound was much more organic and full-band sounding.

Pretty amazing how some of Prince's most brilliant moments are as a one-man band, and some of his worst moments come that way, too, moreso later in his career IMO.

Yeah, I have that Real.com download. I was just curious whether a higher bitrate version ever leaked.

I'll take TRC over Cybersingle any day. But I'll take Cybersingle over worse shit like Y Can Eye Do Whatever and that abomination Props & Pounds.

It's actually not that bad. The chorus makes me very angry though. I hate it more than Prince hates playing Tic Tac Toe with blind people.

I really do INTEND and WANT to like all of Prince's songs. This Cybersingle just makes me cringe and hope no one that knows I like Prince ever hears this song.

One of only a few that I really dislike.

I don't think my ears are discerning enough to differentiate between Cybersingle and Y Should I Do That Londell and Nothing Goes In My Woman 'Cept My Props and Pounds. All part of a mediocre at the very best period to me.

Cybersingle has one advantage over Props & Pounds: it lacks a Kurt Loder voiceover!

You know what my problem is with Cybersingle? I think it's like the movie The Net. Like you saw it when it was new and thought "Man that's pretty cool," then came back years later to watch again on some shitty cable channel and it seems like it doesn't even know what the hell it's doing. In The Net, Sandra Bullock is being chased for a floppy disk in her purse. In THE NET. And now I listen to Cybersingle and hear a song released online...about a song released online? It's like the relevance that was there before kinda vanished.

Off topic but related: my wife was on jury duty a few years ago. The TV in the juror waiting lounge was playing The Net. The movie kept starting over every time
it was interrupted by announcements, so she was forced to see the beginning of The Net countless times.

It's like she experienced my encounter with Cybersingle in a very condensed period of time.

I'll take the bait. I'm going to have to agree with you KS, I have always liked Cybersingle.

It is totally one of those Prince songs though that you know is not really a good song , but you still like it. Not that i would really expect anyone else to.

I would never use it to anyone as an example of any kind of great Prince song, but yet when it comes on, there i am rocking with it. shrug

I think it's got something to do with it being short and to the point. It bursts on to the scene, does it's thing for a couple of minutes, and then it's out. Not without a rocking guitar part to boot.

Cause And Effect is kind of like a more fleshed out Cybersingle, but doesn't work as well.

Another similar one for me would be when Horny Pony came out. I thought it was such a dumb song and the lyrics just awful, yet

when my auto-reverse deck in the car flipped over that Gett Off single, there i was rocking that dumb Horny Pony down the highway at top volume lol lol

It's all good except for the lyrics... there's a ton of Prince songs that are cool outside of the lyrics.

I like Cybersingle, too-- it's pretty catchy, and quick, and I always thought the lyrics were meant to be funny, mostly, and so they never bothered me.

Can't see any mention of this, but wasn't it an old track re-worded? It sounds like what it is, a 90's New Power Trio track with shoddy lyrics added later.

If you switch off from what's being said & focus on the music, it's not too bad. There again, that's been my Prince mantra for a while.

There's a good song underneath the really bad lyrics. It's not just that the lyrics are overly silly, but they don't really even fit the melody they're sung over. They sound clumsy and ruin the flow.

As a piece of music, I think it's pretty close to "Extraloveable". It has the same type of a drive underneath.
