Content and acting aside, shooting it all on soundstages really did contribute to the "cheap" and "claustrophic" feel. Purple Rain, by start contrast, had a large amount of outdoor shots and real-world sets (First Avenue, warehouse and home interiors). If any of the sets were artificial in the movie, you couldn't tell.

This film was conceived as a musical in the style of "Singing in the Rain", as the out takes prove. At some point they chickened out and tried to reshape it into a more Purple Rain type film. But with the fantasy sets and storyline, that was a doomed-for-failure change. They should have kept it as a fantasy musical. [Edited 5/19/15 8:36am]

I'm in the minority that actually likes the fake looking sets. I wish they'd kept in some of the deleted scenes. Like the Can't stop this feeling I got deleted scene is great if not a lil cheesy.

best moment in the film: the "Elephants and Flowers" performance.

This performance was exciting and interesting.I'm guessing that this was supposed to be an example of the "spiritual noise" that Morris was complaining about? Near the end of the song,we see customers walking out,apparently confused/angry about the lyrics? The scene works really well.If only the other performance scenes were this good.

I don't know, man. That scene has always been awkward to me because there are so few people in the club...even before the crowd starts leaving. It just seems embarrassing. And the few idiots sticking around prance like a bunch of silly assholes. It's so awkward.

I think it's tympani. I paused it on the sheet music a few times to look at the info, and one of them called for tympani.

On a semi-related note, I tried to watch UTCM again for the first time in at least a decade, and I couldn't get through it. Twice! Soooo boring. The only moment that gave me any kind of life at all was the Girls And Boys scene, as it was the only moment in the film where Prince was called to do something he's actually good at.

His "acting" was so self aware (Jerome's as well, to a slightly lesser extent), that it was hard to sit through. Control freaks CANNOT be good actors. Everyone around them was great, though, considering the weak ass script.

It's pretty to look at, I guess. Could've been more so in color.

People miss what it is - as you said: a long form music video shot on a sound stage with a fantasy concept. It was more of a musicla stage play than a full feature film with real world story with a muscial backdrop like Purple Rain. The problem is that people came in with the expectation of a Purple Rain sequel in the same style. The weal continuationof the story line with the same characters (what happened to Apollonia and Billy?) didnt help this problem.

I LOVE UTCM. Then again, I love terrible Chinese food that makes me shit like a banshee, so...

I love that more than ANY Prince movie, that's for sure.

UTCM would have worked so much better if it had been in color.

Yes, the studio set bound feel of the film is probably quite destracting to modern audiences. It's one of the few plus points with me though as that, along with the surprisenly nice cinematography/look of the film, are the only real plus points. That and Morris.

UTCM reminds me abit of those silly European "comedies" Paramount use to do in the 1930's.

Maybe Prince knew this too and put it in black and white because of this? I think it helps the film personally, but again, like the set thing in GB, some modern audiences must of been abit perplexed by the decision Prince made.

"UTCM" is so ludicrous and it's meant to be LOL (well i hope it was). Having said that, the film's bottom completely falls out once Prince and Kristen Scott Thomas hook up. Otherwise, it's a fun ride.

At least it doesn't scream mid 80's like alot of films from around that time. "Purple Rain" is such a time capsule LOL. But "UTCM" doesn't "suffer" from that half as much.

"UTCM" was an interesting failure, whilst "GB" seemed doomed from the start. The fact WB agreed to the script and him directing must make them the best/stupidest music label in the world back then. Not even Michael Jackson could get CBS to pony up for "Moonwalker".

At least Jackson got a director! I mean seriously, Prince just one day thought he could write and direct a whole movie? Did he think he was Spike Lee or something LOL?

Albert Magnoli was supposed to direct Graffiti Bridge,but he and Prince couldn't see eye-to-eye so he left the project.I remember he said something like "I envisioned a Purple Rain sequel that was bigger...taking things to another level" (or something to that effect).I think he wanted the movie to show Prince and The Time being superstars,as opposed to being stuck back in that old Minneapolis neighborhood,still playing nightclubs.I agree with that.
